I dunno. Sounds like, were I subject to medieval execution, that this might be my preferred method. Being knocked unconscious before they do anything else to me sounds a lot better than having all my long bones broken and then being hoisted up and left for the crows to pick at or being emasculated and eviscerated while still alive and awake.

Much better than using that mallet to break person's limbs -BTW , a good deal of your images depict that particular method , which we usually call "breaking on the wheel" , even though the wheel was optional, and could have been replaced with blocks of wood or St. Andrew's cross. That is waaay different from mazzatello, and much, much more painful!

Alexander Dumas describes this "mazzolato" execution in The Count of Monte Cristo as follows: the victim is tied, hooded, and blungeoned in the head with a maze or war hammer, smashing the skull, leaving the victim mortally injured but alive; at this point, the victim's throat is cut, and pumping his abdomen with a foot until most or all of the victim's blood is drained from his body. Barbaric.

Actually sounds like a pretty quick and clean death to me, maybe not for spectators. I just saw it occur in the movie “Midsommar”. I think “the boats” would be a far worse way to die, or the wheel.

The 'maces and clubs' shown look like they may actually be the brutal improvised weapons fashioned for trench combat in the First World War, when it was realised that the rifle and bayonet were unwieldy in such confined spaces.

Crucifixion in my opinion is the worst form of execution. Being scourged almost to the point of death, then, while your whole body is in shreds and tatters, you are paraded through city to the execution site in whatever manner they chose for you i.e. already nailed to the cross beam or tied to the cross beam or even forced to carry the whole cross. Then, if that wasn't painful enough, the nails went through your wrist bones so you wouldn't bleed out but the nail will touch or tear your nerve running along your arm thus making you feel like your arm is on fire and then your feet are nailed to the post beam. They position you in such a way where you are forced to push up against the nail(s) in your feet for every breath, also scraping your shredded and tattered back against the rough wood. Then, they leave you there in your agony until you die from one of many different ways; asphixiation, cardiac arrest, pulmonary bruising, exposure to the elements, hepatitis, blood loss.

Yeh..that's what I'm talkin' about...let's bring back crucifixion...I'm convinced that the reason why ancient Rome fell was because they got rid of crucifixions...Cicero made the point that this form of punishment/execution was inhumane...wrong! This is the preferred method to keep people in line.

If you wonder as to the cruelty of medieval times, it makes much more “sense” if one presumes the following: 1) all failure is *MORAL* failure; 2) all crime is (knowing, willful and malicious) rebellion against the state and (far more importantly) its Ruler. These are the cornerstones of judgement of Authoritarian Regimes as well.

I saw this in an abattoir where they were slaughtering pigs. They hung the pig up by its feet then took a mallet and struck it at the base of the skull. a large volume of blood immediately drains out of the skull and onto the ground. I was at the abattoir to collect a vial of blood so I could look at it under the microscope. Needless to say, I ended up needing a bottle to carry the blood home in. I brought a friend with me. I don't think she was ever the same about eating meat after that. This was in the early to mid 70's before practices were modernized and animal welfare and cruelty were taken into consideration. Still, it was impressive that the farmer was accurate and was able to get a clean strike on the first hit every time. I watched four pigs slaughtered this way.

Yes, I agree. In both cases, some victims lasted days in absolute agony. Even with Breaking on the Wheel, the condemned could pay for the “Coup de Grace” (knockout blow on the head) to be delivered first.

It appears that the Ruzzian PMC Wagner still uses this method. Recently a Wagnerite spoke badly of Ruzzia while a captive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Said Wagnerite was part of a prisoner exchange so was returned to the Wagner forces. Since he had committed treasonous actions he was murdered by the Wagnerites with a mallet or sledgehammer to the head. Supposedly Wagner owner Preghozian was witness to the murder and attempted to send sledgehammers to France. This is easily verified if anyone doubts it. There is even an uncensored video of the murder on the internet. The prisoner appears to be drugged in my opinion.
