That was epic! McAffee in the snow and ice. Beautiful!! Looked slippery up there. Glad you all had the spikes. Looks like a really nice and warm fire there at the end at the shelter.

Props for getting a fire going in that. Few people experience snow in the wilderness. The sites, sounds, smells... everything is different. Beautiful and dangerous, makes the simple things mean so much more.

Still have all that ice under that snow. It’s so beautiful. I’m finally going to invest in some spikes myself. I’ve seen through your videos how valuable they are.

C-Jack, sporting a full foot set of spikes...those look almost like some lightweight crampons. You should notice a definite difference over those minis with just two pins. Best of luck and safety...good to have the company. Toastin' the tootsies by the fire - that's livin'.

No way! 😅 Your a brave soul 😉. I'd be afraid I'd slide right on off the top of the knob cleats and all. My friend tried to convince me I needed a pair for my local hikes and I didn't believe her. She does a lot of walking on the mail route. I guess they're definitely a wise investment. Thanks for another great video! Be careful, stay safe and enjoy your Hike. 🚶🥾🌲🙏

Man, I don't know about you but I'd be terrified to stand on that slab of solid ice atop McAfee Knob without spikes, knowing that it's possible to slide right off!

What kind of spikes are those?
@DonD-m6i16 күн бұрын
They’re just standard microspikes you can buy them any outdoor store or online. Lots of brands, cheap, used all the time in winter. His are Kahtoola.

@@LifesvagabondI went hiking this morning in the snow wearing my Altra 5 shoes. I had on darn tough socks. A little snow sneaked in around the top of the sides of my Altras but my feet were never cold or wet (should have worn my gaiters). I think CJ is wearing Altra Lone Peaks but he may have changed back to 7 at some point.

Im hiking in running shoes that are even more breathable than trail runners in winter, in normal hiking socks, even at freezing or under temperatures. As long as i keep moving my feet stay warm even when they get completely soaked like now with the snow and slush from the snow. Im a very heavy at 220lbs at 6"4 and hike very fast at 4,7 m/h as my normal speed with very small feet. The energy the feet have to produce is so high that they get hot very fast and stay hot. Especially when i have to to hike up a hill and im not even wearing a heavy backpack. I also just wear the most breathable long summer pants as everything would make me sweat. Sometimes i wear a short tight compression shorts only around the thighs and when i come home my thighs are colder than my feet and calves, my calves are glowing hot, same as my feet. I can't wear SealSkinz or some Thermo socks as i just sweat in these and my feet get even wetter with no possibility for the water to escape and dry. It's really all about hiking fast and the energy the feet and calves have to produce, because when i cycle, thermo Socks and Sealzskinz with a normal Cycling summer canvas shoes are not enough, as the feet now do almost nothing in cycling and additionally you get 20 m/h driving wind or more which cools them off.

Do you use a down or synthetic sleeping bag. And what has you experience been with down in wet and cold conditions. I've seen many hikers talk negatively about down in wet conditions, because you can't keep it dry and once it goes wet it looses all it's heating abilities. Granted the difference between East Coast wet and Europe wet is pretty big.
