Yes, Leslie is such a queen on GH.❤❤❤❤ I take care of my Granddaughters( Rilynn 5 Gigi 3) so I'm glad that she to had that experience with her grandparents.❤❤ I love my daughter (Jessica)very much, but it is difficult because she is bipolar and won't get help. So it's been such a scary ride with her and it hurts me so much. She can be so loving but so hard, abusive to me and verbal to her girls. She went to therapy with me 17yrs old 18 and they put her on something she became worse so she refused to try anything else. She smokes pot which helps but now she's drinking and I pray she goes back for help. So I'm trying to understand by listening to your show which I appreciate. 🙏🙏🙏

Oh Leslie - I have watched you for 40 years - you ate a hard working, wonderful actor. This was a great conversation with Leslie Charleson. I loved how she was able to share about her sister and not knowing what to do during that season of her life. So many people were in the same boat back then. My ex husband suffered from mental illness and it was a very scary time for me, because I did not know what to do. I felt I was walking on egg shells and I made many wrong decisions just trying to navigate such a turbulent time. With God's help I was able to walk through that season and I know today that we have many resources at our finger tips to help us. Back then I felt alone and had family that were very unhappy with me. I was very young just trying to figure things out, literally just 21 or 22 years old. Tell Leslie thank you for sharing and being authentic about her experience, and I am sorry about the loss of her sister. ............. I was surprised to learn that you two had not spoken at length before now having worked on set together for so many years. But not two surprised because I stayed to myself and did not engage with my co-workers for almost 15 years. It wasn't until about 12years in, that I decided to be more sociable and from that time until now I have made really lasting friendships and we are like family now even though I have moved out of state and have a new job. One thing I recall from that experience is the first event I went to out side of work with my co-workers, the host came to me and said how genuinely happy she was that I had come. She really spoke from her heart and it made me feel good! There were people on my job that use to get together all the time and I was never invited because I didn't have a relationship with them. But as soon as I began opening up it was a different story. When I returned for a visit a few years ago, practically every person I worked with met with me at a restaurant to greet me, something set up by one of my closest friends at the job. It was such a blessing and made me cry because they genuinely cared for and love me. So thank you Leslie and Maurice. I loved the show today so much!!!!! ~ Lavenia Balina

I worked in mental health as a Level II facility administrator for 15 years. Our facility housekeeper who was happy and chipper every day and appeared to be the most cheerful person ever, hung herself. We were all blown away. Here we worked with her every day and knew nothing because she didn't want us to. It's a hard thing to live with for those of us left behind. God Bless, Lesley.

I have a story similar to Leslie’s growing up. I never knew my father and my grandparent’s helped to raise me. My mother very reluctantly gave me my father’s name when I was about 23 and this was the early 90’s. She told me she found out he was married and kicked him out of her life and then found out she was pregnant with me. She also told me she didn’t know where he was from but that he wasn’t from the same state she met him in. I recently took a DNA test and found someone who shared my DNA who had the last name I was looking for and I found I have 7 siblings and as soon as I have the money my husband and I are traveling to meet them. I am so over the moon excited and so are they! Thank you so much for sharing Leslie. I’m sorry also for your loss of your sister. You are such a lovely person. I just finished watching this episode of SOM. Maurice, this was one long overdue show. Thank you for bringing the Queen of GH to your show and being so real and raw. We appreciate every episode you do and enjoy your guest. I sometimes figure I'm Bipolar. I got my highs and lows as well. I was sexually assaulted back in December 2021 and I'm 52. A horrible feeling and horrible state of mind. I am going to therapy and still waiting on DNA from the crime lab. I just pray this awful person is caught and prosecuted. I want to face him and ask a ton of questions and hope he answers them for me. I forgive him but I won't ever forget what he did to me! Sorry, I got off topic but it's an awful feeling that I'm going thru.

Looking forward to this. Haven't watched GH in a while (not current epps) but binge watching old episodes like the Susan Moore murder mystery. Leslie Charleson and Stuart Damon have some funny bits as Alan and Monica. Started watching GH as a child in 79 because I was so smitten with the prince from Cinderella. My mom and older sister were watching GH on a day I came home early from school. They didn't even notice I was in the room until I started squealing when I saw "the prince." My sister explained yes it was him but he was playing a new character on a different show. As I got older, she gave me the whole history of GH, which she and mom had watched since day 1 on TV. Anyway, I was hooked and Monica, Alan, Rick and Lesley along with Laura, Scotty, and then Luke kept me hooked for years and introduced me to a host of other characters I loved over the years. As much as I loved the Webbers, the Quartermaines were always the most fun to watch.

Maurice, what a GREAT interview with Leslie. My older sister was diagnosed as BP back in the mid-70's when even Dr's knew very little about it. They pretty much experimented on her with any drug that came on the market. She also refused to stay on her meds and there was nothing we could do. I'm from a HUGE family (10 children) and it was SO challenging trying to help her when she refused to let any of us help; and believe me, we ALL tried endlessly. She passed away in June of this year with breast cancer. She had just turned 75 years old. She went through hell and back so many times. Let me say that she was one of the most intelligent human beings I've ever known. She was beautiful inside and out and loved by everyone who ever met her. I miss her so. Thank you for bringing light and hope too so many others with your State of Mind conversations. Blessings to you! P.S. I'm a hugger! So, look out if we ever meet! 😀😀😀

I grew up in a family that cared for each other but did not express it, especially my mom. My mother in law hugged everyone and taught me the absolute joy in hugging my family. Well, you can imagine my joy when I hugged my family the first time. I cannot even express the joy in that. They were surprised but eventually they all got better too because of my wonderful mother in law. I have watched GH for many many years. I am the only girl the youngest of 6 older brothers and my Dad was clueless on raising a little girl. Even though I did not receive the nurturing and affection from my dad I was completely opposite. Now I am married to someone who never was told by his mom that she loved him nor was his real father around. I married someone that is a lot like my Dad. Love from Texas! I lost a boyfriend of almost three years to self medication of bipolar disorder. He died three years after our breakup of cardiac arrest from drug abuse at age 32. Living with him was a brutal nightmare. I had to leave. I knew he loved me but I could not deal with it any longer. It opened my eyes to mental illness. More than I ever wanted, but I have so much empathy for it now. My childhood best friend was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder when we were in our 20s. We got her to the ER and got her the help that she needed. She is 35 and still going. I love her to pieces. I have seen mental illness up, close and personal. All the best to you Maurice. And you too Leslie. You are awesome! Thank you for your entertainment and your candid honesty. The world needs it. The authoritarianism in the pandemic has been horrendous in my view. I do not want this to ever be able to happen again. P.S. I have two aunts that think you are the hunkiest and best thing on GH since….well….1993. 👅 You do look good. Have a great day!

This was amazing! I love her, she is so wonderful. Always has been, was great hearing her talk about her sister. I had a brother that was bipolar, and he died the same way. I recently started back watching GH after taking a long break. So happy to see a lot of the original characters. Ms Leslie I always have enjoyed watching you especially back in the day with Alan Quartermaine. I really made a connection with you sharing your loss of your sister to suicide in 1996. I lost my brother in 1997, he hung himself in his own backyard. It was the worst news I could ever get, we were very close. And I want to mention how awesome you look! Thanks for sharing💕

Id really like to thank you both for this interview. Leslie opening up about her sister really helped me, I lost someone I loved very mu to suicide in the 90s who was also bi-polar 😔 its something ill never fully understand or get over. He went off his meds. I learned in therapy that there was nothing I could have done, but spent years blaming myself and part of me probably always will. I just wanted to give her a big hug for opening up about that. It helps knowing your not alone. We are the survivors of that disease and we carry it with us. Thank you both very much.

This was great to watch. I, (who am apparently older than dirt!), remember Leslie (and Donna Mills) as sisters on Love Is A Many Splendid Thing; I thought they were so glamorous. It was the first soap I ever watched, I think I was in Junior High…loved that soap! I remember when it was going off the air, writing a letter to the producers to not take it off the air! Not sure I knew where to send it, or if I ever did. I do recall “taping” (pre-VCRs) on my little Panasonic tape recorder…the last episode. Wow…trip down memory lane in the way way back machine here today! 🤣 Anyway, great episode.

Maurice Benard, Thank you for raising awareness on Mental Healthcare Issues. I had depression for years and it wasn't discussed back in the 70's or 80's. I have talked about mental health issues for years! I am a Mental Health Advocate. I encourage people to seek counseling. I am seeing a Psychologist for Caregiver PTSD! Best Wishes to you! Such a powerful conversation, that will help so many . It was very courageous of Leslie to open up about such a painful subject .You Maurice have led the way for folks to feel safe in telling their stories .Your also helping them as well .Some have kept the pain bottled up for years .You are helping me in ways I can't even begin to tell you. I have a 42 year old son who has been living with me for about 6 years .He has Bi-Polar as well as other things .He's trying but refuses to get any help or take any medication.He tried for a short while but will never open up to anyone .He was on drugs for years , got off of them but drinks and usually stays holed up in his room .He's trying to come out more for short periods but it's not good .It's hard to deal with and breaks my heart. I also have a couple of grand children that have problems .One goes to therapy ,but the 16 y/o started refuses meds and finally stopped therapy .They are all good kids ,but not many want to be around my son very often especially when he's drinking .I'm almost 67 and I worry what will happen to him when I go .I've tried to get him to listen to your podcast but he won't. He calls most everyone actors .I tried to get him to read your book .He's a big reader but he won't. I love him dearly but don't know how to help him. I pray all the time. He thinks there are unseen people hiding in the walls causing him all sorts of pain etc .He would do anything to help anyone but also has episodes of extreme anger and there is no reasoning with him .He's also very anti social.I just don't know what to do .I depend on the LORD to deliver him. There's much more to the story, but I just want to say thank you, for giving me hope and comfort as you do for so many . Your work has saved lives and is so important. GoD bless you and your family.

During the pandemic, I thought about many things, suicide was one of them. I also thought about my legacy. It's clear that Maurice will be remembered for his amazing acting ability, but more importantly, his advocacy for those suffering from mental illness. Oh my, what can I say about this GREAT lady so MANY things where do I begin? I've been her # 1 FAN since 1978 when I first saw her on GH as the one & only complex wonderful Monica Bard Webber Quartermaine!!! Yes Leslie deserved to WIN an EMMY many times during her LONG RUN as Monica. I corresponded with her for many years & somehow at one point we lost touch but she was a very SPECIAL person in my life growing up. Many GREAT memories of this AWESOME lady, such a MAGNIFICENT actress & human being!!! Very sad & shocked to hear about tragic events that I was not aware of in Leslie's life.
