Eiht's explanation helps explain why some rappers stay in the streets even though they have hit records. For example, when Fetty Wap got busted everyone said "Fetty has sold millions of records, why was he still selling drugs". Same with Quando Rondo, Young Thug, and a list others.

Most of them don't own the money they make when signed to a major label. It's taxable, garnished, and mismanaged. The labels know they gonna make their money back ten fold. Dr. Dre and Cube left Ruthless because they weren't getting royalties. Performance money is only enough until it's time to re-up. The street money is what they own, but that life is gonna have a lot of risks involved if you not moving correctly. That's why they're always getting locked up.

The music industry always has been and always will be corrupt. That's why so many artists go independent. Even today most artists have no idea about the industry and how contracts work etc and they just happy to get a deal and the labels know this. That is why most artists have short careers because it is more profitable for label to keep cycling in new inexperienced talent and dump them when they gain knowledge and demand more money better contracts etc. The really talented ones have longevity but a very small percentage.

I worked in the music industry and Eiht tells nothing but truth. Artist do not make money off their record sales. Most times they are not even making a full dollar on each record sold. This is why artist are pressured to make these pop friendly records and cross over. The artist make most money off touring as Eiht said and live off credit cards.
