Amazing feat...using razor knife I was able to "pop out" HP compatible chip and replace it within a Non HP ink cartridge! Problem solved.

In my case, the M280_Series_FW_Update-20211221.exe firmware listed WORKS. Now my HP LJ Pro MFP M281fdw honors the 2 toggle switches mentioned near the end of this video, which I have set to OFF. For me, after flashing the downgraded firmware, the "cartridges blocked" message did not go away and the printer did not self reboot. THANK YOU brother. Don't forget to turn auto updates OFF on the printer.

Worked! I tried it both times on a computer attached to the printer via usb, that did not work. Tried it from a computer on the same network and it worked but, only on the older firmware. 20200612. Keep trying if it doesn't initially work. Be patient!

I have a HP MFP M283fdw and installed non-HP toner cartridges. I get the cartridge "Blocked" error. I can't downgrade the firmware through the HP Smart App or through the printer setup. I can't find the 2020612.exe file you are using on my computer or online. I have set the HP cartridge protection to "off" in the printer setup and the cartridge policy to "off". I turned the update "off" and set the downgrade to "yes". My firmware date code is 20231206. Any suggestions?

This worked for me eventually, but I also had to change a setting on the printer to allow a downgrade of the firmware. On the printer, go into the printer's Setup | Service | LaserJet Update | Manage Updates, and set Allow Downgrade = yes, Allow Updates = yes

will this work with the HP model M283fdw? i purchased this printer profesionally refurbished. it came with no toner so i purchased a full set of compatible toners from amazon but the amazon toner does not contain a chip. i don't mind if my printer does not show accurate toner readings. i would just like the printer to print with non HP ink

Hi, We used refill cartridge on black. did a few prints and stopped printing because black cartridge was showing empty. we bought a new set of non-HP and the black is still not showing and printing. When i change the color to blue font it prints. when i do test page the black font of the test page is blank. Should i clean the laser unit or these is something i can do before i resort to opening the printer?

If its not printing at all then dont open laser unit, laser unit need to be cleaned only when printer print faded or light print. In your case something else can be an issue. Try another toner first

@@BilalKhalid Thank you for your advise. You will not believe what i found. After inspecting the toner tray without even opening the printer, there was a piece of plastic from one of the old toners that serves as a hook to open the toner. It was seated on the right where the black toner sits and probably was preventing the toner from engaging or spinning. After removal it is printing black. Many thanks and my your income increase tenfold (M281fdw Non-HP Chip).

This did not work for me... Once I sent the firmware, the printer never rebooted and I can only assume it never actually downgrade the firmware... The second fix did not work either. I'm still getting the error message.

Hello! I downloaded the firmware but nothing happened.. I decided just to replace chips and that route worked. Later on the printer reset, said update failed, and gave me error 65. Have I damaged my printer in any way, should I update it to the newest firmware just to be sure? I looked at the firmware and it is the most recent firmware available on the HP website but I just want to make sure everything is OK as I'm quite paranoid of damaging things.

As others have said... this no longer works... more recent firmware wont let you go back. But as one or two people have said...swop the small chip on the right hand side of the toner cartridge. Swop the one from a used genuine HP into your replacement. I made sure they were the same color but dont know if this is a deal breaker. It is a fiddly job but with patience and care its possible.

Yes you can downgrade this model m281fdw, i just tried it again yesterday

@@BilalKhalid I think you can do it with a firmware installed at any point up to somewhere around the end of 2022, provided you set that do not automatically upgrade setting. But if you let the printer update in 2023 I think it gets a firmware that locks itself in and wont let an older version over right it. I tried about 10 times over about 3 hours, before swopping chips - The first chip swop took me 20 mins and after that I could do the second one in 5 mins.

@@BilalKhalid the way I understand it from online research, HP has added Firmware? To my printer and yesterday when I attempted to install the new authentic HP ink cartridge the printer blocked the new cartridge saying it had a nonHP chip. I spent a couple of hours trying to find an answer. Desperately needing to use the printer, I bought another new cartridge at Office Depot and the same thing happened. Then I went to KZbin and followed instructions to remove cartridge, shut down printer, unplug cord, wait ten minutes and start over. I did this several times up into the night. No success. The one video told about downgrading to remove firmware, ( I think it was your video) but I couldn’t follow it. I’ve put it on hold until Monday when I get back home.

If you are using HP genuine toners then this message should not appear. Any how if you having this error non hp chip, I will recommend to upgrade the latest firmware from hp official website. Hopeful it will solve the issue. And also make sure that did you get the same number of toner that was came with the printer?
