The nice things about listening to some of their old goofs is that you can quickly tell that it's from an older episode. Not in a bad way, but like you can see how much they've grown, because you know they'd be commenting a lot more about that weird and creepy age difference if they did that question today. Also, I'm looking through the related vids and one of them is To Catch a Predator, if that says anything...

I'm glad somebody else has noticed this! I listen to a lot of these videos and sometimes I'll hear something a little off and scroll down and it's almost always before about ep150. I just think it's so interesting to hear the progression.

Okay though, real talk for the younger people out there, just for a moment: If you are under 18, and you are dating someone significantly older than you or more mature than you, understand that they also realise that you are the less mature or experienced one, and the older person may be taking advantage of that fact. The reason why it's creepy (well, one of the reasons, anyway) is because the older person IS more experienced, and is much more capable of manipulation and coercion, among other things. Question why an older person would want to date someone significantly younger than them: The problem is not with you, young people, it's with the older people who may be preying on you, or may be incapable of forming mature or serious relationships, or any number of things. Generally though, it's not a good sign when someone significantly older than you takes interest, if only because psychologically or on the intellectual level, there may be something very dark going on. I just wanted to say this in case any younger fans may be listening and wondering why exactly this dude seems so creepy and why it's so weird-feeling to most people. I would personally suggest (based on my own experiences) to leave significant age gap relationships until you are over 18 and at least slightly experienced, if purely for your own safety and well-being. My own parents are a great example of this type of relationship ending poorly: My father was my mother's assistant professor in college. She was a student. They started dating then. (Back in the 70s, this wasn't as taboo as it is today, and nobody saw a need to intervene.) Fast forward 30 or so years, and it ended in a vicious divorce with domestic violence court involved. This is because of multiple factors, and I am not victim blaming my mother or my father, as both mistreated each other in various ways, and neither were suitable for a relationship at that time at all, let alone with each other. (That's a classic toxic relationship, folks.) The lesson is that no matter how bad you want a person to be The One, no matter how much you love them and want it to work, sometimes you just have to step back rationally and realise it's a potentially very, very bad idea. Thinking rationally as a teenager is literally impossible. I know this because I was in fact a teenager at one time, and even thinking back upon those dark days in the vaguest of manners instills a deep fear in me... A disturbance of dark energy that pierces to my very soul. So believe me, I know that teenagers feel things deeper. I mean, I think so, at least. Based on my own life, I'd say teenagers and younger people just feel emotions deeper, it's part of being young. It's why everything is so huge to us during that age range, or entire stage of life, really. So adults who have passed that stage of life and are aware of what it's like and what the "natural blind spots" of sorts are for a young mind-- Just be aware that people older than you have more experience than you, and even if they aren't necessarily smarter than you, and they still have more overall awareness and potential to manipulate you. Not to say every relationship with a large age gap doesn't work out, but if you are under 18, don't engage in a large age-gap relationship until you have at least passed 18 years old and you get a little more experience with the bullshit people pull on each other while dating. I'm saying this because I want everyone to be safe, and I feel like our good boys here maybe missed the mark a little on the angled approach and descent for landing at Joke Town Airport this time, in that yes this bit is funny, but also: It's a serious question, and potentially a serious situation for that person/that couple. For anyone in a similar position, I wanted to offer some real advice. I'm not a therapist or super smart person or anything, but I have a lot of experience personally with this kind of thing, and I hope this helps someone if you're ever in this situation. If you read this far, I appreciate it very much.

Brilliantly said, thank you so much. I'm just about to turn 25, and knowing how much growth I've gone through even since I left college, I couldn't fathom dating a 20-year-old, much less someone still in high school and young enough to be my sister's classmate. Like... there's no way somebody who's 23 doesn't know exactly what they're doing and how vulnerable that teenager is. I think since this is an older episode, we can have some faith that they've since changed their perspective on the humorous value of the question, but yeah, this missed the mark for me too. A relationship between a 17-year-old and a 23-year-old is inherently imbalanced, and that fact is too uncomfortable for me to find jokes about it funny.

Also, unless you're like a year or two younger than them and you've been dating since you were both in high school, there is basically zero chance in hell that they're not taking advantage of you if you're dating someone in college or older. There's like zero good reason for a college student to want to date someone in high school, seriously. There's a huge maturity gap, even for a college freshman. It's just weird.

When I went to school one of my friends dated an older guy. Guy said he was 19 and my friend was younger than me so I think he was 16-15. At the time we were really naive and didn’t think it was creepy then. We realised how bad it was when the guy turned out to be actually 24. I'm 24 and the thought of dating anyone like. . . Younger than MAYBE 22 skeeves me the FUCK out. When you're younger it often doesn't seem like a big deal to date someone 5+ years older than you because hey, it's a sign of how mature you are, right? NO. It's a sign of how fuckin' gross the older person is. They know that there's a power imbalance, and that's probably what drew them to the younger person in the first place!! If you're under 18 I'd HIGHLY suggest you stick with the 1 year age difference when it comes to dating people. After you're 18 I'd say 4 year age difference max until you're 25. Then skies the limit, go fuckin' hog wild. But until then let your mind and body adjust to being an adult. Don't force yourself to mature or date someone who is in a different stage of their life, because I can guarantee it will NOT end well. Be kind to yourself. Don't let some creep take advantage of you just because they say they're in love.

I just wanna point out that, even if the boyfriend was only 20, that's still too old to be dating a 17 year old. I couldn't imagine at 20 wanting to date someone who was 17. At that point, you've been an adult for three years and you perceive anyone in highschool as just a kid. Anyone over the age of 19 dating someone at 17 is absolutely a predator. I even think 19 dating a 17 year old is bad, because at 19 you've been out of highschool for at least a year (or two) and are in a different stage of life than any minor.

Isn’t an age difference greater than five years illegal if the younger one is still a minor (but older than the age of consent)?
@Providence836 жыл бұрын
Jonah Mills "still a minor but older than the age of consent" is an oxymoron as far as I'm concerned because the cut off for both those things is 18. I do recognize different states have different ages of consent but honestly I don't what to know those specifics because that's creepy as hell.
@gumrock_6 жыл бұрын
The age difference doesn't matter, what makes it illegal is exploitation. But the wider the age difference, the less reasonably believed it is that they weren't in a position of authority or trust over the younger party, or that the younger party wasn't being exploited or "corrupted." The close-in-age exemption is like if one party was 17 and the other was 18, but all other relationship age differences have the onus to prove their sincerity
