For people that haven't seen the previous videos, keep in mind this is a time attack car. I've been using it on the track for the past two years so its been through a lot more stress than most other E55's My point is that if it happened on this car it might happen on other E55's later down the road, and without an oil pressure sensor or switch there's no way to tell when something like this happens. Its something that could have been easily prevented had I known in time, so Its worth pointing out to others so they don't fall for the same thing.

Interesting. My guess is that the o ring was cut during installation. It's also my guess the redundancy of the Benz design allowed the engine to survive during normal use even though the pump was cavitating. It's probably the competition use that pushed the conditions (high rpm / hp demand, hot / thin oil, g-forces further compromising oil pickup, and so on) beyond the rod bearing's ability to cope. #5 rod is the furthest rod from the pump supply, so this kind of goes along with the cut seal line of thought. Sorry for your troubles, btw.

Absolutely a great video! Here is my solution! When your MB engine gets older, use a seal conditioner in the oil along with a quart of Motorkote to stop the heat of friction. Of course your application is racing, and most racing engines are torn down after so mile hrs and cycles. So, I would think the average MB owner would see a good o-ring for many more miles.

A Few points your very good video brings back from memory. 1)For many years race car mechanics have installed a big red warning light to warn the driver of oil pressure failure. A gauge is a good idea,but belt and suspenders here. When driving,keep it simple,you will not be concentrating on gauges. 2)Various race car parts houses sell different designs of oil accumulator,some with the idea of a driver actuated ball valve for a last ditch way to supply oil for a few moments anyway. A good idea here. Try Summit Racing for a start. 3) I would be pissed. At the very least,contact Mercedes-Benz with a polite but very firm letter,paper not electronic. How dare they allow a point source of failure like this. Since it is not backed up with an appropriate idiot light,they are the idiots here. Any American lawyer worth his salt would rub his hands at a potential class action lawsuit here. You will not be the only individual affected here. I would be enraged,not philosophical. Racing does indeed improve the breed. 4) Fix this so that there is a better pipe seal than just one O ring. That is just plain stupid. Is there any way you can install an A/N fitting instead of the O ring ? Even if it means modifying the end of the pipe as well. Good luck with your next engine,and for God's sake,go through it with a fine tooth comb. Happy track time in future.

paul manson mb would cite the EXTENSIVE modding he did to the vehicle as a reason for added stress and it would be good enough for almost every judge, if not every one.
@paulmanson2536 жыл бұрын
Larry Wilmore Hmm. Perhaps you are right. I suppose the real issue here is to put pressure on the engineering team supervisors not to be stupid with point source failure without warning light backup. Particularly that there is an on board computer capable of decision making in so many hundreds of microseconds. When 1981 model year rolled around and the on board became a reality,there was much talk of 'limp home mode ' . A solenoid could be empowered to trigger the emptying of an accumulator of oil.big warning light,timer,voice,limited power,and things I cannot think of that brighter boys with training can. If I can think of this,the fact that MB has not done some or all is more than bean counting. They should be ashamed of themselves. Look at the complexity of that disassembled engine compared to the 1955 revolutionary Chevy small block. The process engineering required to create the production line much less the engine is something they should be proud of. Not that many decades ago,an F1 engine was less complex. Point source failure is an embarrassment the militaries of the world have been tinkering for many decades. How dare MB allow that here. The more pressure on them the better.

@NotSoCrazyNinja6 жыл бұрын
The way you pronounce "cylinder" is really distracting me for some reason. Never heard anyone pronounce it like that, but I kind of like it. It makes me a bit angry that an o-ring, something that probably costs pennies, is the reason for an entire being utterly destroyed. It's like a house being burned down because of a single loose wire in one electrical outlet that was caused because of vibration from people walking over time. This is one reason I hate modern engines. There is so many parts, so much complexity, little things could be overlooked and those little things could destroy the engine.

That's astounding that the engineers did not design an oil pressure sensor into the system. Especially on a high-performance engine like this. My W116 has an oil line that runs to the pressure gauge in the dash - super simple, easy to read. It seems that Mercedes vehicles would be invincible without their rubber components - O-Rings, Harmonic Balancer, Engine Mounts, Suspension Bushings, Air Springs - all common problems and all due to the degradation of the rubber compound. And, apparently, the oil system :( Great video but sorry this happened to you. Keep up the excellent work!

Sounds like if you do the proper maintenance on these engines they’ll never quit! Drop oil change intervals to 6000kms with synthetic if your above 180,000kms to save you in the long run! I like to drive mine kinda hard so good preventative maintenance

Gods of speed demand sacrifices from here to there! Great vid, even though it sucks that your engine was lost in the process.

Very interesting video, and quite a spectacular engine fail! Incredible to learn that it doesn't have an oil pressure sensor, the last thing I would have expected from such an expensive car.

Very good and thorough analysis of the nonconformities that led to the engine failure. I think that Kevlar reinforcing for their O-rings would help to prevent them from coming apart and becoming a FOD issue, and would be a good engineering improvement for Mercedes in this case. Thanks for the heads up!

Was this sucked hole and o-ring's location of the oil pump dipped below the oil level surface when oil was enough?

Great video! So it's a must to change those oil pump O rings when the external oil level sensor starts to lick. I have a 2002 Saab 9-3 with 120k miles, and recently changed all the gaskets, O Rings, etc and I conclude it's the time, the old of the car who plastifies the rubber O rings on the engines and-, of course-, the heat and cold cycles. Also it's a good idea before stops a turbo or intercooled engine to let it COOL down, this way we allow the oil to cool and help those O rings to keep in good shape, but time has no mercy on the rubber, that's why tires manufacturers reccomend to change them, cause they are "old", even if they looks good..

Im curious what is the Dealer book rate for parts and labor if someone wanted to replace this O-ring every 100k miles??

Oil pressure check light is a must! Gauge is not, but helps you understand whats going on, helps you judge engine and oil state and if you arent pushing the engine too hard...

I have ever dealt with a problem with the m112 engine, the balancing shaft for the camshaft had sprockets which wore off quite rapidly. I noticed that problem during an oil change.

Could you weld the oil tube in so it wouldn't need a rubber seal????🤔

Good video, why would the engineers not include a oil pressure sensor? That seems pretty important

Can't believe there is no oil pressure sensor of any type. MB should be held liable for damages. Was there a required replacement in the maintenance?
@syntaxerorr6 жыл бұрын
That oil pump is so damaged. Something Slammed into that pump, that probably pulled the line out and broke the o-ring. How can you not even acknowledge the massive damage to the oil pump?

This is a very good video. I have also watched the follow up videos of the replacement engine and also installing the pressure gauge (odd why they stopped installing those from factory). The engines I play with also get damaged due to oil issues but it's more so due to some of them being oil burners and people neglecting to check their oil levels. I think an oil level sensor would be a good idea at least for those engines.*Nissan VK45DE* I have looked on Merc forums and I see that the sensor will give a warning in the car -*Engine level. Stop, engine off*. I like the simplicity of that. Not everyone who gets in a car knows that the red light that looks like an genie lamp is a Nissan oil pressure indicator and what to do with it.

Oh, also their oil pump inlets/outlets are 2 flat mating surfaces, not a tube-in design. They do use O-rings as well but they are used like washers, so the inlet is always sealed . 200,000 miles and the O-rings were still rubbery. Nissan did something right.
@xfmotorsports6 жыл бұрын
Yeh the oil level sensor was definitely a good addition in these engines but should have still kept an oil pressure imo. The new o-rings they supply now are a different material so I hope they last longer

my uncle was a mercedes mechanic before he passed away. said theres an issue with the low oil sensors in the older mercs. especially if the oil pressure sensor orfice is blocked with carbon from old oil (think extended oil change intervals)...

i haven't watched your other videos but if its a track car didn't you have an oil pressure gauge? The first thing i installed in my track car was oil temp and pressure gauges.

Very interesting. I have a 2003 SL55 with a M113 engine. I'm not sure if it is a 113k as you referred to yours. How can I tell? I have 81000 miles on it, and it is not a track car. Mostly riding around town use. Do I have to worry? Not so many miles as yours, but it is 16 years and one month from date of delivery. Any comments would be appreciated. RR
