There is a small typo! At 15:55 I accidentally spelled Beacon, Beckon. I apologize for this! And it’s beacon park yard not Beacon hill yard
@ruffian29523 жыл бұрын
When I worked in and out of Beacon Park I was told the yard got its name from an old horse racing oval in the immediate vicinity. Personally I felt it was because the politicians on Beacon Hill were always meddling with it from the construction of the turnpike days.

What other commuter train systems in the USA closes off the cab car and most cars during off peak hours? I'm trying to compare the MBTA to others around the USA. Why does the MBTA often during peak hours only open one car and one door only, and you can board and exit where you want to, or where its more convenient?
@BostonBeaconPark4 жыл бұрын
Alright so I am not an expert about other commuter railroads, however on the MBTA I know that it’s all down to logistics. First off (despite current events in 2020) MBTA likes put as many people into car on off peak trains so the conductors don’t have to walk the full train in between each station checking tickets. Also it saves money only opening the door at one location as they only need one or two conductors instead of 4. Hopefully this helps.
@Spaceshotx74 жыл бұрын
@@BostonBeaconPark First of all, its ridiculous the MBTA likes to cram as many passengers into the least amount of cars as possible. Also, at high level platforms, one crewmember should be able to remotely open all available doors remotely. The problem with the way they do it is to ensure long dwelling times at stations, therefore causing delays. Are you sure you haven't road any other commuter railroad?

@@BostonBeaconPark There is only one conductor the rest are ticket collectors. I may be in error but open coaches and the assignment of train service personnel adhered to "working" coaches was the agreement the Boston and Maine had with the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (BRT) prior to the MBTA entering the commuter service. Long Island, MetroNorth, and SEPTA all had "working" coach agreements prior to my retirement from railroad service. Such arrangements may have been altered since.

@@Spaceshotx7 The closure of the "cab" car has to do with a safety concern. Evidently most passenger injuries and fatalities in the event of collisions occur in the first coach when it is adapted to train operation. I was a passenger on a Boston and Maine single Budd car when it hit a fuel truck at Second Street crossing in Everett, Massachusetts in 1966. It is a cinch to conclude deaths and injuries would have been reduced or eliminated if it had been a two car consist. Dozen killed, eighteen injured. Personally, during my own railroading career I preferred engines on the headend of my passenger trains when multiple highway crossings were traversed. When operating single Budds I closed the window shade to the vestibule door window. Most of my time was over the Shoreline, lots of crossings in Rhode Island and Connecticut. When not engaged in lifting tickets I would seat myself away from adjacent mainlines... sideswipes.

@@ruffian2952 They claim its for national security reasons since 9/11, not for safety concerns. But I find that ridiculous.

If you would rather be precise the track off the main at Riverside will take you to where the trolleys end at MBTA Riverside. There was a lumber yard at the end of track serviced until the 1970s by the Boston Local. Boston and Albany local passenger service was looped prior to trolley cars via Riverside to South Station.
