Please note, due to length of the video, (probably due to it not wanting to start,) I will probably have about 3 different videos of this baler.
This baler is a McCormick-Deering No. 50-AW Pickup Baler. Powered by a International Harvester, Cub tractor engine. By the engine code this is a 1952. This is a wire baler, the twine version was a 50-T. I do believe that these were made from 1944 to 1952, so this one was on the tail end of things.
I picked up this old haybaler at a local tractor show, the Threshermans Reunion in Pontiac, Ill. It was in the traders row, a local scrap man evidentially brought it in. I am glad he thought it was too good to junk. I was in good looking shape, not all rusty, engine free, plunger was about stuck in place. It looked like it had not run in, who knows 30 + years. Well don't know if I got took but $575.00 later it was mine.
It does not have an electric start so we had to hand crank it. The part 1 video got lengthy as it just did not want to start. I will be uploading some video of it baling as well. I hope you all enjoy.

Grandads 45W bailer had a continental engine on it. T stood for twine. W stood for wire.

My granddad had a 45T bailer with a Continnetal engine on it. He let the engine freeze up. I bought one as a kid that the engine was froze up. I can remember picking up alfalfa bales that had been rained on numerious times, and remember seeing water come out of the chamber. They weighed a ton.

William Christopher Yea I can believe it. The 50 also had the Continental engine as a option. Or I should say the first 50 balers only had the Continental, as the Cub engines were not out yet.

Suggestion! Check to be sure that the flywheel is loose from the crankshaft. I failed to do that when I restored my T50. We baled for a couple seasons and then hit a wad of wet hay. The flywheel was stuck to the shaft and instead of sheering the pin it broke the plunger rod. There ended my T50 baler project and baler.

Biggest problem with these and the W-4 they were used mainly for baling and discing , which creates more dust , Thus filling the oil in the breather can if it gets more than 1" deep it chokes it out so it`s not sucking fuel right , Change the oil scoop out the dust way she goes , Leart from dear experience on my Our cub W-4 -6 -- Put pint ATF in the motor oil it`ll clean up the lifters and valve guides run smoother .

did it seem to get a little better compression after it ran a while and kind of limbered up the rings ? seemed a little weak when you first started cranking it?

In comparison it seems like a single cylinder Briggs and Stranton lawn mower engine has more compression than this old Cub.

I was at an auction about 10 years ago. there was a 50T for sale. there was no crank either. I happened to mumble out loud: "How do you start it?" and someone standing there replied: "you have to put a crank on the PTO, but it looks like they sheared the dowel off, so you had to start it the hard way" "what's the hard way?" I asked you engage the PTO belt, stand on a spoke in the flywheel and jump down on it. you had to keep your hand on the engagement lever or you'd twist off your leg like a turkey drumstick!" I thought to myself: I had to have this widowmaker. I bid $250 and stopped because I ran out of money. someone paid $575 for it. harvested the motor for a cub he was rebuilding and scrapped the baler. shame.

great find there! The reason I looked up this baler is because I have the engine and pieces of one these balers scattered all over the old property and had no idea what it looked like. Did you give the engine 's cylinder bores a good dose of oil down each plug hole ?

WHY didn't you hook a belt to it and run it from the Farmall I saw

William Christopher Ya know I had a friend at a tractor show ask me about the same thing. I was like, deeeeerrrrrr why didn't I think of that. If to do over I would try to hook a flat belt from the engine pulley to a tractor pulley to spin it over faster. But now that it has been run I could go out there today, choke it a bit, 2 cranks and it is running.

Starting fluid in a gas engine is about the worst thing you can use. It will dry out your cylinders and score the bores really bad. A pump spray bottle full of gas is what I would use that or a a windex bottle full of gas
