I'll tell you this, Nellie was wrong. It has nothing to do with the fast pace of life for riding on the train. The issue is is that New York and Harlem in New in New York City and general they're just very literate people so the reason why hip-hop sounded like that is because it came clearly from spoken word. spoken word poetry and of the beatniks and all that type of thing in the Greenwich Village and the West Village in Harlem in Brooklyn and you know in Midtown in Columbia University all of that is what made Hip Hop New York hip-hop sound the way it did. That's why I Philadelphia Hip Hop was similar. Because on the East Coast people are highly literal and they are very literate. In the midwest I don't know if those people are as literal or illiterate so lyricism may not have meant that much to them because they were just relaxing like you said writing in their car
@mondayschild1956
@mondayschild1956 Жыл бұрын
@@broncomcbane6382 I'm going to have to respectfully disagree on the literacy piece. That Midwest vibe has its own flavor, but linguistics and literacy are not the same. Respect to the elements and origins of hip hop, it was, by its very nature, bound to grow. It couldn't just be a New York thing because it was too far reaching. Hip hop is the antiphony (call & response) of its generation, and to that end, Nelly's view is valid. I appreciate Lyte being able to receive it in the way that she did. Makes for good forum.

@@smarke76 legend or not (im a fan of Mc Lyte for the record), it is wack as fuck to tune out an entire coast because they sound different or have different sensibilities when it comes to hip hop. It the same wack ass xenophobia that makes "oldheads" diss the younger gen as "not saying nothing." Just because you're a legend it doesn't exempt you from wackness. it just means you have a lot more "riders" who won't hop off when you get to talking nonsensical (i.e. R. Kelly, Bill Cosby, Kanye West). it doesn't make you less of a legend, only shows that wackness and legendary statuses are not mutually exclusive.

We from the time when "Fight The Power" was the movement n we all had em African/Black Fist medallions. Wearing Sergio Tachino sweats Kangol hats, Gazelle frames. Pumas/Adidas. Those were the days. Remembered making them mixtapes off the radio 105WBLS/92KTU. Then the mixtapes came out with Kid Capri, DJ SnS n the Homicide Squad, DJ Doo Wop etc. Man I could go in on this subject.
