Hi Mazzy, your Dylan and Rolling Stones Videos moved me to check my CDs again. That's not so easy as I have stored all ca. 3,300 pieces away, after ripping them on NAS. But I was curious if I could find my few SACDs and other special formats. While crawling through the CDs I thought I could file them on Discogs (so far I did only the 12" vinyls). At half time I found only one SACD of Big Star, three DVD-Audio (and Video) by King Crimson, an SBM Gold Disc by the Indigo Girls, and one by Pink Floyd (Dark Side). Furthermore I found a few 3" CD-Singles by Billy Joel and Eric Clapton. I still hope to find the other SACDs (Beck, Björk, Cash, Costello, Drake, Gabriel, Kinks, Stones, Roxy Music, Dylan). So thanks a lot for keeping me from boredom. Have a good time!

Mazzy, I too have one of the very last manufactured OPPO's (UDP-205, 2018), an Arcam AVR31 and the new B&W 805 signatures so we have a fairly similar digital setup and playback system. SACD does indeed sound better than CD to my ears and I do NOT experience listening fatigue that I tend to do listening to Redbook CD's. The Dylan and Stones SACD'S that came out in the early 2000's are indeed fantastic! The SACD's, again IMO, tend to be much more aligned to vinyls' analogue aural signature. The new Atlantic 75/Analog Productions SACD'S have all been fantastic as well have many of the newer MOFI SACD's. Our OPPO's also play Blu-ray's so I would also encourage you to pick up Rhino's QUADIO series as even their stereo hi-rez layers are fantastic (I personally LUV the quad mixes but I am a hi-rez, immersive/surround fan!). Happy listening my friend...cheers!

I have a Yamaha CDS 1000 which plays SACDs and regular CDs in both of my home audio systems and I can listen to CDs all day without getting listening fatigue. I think the CD player makes a huge difference in the sound of CDs. I had mid range players by Cambridge Audio and Marantz previously and the Yamaha player blows them away - of course, it's considerably more expensive.
@MichaelRMarshall19 күн бұрын
@Don-md6wn My OPPO is bearable on the Redbook CD's but I have experienced "listening fatigue" ever since my first CD player and I have had everything from a Yamaha to a Nakamichi to a Marantz. I don't have my analog front end anymore (Linn LP-12) but I have been able to enjoy my digital spinning discs via my OPPO UDP-205 immensely.

@@MichaelRMarshall1 When I decided to upgrade my CD player in 2020 during Covid, I was going to consider Oppo but they had stopped making new players and I ended up with the Yamaha. I liked it so much after an initial burn in period that when I saw one on an open box deal at about a 40% discount I grabbed it and put it in my second system. I was afraid that Yamaha and everybody else was going to stop making CD players, but it appears that CDs are having a bit of a resurgence.

I actually have that Mobile Fidelity release of The Basement Tapes. I bought it at least partially for the irony; the album that pretty much invented the concept of “Low-Fi”, infamously recorded with a single microphone on a basic non-professional reel-to-reel tape recorder on the cheap, substandard tape they sold at the nearby gas station, given the mobile fidelity “audiophile” treatment. And yeah, I’ll admit, it does sound really good, …for what it is.

Thanks for that. A really nice overview. And you are quite right, there is no-one that can compete as a singer/songwriter/performer. A true genius. Cutting Edge. What a revelation that was. Yes, maybe not for everyone, but I devoured that with so much respect for a man totally in control of his destiny. The only other set that involved me to such a degree was the big Woodstock set. Street Legal: this was probably the first album that I had of his contemporary with its release. It was a fine set for me, although I can understand long-standing fans maybe not warming to it immediately. I saw him at the huge Blackbushe Aerodrome event in 1978 with Eric Clapton, Joan Armatrading and others and that remains the greatest concert I have ever attended. You have encouraged me to revisit his catalogue. I have it all, of course, but it is a daunting task to go through it all. But, you know, it will be an enormous pleasure. So a big thank you for the video. Have a great Christmas. Keep up the good work. Your bulletins are essential viewing.

Dylan was never interested in "audiophile" recording standards. When he made his masterpiece "Blonde on Blonde" he said he was after "that thin, wild mercury sound." He wasn't chasing perfect fidelity. He wanted to create a stylized, atmospheric (often crude or at least rudimentary) sound that was his own. The muffled "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" might sound like it was recorded underwater (or under a thick wool blanket). That was the intention. But you're right about that SACD set, which I also picked up before it went out of print. That's as good as these records were meant to sound -- and, if I recall, Dylan approved the recordings back in 2003. I have players that can handle multi-channel SACDs via RCA cables or HDMI -- an Oppo, a Sony and a Yamaha -- and sitting in the middle of those records is an experience every Dylan fan should have at some point.

I am late to Bob Dylan introduced to me by my former boss who had the Biograph box set. I wanted to get that box set but it was out of print (on vinyl). Then I started with the Bootleg Series. I have six of those CBS/Sony Legacy SACD's and enjoyed them. I always wondered how the CBS SACD's sound in comparison with the MFSL Bob Dylan SACDs. I'm fine with the CBS SACDs though I missed out on the Dylan mono versions later.

Your “who the f is Bob Dylan” story at the beginning triggered a memory of something that I’ve never realized all my life. I do remember digging “Like a Rolling Stone” from 1965, when I was nine years old, but I’ve just realized that I did not know, and probably did not care about, the name of the singer. I recall later seeing the name Bob Dylan, and I didn’t know who he was. I don’t know when I made the connection.

Whatever the format, I have never met a Dylan album I didn’t like. There’s always something good on each. See the movie! It’s not a biopic! It’s the story about how an artist must follow one’s own vision, move when and where the spirit directs, defy expectations of those with different agendas, not make the popular choice, and risk being perceived as a jerk (which may be others’ perceptions and/or the actual case). Go see the movie! I experienced unexpected chills at certain moments.
