State of Mind to me means being 100% present, feeling completely at peace inside of you, not letting your thoughts control your life and always looking for ways to be the best that you can be.
This will be the first in a series here on KZbin, however you can learn more about State Of Mind at www.mbstateofm....
If you'd like to learn more about my life, I've recently released "Nothing General About It - How Love (and Lithium) Saved Me On and Off General Hospital" www.amazon.com...
--------------------------------------
Film and Television veteran, member of the Actor’s Studio, and two time Emmy Award winner Maurice Benard most recently starred as John Gotti in Lifetime’s acclaimed “Victoria Gotti: My Father’s Daughter,” which aired this year; the horror film “Nightmare Cinema,” with Mickey Rourke, which opened the New York Horror Film Festival certified fresh on rotten tomatoes and was in theatres June 21st; the indie films “Hold On,” and “Equal Standard,” alongside Ice T; and Lifetime’s “A Lover Betrayed.”
Among his other film and television credits are David O’Russell’s critically acclaimed “Joy,” with Robert De Niro and Jennifer Lawrence; “Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter”; “Ruby”; and “Mi Vida Loca.” The indie film “The Ghost and the Whale,” produced by Benard’s wife, Paula, in which he starred as a bipolar man losing the battle with his illness after his wife’s death, was a labor of love underscored by his strong commitment to raise awareness about mental health issues.
Although Benard has always worked out of the spotlight mentoring individuals in mental health crisis, a letter from a young man whose brother committed suicide while struggling with mental illness moved Benard to begin a public commitment to mental health awareness outside the confines of “General Hospital.” In 2009, on “Oprah,” he shared with the world his own bipolar diagnosis at the age of 22 and the ensuing struggle to manage the illness, from surviving a stint in a mental institution as a young man to becoming a television star. Benard’s journey with mental illness has also been profiled in magazines including PEOPLE, LA LIFE, and BP. HarperCollins is publishing his memoir about the journey, Nothing General About It: How Love and Lithium Saved Me On and Off General Hospital on April 7, 2020.
He has also lent his face and voice to numerous organizations to further the cause, including International Bipolar Foundation (IBPF), the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), Mental Health America (MHA) and Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services, to name a few. For his contribution to mental health awareness, Benard has received numerous awards, including IBF’s Imagine Award, NAMI’s Lionel Aldridge Award, and the Erasing the Stigma Award alongside Carrie Fischer and Rod Steiger.
In addition to testifying before Congress on mental health issues, Benard’s keynote speaker engagements detailing his experience include the annual conference for The National Manic Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association and to hundreds of students at the University of San Diego.
In August 2018, Benard celebrated 25 years on the award-winning series “General Hospital,” cementing his status as an enduring television icon. The popular character Sonny “Michael” Corinthos, Jr. originated with Benard in 1993, initially written as only a six-month guest arc; however, Benard’s powerful portrayal became wildly popular with fans around the world and the celebrated actor quickly took Sonny from a peripheral to central role in the fictional city of Port Charles. Benard has maintained lead status on “General Hospital” for the past 16 years, garnering nine Emmy Award nominations, in addition to taking the statue home in 2003 and 2019.
Benard was previously on “All My Children” as another popular character, Nico, from 1987-1990.
His many loyal fans have not only tuned in for almost three decades, but also repeatedly nominated Benard for a Soap Opera Digest Award, honoring him as a winner three times. Benard has also received a Prism Award and four Latino Media Arts Award nominations.
Benard’s “General Hospital” character has long been on the forefront of socially relevant issues woven into storylines like AIDS and Alzheimer’s awareness. He also pushed for his character to be diagnosed as bipolar so mental health awareness can be front and center on a daily television platform.

My brother is 35, and his behavior is getting worse, he is now in and out jail for public disturbance and recently he was spitting on cops. He suffers from mental illness was diagnosed as bipolar but he believes he is beyond help. Glad I found this video, of all the meds he has been prescribed I dont believe he had lithium, side not I've been watching General Hospital since I was in grade school I'm 37 now. Yourself and Steve Burton are my favorite charachters on the show and I so appreciate the decades of consistent entertainment you have provided means more then yourself and Steve will ever know.

You retweeted a post I made to you once. My husband's bipolar was diagnosed because we saw you on Oprah. Immediately all made sense, which he agreed when he saw it, and he saw a doctor. He was on medications for many years, and was great, very successful treated. At 45, he chose "to take a break" and stopped both meds abruptly. I woke up and found him hanging in our cellar, left a widow at 41 with 5 children. I never had mental health issues. Now being treated for complicated grief, anxiety, PTSD & depression, not very successfully, and I have 5 kids struggling, all in different ways. I never saw this coming.

Maurice, thank you for speaking out on mental illness. I've only started following you and this subject in the last few months, as well as reading your book. The story you told today about your parents taking you to the mental institution was very similar to a story about my 35 year old son. This past January for several days we noticed he was not himself at all. We finally told him we thought he needed help to figure out what was going on and he agreed to let us take him to an emergency room where he was deemed a threat to himself and he was going to be admitted. Sadly, after his dad and I left the hospital he walked out, went to his home and ended his life. If he had any mental illness, which we now think he did, he did an awfully good job of hiding it from everyone. Listening to you and reading your book has given me such great understanding of what was possibly going on inside him. Thank you again.

Thank you! I've been a fan of yours since Nico on All My Children, and had NO idea you suffered with mental illness. When you appeared on Oprah is when it hit me, along with the storylines on GH with your battle with Bipolar, and with Morgan's battle. They were handled with such grace and dignity. Thank you for shedding light on mental illness. I know it first hand - My mother & I deal with depression, and my 24 y/o son has depression and anxiety. This subject needs to be talked about even the more with this time of Covid-19. My prayers remain with you and yours. You're in God's hands, and He will guide and help us all through it. Bless you!

Your voice is so important. Bi-polar sufferers can have good productive lives and solid families once they are on proram.my dad has been on lithium since the kate '60s he is now 90. He was a Supreme intelligent engineer and scientist. A great father and example. Those who are in early stages of diagnosis need stories like yours to know that they can do this. It is also good for those of us who care for those with disease. Thank you.

I found out at the age of 35 that I was bipolar. I had episodes while on active duty in Germany however, I was never diagnosed nor given medication. They diagnosed me as depressed and suicidal. It was actually 13 years ago that I had my worst experience. I woke up and felt nothing. No fear, no joy, and no sadness. No emotion at all. I knew something was wrong. I called the VA clinic and told my psychiatrist what was going on and he told me to go to the hospital and be admitted. My medication was no longer working. This is also the bad thing with this disorder. It’s difficult to find the right medication for each individual. I’m still having medication changes.

She has Bipolar , I just have depression( brought on by my second pregnancy and post partum ) General Hospital has been a part of our lives for as long as I can remember, as was All My Children ( I loved me some Nico dimples) . Anyway, I know there have been times that your struggle ( storyline and publicly) has inspired my mom to get help when maybe she wasn't quite sure until brought to her attention. Through this and just her strength she has taught my sisters and I to listen to our bodies. Also it is not weakness to say hey I need help. Thank you for all you are doing. I actually just sent her your mission statement and she thanked me

My son has been bipolar as long as I can remember and has been through some of the things you talk about here and in other episodes I have seen already. He has been on so many different medications that did not work for him. They either made him a zombie or made him violent beyond belief and some made it to where he could not sleep at all. I had to stay up and watch him like a hawk . He still has episodes but has found one thing that does help him . He lives in California where he gets medical marijuana and it has made a difference in him. I do remember a time when he tried it years ago and I could not believe the change in him. It was like a light switch went off in his brain and he was calm, could speak and carry on a conversation without flying off in a rage because something triggered him. I won't say I wish he hadn't because I see it, I feel it, and I know it works for him. Many people won't even give alternative medicines a try . But if you are taking something that works for you , then God Bless you and you take it if it helps you . It just never did for him. I am the one who was by his side day in and day out when everyone just wanted to label him as a "bad kid" . He is not a bad kid , he is just misunderstood . He sees the world through a different view than you and me maybe but he is not a bad kid. He has a mental illness. When he was growing up it was harder because of the stigma of "Oh he is mentally ill" . I cried night after night and prayed for him to find real help . I myself have many phobias and have high anxiety and social anxiety disorder is the worst for me . Mine are nothing like my son's but I do understand him and I did my research and did everything I could for him. I am proud of where he has come. I am thankful you have found a measure of peace for yourself. Sorry for the ramble, but your stories have touched me.

Thank you Maurice. Hey now we all are in group therapy together at home online. Good need to be home. You brought up a good point situations haunt the mind like for you the Exorcist movie. I don't even like those words. I saw small parts on TV who seems for years put small parts on TV. My movie trouble was Planet of the Apes at a drive in my parents sat up front than Mom turned and saw my face she said my eyes were saucers . In shock about three years old, in my mind the apes were the other side of the Earth and on there way to rule the planet. My parents had thought I was sleeping. There were other scares couple times at school from school books. Might as well say , the Mayans did not go well in the mind. The go in need for meds started with UTI not sleeping for 8 days having electric shocks in my brain ( not done to me , zaps in the head) . Day eight constant running sound story going on in my neighbors voice and her son. Take your meds , let your Doctor know to find one that helps coping quieting. Maurice any electric zaps the ones that you jump trying to sleep. Anyone else have movie or school books trouble? Hospital in early thirties Thanksgiving and Christmas .

I have been a HUGE fan of yours for years!! I bought your book so far LOVE it!! I suffer from Depression and PTSD I went through 3 very traumatic things in my life, so I was diagnosed with both of these back in 2007 when my son's were ripped away from me by DCF cuz I had a addiction to percocet I guess I used pain pills to escape the pain of my mom walking out my Dad, sister and I when I was 5 and she was 18 months old, she was cheating on my Dad with the man who is my stepfather to this day he was her boss. Then when I was 15 DCF took me from my Dad due to my gym teacher reporting bruises on me my Dad was born in Portugal and came here when he was 8 yrs.old he was raised old school so I got the belt on the bare butt. Anywho I'm rambling on basically I changed my life around I've been sober for 9 years I take Lexapro for depression and Neurontin and clonidine for the PTSD your State of Mind videos really help and I appreciate all the work and advocating you do for mental health and I pray for you everyday and myself and all other people out there suffering from mental illness! He will recommend lithium to anyone definitely changed his world I don’t believe it’s a magic bullet because we certainly still had ups and downs along the way, however he is 21 yrs old and if it weren’t for his medication he may not be here today.

Thank you for this. I am a huge fan of yours and almost old enough to be your Mom. Have an adult son with bipolar 1 w. schizoaffective disorder and it has been a difficult journey. He was a normal boy and teen; had a son and a career before he came down with this horrible illness. Has been hospitalized a few times and is now on a good combination of meds but suffers from anxiety disorder and has become anti social. We love him and hopefully will be here on earth for him for a long time. By the way...I have watched General Hospital from the very beginning, looking forward to it after I got home from school every day. Wow, that certainly was a long time ago LOL. Looking forwward to seeing you on her and hearing all about your journey. I don't do instagram, so miss out on alot. Stay well and God Bless.

Thank you so much for doing this. I really love that you take what you have been through and through this forum, and being willing to be vulnerable. And that you are not afraid to tackle the big issues but also just show the passion you have for helping others and how much it obviously means to you. Of course, I am a huge fan of your work on GH and I think the character development of Sonny (and Mike) resonates with me because I do know your history and showing your mental health challenges through your character makes it authentic and how we are all connected in some ways. It also helps to remove the stigma that seems to go along with mental health. Work is being done to remove that, and your story and willingness to be there, because in reality, these moments, the ones you are sharing and the guests that you have on discussing stories and very deep feelings, struggles, surviving and thriving. You continue to make a difference in so many ways and thank you, just thank you :)

When I go through bad ones, I don’t want anyone around and I just set there for days weeks, who know. It’s like I get frozen in place, brain goes blank. Now what happened the last time, for a long time I couldn’t make decisions so I didn’t leave the house. I couldn’t even decide what to wear so I didn’t. Didn’t drive coz I didn’t want to decide which way to turn.

My boyfriend is bipolar and has been trying to get in treatment programs for the last month and a half and because of his insurance and area he lives he has been getting the run around and turned away. This further sends him in a tailspin and he feels like he is on a ledge. This is unacceptable!!!!!! I could only imagine how the struggle for others will be as more people realize they have mental health issues and try to turn for help in low income communities. There are less efficiently run facilities in these community as well as health insurance for some doesn’t accurately cover treatments.
