I’m not good in maths n economics and I have a bachelor background in psychology, sociology and another bachelors degree in education from India. Thanks Sameer for creating this video. I am wondering If I can get your thoughts on this: - I have been working for over 10 years and have been feeling stuck in my career. - During coffee chats, I was suggested to consider MBA or MS Computer Science (I don't have an undergrad in CS but saw there are some bridging programs out there for those who don't). Wondering what do you think about MBA vs MS Computer Science? - I think MS if usually for those who usually have around 2 years of work experience but may not be appropriate for those with more work experience. - I think with MS CS one tends to become a software developer writing code. Pays well but just writing code. - With MBA people usually tend to go into 3 buckets (consulting, IB/financial services & tech). My perception is that the work life balance of consulting/financial services isn't great and also getting there in mid 30s is tough but tech (product management seems to be the most popular role in tech post MBA, though the current tech economy isn't great with layoffs) seems more open with better work life balance.
@MBACrystalBall2 жыл бұрын
Your thinking is in the right direction on all 3 points. There are other areas that MBA grads get into, apart from the 3 that you've listed. And it can also become riskier to go into an MBA after 30.

There's no 'best' in terms of specialisation. You'll have to pick one based on your career interests and goals. It doesn't have to be related to your bachelor's degree. We're not aware of any top ranked MBA program that differentiates on those aspects i.e. federal vs provincial.

Hi Sammer. I am following your articles and videos. They are really awesome and informative. I am 28 now and I have done my masters in engineering from India and have one-year work experience in MNC India. I am currently working in the Fortune 500 company in Japan for 4 years. So, I have overall 5 years of work experience. I can also speak Japanese fluently(did a diploma in Japanese). I have published my research paper in IEEE during my post-graduation. I have also participated in technical overseas conferences in Australia, Canada, the USA as a Speaker. If I combine all these into one, how strong would be my application compared from others? And, What are the chances to get into top MBA schools? Now, I am preparing for GMAT. What score do you think would be enough for me to get into elite MBA schools?
@MBACrystalBall5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ankit, thanks for the kind words. With your permission, I'll be a little more blunt in answering your query. What you've done here in sharing your profile details, is to put some (not all) the jigsaw pieces on the table and expect the reviewer to build a picture of it. Maybe some of those pieces aren't even relevant for the picture you may be trying to build. This is a common issue we see many applicants doing when they first approach us. The biggest tip I have for you would be to make it easy for the admission officer to see where you're coming from and where you're going. The latter part is completely missing in what you've shared. That makes it difficult to know if any of the accomplishments you've shared would really be relevant, forget impressive. Start with the bigger picture in mind and then give me the individual pieces, hopefully already connected. Would you agree?

A high quality general management MBA works well for most consulting aspirants. Since you already know about the technical aspects of manufacturing, an MBA would add a management layer on top of it. Part-time programs generally don't have the same market value.

We have to admit we haven't heard of this program. Be cautious about programs that seem cheap (in terms of tuition), as you may end up paying a higher price for the decision in the future. Ensure you talk to current students to understand the ground realities before you take a decision.

Sir sameer can you relate MBA with accountant experience

Sure, you can. But for that, you'll first have to think about where you are in your career, where you want to take it, and how an MBA can help you in that journey. Have you already thought about those?

Hi Sameer, I am a naval architect, struggling to find a decent job due to the lack of opportunities in my field in India. I would like to do MBA from an Ivy League B-school but do you, as an expert, think I stand a chance to get into an ivy league b-school even with a great GMAT score, since my work experience of 2 years is pretty dull and uneventful?
@MBACrystalBall5 жыл бұрын
Hi Aravind, don't be so hard on yourself. It's tough for anyone to have a brilliant profile within the first 1-2 years of their career. It takes time and patience. Which is why you'll find students in the top bschools having around 5 years of experience by the time they start the program. Give yourself time and try to find the right job so you can build your profile.

I am torn between doing MBA in India now and building a profile so that I can get into an Ivy league school. Since my main motive is not to be stuck for years at a low-paying, make-no-impact job, would you suggest that I appear for CAT? Thank you Sameer.

Hi sir, This is Kishore and I am a software engineer(Systems Engineer) with work experience of 3.6 years. I feel stagnated as I've understood that I would be growing specific to the company, not have a broader exposure and 5 years down the line I cannot see myself progressing in IT industry with my current position. I feel pursuing an MBA would add great set of skills to understand the business world and give me great exposure to the corporate world providing me wide range of opportunities to look. I've given CAT exam last year but couldn't score much(82 percentile). Through some online research, I found that after 4 YEARS of work experience CAT isn't a viable option. So I'm thinking of taking GMAT exam but I think profile plays a very crucial role in getting admissions into International Business Schools. I would like to build my profile but I don't know where to start. My two concerns: 1.How to build a good profile right now at this age. 2.Is pursuing an MBA after more than 5 years of work experience a good option for career growth?Supposedly if I want to pursue MBA from USA or Canada or Germany!! Thank you. Please let me know your views.

Hi Kishore, you're right that CAT isn't the best option at this stage. Coming to your queries: 1. We've shared some tips here on improving the profile: www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2012/11/07/how-to-make-your-profile-irresistible-to-the-top-schools/ 2. You could choose any of those geographies, however also first do some research on the challenges that you'll have to face in each - specially when it comes to jobs and work permits. Work experience should not be a big hurdle as you're still closer to the average age in those countries.

Hi Rashid, looking at an MBA as an escape route will not help. Here's a video we've created on other reasons when an MBA will not be worthwhile. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKCVdZyEgbGnbtU Since you don't have much work experience at this stage, an international MBA will not be helpful. You could consider the traditional 2-year MBA in India if you're sure that an MBA is what you need at this stage. Having a Bsc degree is not the problem, it's the lack of a strong post MBA career goal. Once you nail that you'll be able to convince adcoms on why they should accept you over other strong applicants.

Hello sir/mam, my name is Anuj and I am an engineering undergrad currently in 4th year of my B.Tech. I always had a dream of joining GSB but my current engineering college is a tier-3 college. My full story goes like this, I want to pursue M.Tech from a tier-1 college in India. So, right now I have an admission offer from NIT Tiruchirappalli (NIT-T). I am choosing M.Tech. first because I wanted to get an exposure for my MBA admission and also because I wanted to have an Masters degree in my technical field so that I can use that in my future ventures. So my question is that should I prepare again to get into IIT's or should I go to NIT-T. The plans after M.Tech is that I would work for 2-3 years and parallelly give GMAT and then approach the B-Schools. However, my main focus is GSB. I have been following MBAcrystallball for some time but I didn't find any cases similar to mine. So the question is whether M.Tech from IIT will give a better chance of admission than NIT-T.( By IIT I mean the top 4 like IITB, IITM, IITD, IITK).
@MBACrystalBall5 жыл бұрын
Hi Anuj, as a general rule work experience matters more than academics when Adcoms evaluate profiles. If you'd like to pursue an MTech, do it without worrying about how it'll impact your MBA admissions. Also, since you accept that the undergrad degree isn't top-notch, it would be a good idea to spread the net wider than just one highly selective bschool such as GSB.
@anujjha6255 жыл бұрын
@@MBACrystalBall Since, my undergrad isn't top notch so that is also one of the reasons why I wanted to pursue M.Tech. from top-notch colleges in India. That's why I had the doubt about NIT's or IIT's. Is there any added benefits of being from IIT's than from NIT's in India.
@MBACrystalBall5 жыл бұрын
Adcoms are aware of the fact that getting an Mtech from a top institute such as IIT isn't the same as getting a BTech from the same, since the competition and selectivity aren't the same. Which is why we suggested going for it only if you see real value in it for your career, and not as a means to impress bschools.
@anujjha6255 жыл бұрын
@@MBACrystalBall Then what should I do in this case ? Because even after doing M.Tech from any college I will get a job in Software companies and not any consulting or IB. And how will I be able to reflect my leadership qualities through an engineering position/perspective. I am willing to do anything in order to make things right now. I mean this shouldn't be the case that undergrad matters so much that it won't let anyone admit into GSB or other top B-schools, right ?

If you see the success stories on our website, you'll find many candidates who had tech/software experience who went on to attend good programs.
