For sure. There was a moment when part of the back line's marching was off and 95% of them adjusted to being off beat to create uniformity before fixing it. That takes serious skill. In marching band, uniformity always trumps being "correct". All throughout high school marching band, that was something I struggled with but they do it effortlessly.

That drum major is amazing! How in the hell does he run like that without falling on his face?! Damn! This is incredible!
@jimodonnell32535 жыл бұрын
Well, to start with, he does it via intense practice in dance and twirling, with some acrobatics thrown in. None of which, mind you, has anything to do with actually conducting music, which is the first and primary purpose of a drum major.

So as of this date 4/23 I am 78, lived a few blocks from the WOSU tower, and growing up delivered the newspaper along Star. I could look and see the stadium everyday. I graduated from OSU 1967 went tnto the Air Force and ended up in CA got out remained in CA had a career and now am in rural OR. I love to look at this and other videos of the OSU Marching Band my emotions are joy and pride in being there growing up 22 yrs - I just smile through out these videos. It is so long ago now but I have always been a Buckeye though I have not lived in Ohio for 56 yres - I am always a Buckeye. Thanks Central Ohio for such a great place to grow up and to be so proud of you all! What a privilege it was to be born there and raised there thanks mom! I am just smiling now as the Band begins the Script Ohio! Okay so the script Ohio is complete and I am weeping for the nostalgia of it all, What a marvelous heritage it is for me!

Script Ohio never, ever gets old! Amazing watching the little elements of showmanship from each member, and how they march through each other’s lines without missing a beat. And the timing has to be impeccable! How do they stay together? They’re marching in different directions, not hearing the sound as they would if they were inside, and they’re sometimes marching with their backs to the three directors on the sidelines. Yet, they still sound like a cohesive unit. Simply amazing.

@@helenvanvoorhis2678 You are welcome. No, I did not have that honor; however, I was a bandsmen who started in 4th grade, was fortunate enough to go to an outstanding middle school (where the director was a former U.S. Army band director...discipline!) and a likewise highly touted public high school known for is very strict corp style marching band. This eventually lead to a partial music scholarship to college (Southeastern Louisiana University) for marching band and wind symphony (both by audition). While SLU had a very good marching band back then, it was not at a level comparable to OSU; however, I know and appreciate what it takes (physically, emotionally, intellectually) to be in such an outstanding group of young women and men while having to "make grades". I am very proud to say that I had 2 nephews in the LSU "Tiger" band (also a highly touted, outstanding group) as well as another nephew in the ULL (University Louisiana Lafayette) "Raging Cajun" marching band. Good Music is good food for the mind and the soul. May God bless all our fine Universities.

It's too bad we didn't get to see IU's marching band in this video. Our football team might have gotten their asses kicked (I'm assuming. Don't remember 2011 but I assume OSU handed it to us with little effort) but it would be a different story if it was a battle of the bands. The Marching Hundred is freaking amazing. I don't want to say OSU's band sucks or anything like that, because they're obviously really good, but the Hundred is on another level. Yes, I may be a little bias, but I'm also right.

I remember in my youth [1950's] The Salvation Army bands playing on the street corner or if you lived in a coal mining district,then the brass and silver bands [membership was usually coal miners] Google 'Durham Miner's Gala' Nice warm sunny afternoon, a stroll in the park and a band playing on the bandstand. Happy days.

You really should. I live walking distance from Ohio stadium and have seen this many times - goosebumps every time. NO other college football fans in the US love and respect their band the way Ohio State fans do - many fans at other schools head for the concessions stand at halftime and mostly ignore the band before the game. This is really nice footage. The tradeoff is, when you're higher up, you get the full effect of seeing Ohio written out in script by the band, but the music isn't as loud.

BBrigg64 I seriously enjoy the band as much as going to the game. Just going to Ohio Stadium is an experience. My parents and brother graduated from there ( I went to Ohio U). My dad actually lived in a dorm in the stadium in the late 50s.

These guys must be so fit. Seriously, you try marching at that pace for that length of time in that uniform in that heat. Then carry a heavy musical instrument and play it proficiently and in perfect time at the same time. Then also sing. And remember that insanely complex routine. And not stand on anyone's toes. And also not collapse. This might look a bit dorky at first glance but this is seriously impressive stuff.
@blakepartain88645 жыл бұрын
CailínRua In all honest, you’re right. My band uniforms are polyester and it gets hot but their traditional uniforms are actually wool, which is insane.

It doesn't come close to 30 Conn J-22 symphonic tubas, 53 pounds apiece, strapped across the chest of the players, in what is arguably the truly best college marching band in the world, the Jacksonville State University Marching Southerners. Their tubas play more difficult charts than OSU or most other college bands are willing to attempt with their trumpets, and JSU's other horns simply outstrip all comers in musical challenge and sound. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fn3SmqB-mcaIn8U

From someone who's always put hbcu bands above all, i.e, famu, Bethune, Jackson state, etc....this band by far holds its own, just with formations and uniformity alone. Outstanding.
@OHCelt4 жыл бұрын
HBCU bands are great, and I love their style and energy. However, people who try to compare them to TBDBITL do both a disservice - they each define excellence in their own genre, and that is how it should be. It is apples and oranges to rate one against the other.

It's incredible that they chose a famous french military march... a bit accelerated even. Sambre et Meuse. I never thought I could have seen and heard that french patriotic song played by an American band... Especially for a typical american sport game ! But bravo, the rendition was good.

The music for the SCRIPT is the magnificent French military march "Sambre et Meuse." A brilliant choice! (Full name: "Le Régiment de Sambre et Meuse" typically known as "Sambre et Meuse" for short but, it seems at Ohio State Univ. its typically called "Le Regiment.")

David J Gill the high school I go to does something similar, Script Kent, we play this at the last home game of the season, the stadium lights get shut off, we have glowsticks on our feet, and march to spell Kent in cursive, inspired by The Best Damn Band In The Land ofc!! :)
@jpc71185 жыл бұрын
Yes David... Sambre et Meuse is a french patriotic and military song, written during the terrific defeat of 1870, this song was to prepare the revenge (which happened in 1914-1918). I have served now for more than 25 years in french army (land army then gendarmerie), this song is often used to march at a "défilé" ... but here, they use it at a great speed, so fast... so impressive and great :)
@DavidJGillCA5 жыл бұрын
@@jpc7118 Interesting stuff. Sambre et Meuse seems to me to be one of the very best marches in the repertoire for military band. At The Ohio State University they refer to it, oddly, as "Le Régiment."
