To drill small holes like this without water coolant we keep a handful of bits (like at least 6) nearby and change bits every 30 seconds or so. This does not make the quartz any softer but does let the off duty bits cool and extend the life of the bit. And maybe try to drill your holes in the quartz instead of the band of sulfides, I suspect that the properties and high metal content make them even worst to drill than the quartz.

Jason, while not a geologist, as a mechanical engineer, I would think you would have better luck drilling at edge between hanging wall and vein in softer bull quartz areas. Then repeat vertically below at edge between footwall and vein. With vertical and hopefully horizontal cracking at edge with country rock, break out with hammer drill chisel bit or single jack as you were doing. Drilling into highly mineralized spots in vein is causing extensive heating on your carbide bits, without being lubricated, for sure. Love your vids!

Might want to check the grade of carbide. Some are for soft, some for hard rock. As usual, a harder blow, and slow rotation, works best in hard rock. Opposite for soft rock. You definitely smoked those bits. An 80 grit silicon carbide bench grinder will touch those up, if the carbide isn't ruined. A hot bit and water is a no no for carbide ( for the other people, not you ).Good luck, and always fun to watch. Thanks.

What about using a water spray to cool your bits? Or a diamond wheel on an angle grinder to cut a slice above and below the vein then hammer in some wedges to cause the rock to split? Cordless cold chisel setup. Failing that just hack away with your pick like a Welsh slave down a Roman gold mine lol.
@marezjraz Жыл бұрын
On your bits. Since it’s quartz try using Diamond Core bits that they use for countertops. I’m a construction worker. Seen the countertop installation guys use those bits for when they install Quartz counter tops.

Life vs investment cost on diamond bits have the highest ROI. Each manufacturer worth thier weight should have a fairly well defined bit needed vs hardness of material breakdown.

My experience with carbide masonry bits is that you’ve got it not let them heat up. You have to keep backing off and let them cool. If you drill continuously you will burn them up in even in concrete, which is soft compared to what you’re doing.

Mayne a kinetic impact from a 1" steel ball going at 500 fps or so would liberate a few chunks? Blow a ball down a 70' piece of PVC with 120psi and see how much rock gets dislodged at the impact.

If drilling in hard material, I run a bit that size, about 30-45 seconds. Then pull and dip in a cup of water to cool. If the water does not sizzle, add 15 seconds to the interval and test again. Doing this adds a bit of time, but keeping your bit from going too far above the boiling point of water, will make it last longer.

I really enjoy your videos. thank you for doing this.

Irrigating your bits will only help. I'm sure that someone makes a rotohammer diamond coated bit. Using chisel and point bits in the jackhammer mode works great for splitting matrix up. It's always wise to take options. But packing this stuff backpack can get heavy.
