A quick tutorial for changing oil in a 2009 Mazda5 with a fairly basic tool set. Should also apply to 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 Mazda5 with the 2.3L engine. When I changed the oil, I found that it requires a canister filter.
I ended up changing the oil in a parking lot near an auto parts store to make sure I had all the supplies I needed. The process took me less than an hour, and only took that long because I kept going in and buying tools I didn't have.
The access to the oil filter cover is fantastic, but it can definitely get messy if the filter cover tips in the wrong direction.
The instruction manual calls for 4.3 quarts of 5W-20 oil. I prefer using synthetic high mileage oil on my vehicles so I can be relaxed about the timing and run up to 15,000 miles or 1 year per oil change.

For no particular reason aside from the fact it's high mileage synthetic and fairly affordable, I always use Mobil 1 Extended Performance High Mileage Synthetic Oil. I find it either at Walmart or Amazon for $27.47. Here's the link for Amazon: amzn.to/3jqQunY
For this particular oil change, I used whatever filter I could get my hands on at the autoparts store. The next oil change, I'll go with this high-mileage filter. I'm going to go with this 20,000 mile filter since it's all of $.20 more than the 15,000 mile filter. amzn.to/2Lx969q.
Even though it doesn't fit perfectly, I would recommend an oil filter wrench since it did end up making the job easier for me. amzn.to/36SJsmLa
I'm including a link for a 17mm socket on Amazon, but mostly because I used the picture for it and want to give credit where credit is due. amzn.to/3rAD4bF
