Wow came back to this video a year later. My engine has developed a tick in the same area. I need to pull the valve cover back off and inspect. But I wanted to say thank you for sharing such valuable information. If you have a PayPal address I’d love to buy you a beer or a coffee if that coffee place next to your shop is still going. This kind of information is priceless for the weekend mechanic.

I just want to again warn anybody who r/r's one of these assemblies to be extremely careful separating the rods from the bridge. Be very gentle getting it out as it's easy to mushroom the end or warp the bridge. Also it's extremely important to follow his advice and sandpaper/smooth the end of the rod before you put it back in. It's very easy for it to catch a bit going in and ruin your bridge. Also it's possible your bridge to be warped over the years and I would recommend only removing one bar at a time. If when you're trying to remove the bar and it seems excessively difficult, I would maybe just cancel the removal and push it back all the way if you want to keep your bridge and head and maybe try and bolt it down or something before removing it, I dunno, like I said I think it may be possible they warp. Having said all that, there really is no reason to remove the bar as you can check the condition of the rockers by moving them like he demonstrates. You can also remove and replace the hydraulic lifters with them still in the bearing bridge. The only other reason for removal is perhaps because you want to clean the inside of the bar...well, this is anecdotal but in all the ones I've removed, even in 360k milage vehicle and there was no sludge or dirt inside. Also if you do damage your bearing bridge, and you're in a bind, it is possible to just swap one from a different head. I know because I tried it and it worked. However if it's true like he says that each bridge is milled to fit perfectly with it's head then of course it's not a good idea, lol! I would check clearances plastigauge etc. Also be careful getting the hydraulic lifters back in to the rockers as they tend to want to go in sideways sometimes. Also some other tips I noticed about this engine: - a vacuum hose under EGR valve tends to wear out and leak. This vac house is hard to see at first glance. -its possible to develop a coolant leak into the oil pan from the timing cover seal. I did this from over heating I believe or pressure washing the coolant passage ways with the water pump off. (Its also possible from headgasket, oil cooler, etc). I've had long term success of fixing the leak with "stop leak" or "coolant system seal". You will need to flush your oil system a couple of times (I used my old oil as a flush). -a $20 plastic valve above the oil pump can fail and cause loss of residual oil in the oil galleys when parked. A symptom will be loud valve noise on start up. -when the ignition coils get old and the plastic seal on the outside cracks they can get wrecked if you get them too wet. Especially if the water has enough time to rust or freeze in there. - to fix leaking valve cover breather covers, you have to clean the grooves and get all the black and oxidation out. Only then will the sealant seal perfectly and last a long time. I believe there is even a video about it on this channel. - dont forget the O ring on oil pump pick up. It can fail and ruin the motor. The fella with the E55 track car / race car had this problem on two engines.

The rocker / bearing bridges are not interchangeable. It says in the manual they are milled together.

@@amglady yeah well I interchanged one as I had no choice and it worked for 60k miles till I got rid of that engine. 😅

These are about the best engine Mercedes has ever produced. I own a 15 Euro only shop in NY and my daily driver is an 05 E55/550whp. Partially because of its engine. You can buy an NA 112/113 engine from junk yards here for $250 with a 6mo because they do not fail enough to have any more value. I keep a few dozzen engines on my shelves and always have one of each of the 112/113s in stock. Very few people go this deep on one because of there reliability. Yards usually just scrap them. One day they will be gold

Only from simplicity and low cost of ownership aspects. They are reliable and definitely “good enough,” but aren’t superior to either their predecessor or successor engines. Both made more power with less displacement, while still maintaining efficiency, robustness and the same reliability. The trade off is a higher ownership cost over time, but most enthusiasts would consider it worth it.

Tasos I was doing the valve cover gasket and while I had it off I noticed one of the roller tips had a small ring of wear the whole circumference of the roller tip. Not really wide maybe .2mm you ever see that? Oiling/failing cam lobe issue possibly?

Awesome Thanks for the video! My clk430 was has a knocking sound. I took off the bridge and removed the hydraulic lifters. The lifters all look normal to me, even after I disassembled them like the way you did. My question is: How can I tell which lifters are bad?

Thank you Tasos, I watched the entire video very informative. My lifters starting clicking after 900miles I bought the car a month ago now with 99k miles and took it to a mechanic and is quoting me 4800dollars to fix the lifters, I have the courage to do it myself but could you give me a reccomendation should I buy new lifters or repair the existing ones? Also how common is it for the rocker arms to fail and start to have play? Thank you so much my friend! -Nick

Hey Tasos...did you reuse the Bearing Bridge Bolts or did you order new ones? Reason I ask is because the bolts have to be tightened 8nm and then at 120 degree angle....wondering if reusing may break them and so better to buy new Bolts??
@amglady2 жыл бұрын
Those bolts are one time use
