McCormick Deering No. 50 - AW hay baler with Farmall CUB tractor engine. Part 3

This part 3 of trying out this old baler, baling hay, some light 2nd cutting grass, alfalfa, in Oct. 2014. The plunger is getting a little looser and the hay is a bit lighter windrows so we could go faster. It was baling pretty good and did not miss to many, I might need to make a few adjustments. It makes real nice bricks for bales.
This baler is a McCormick-Deering No. 50-AW Pickup Baler. Powered by a International Harvester, Cub tractor engine. By the engine code this is a 1952. This is a wire baler, the twine version was a 50-T. I do believe that these were made from 1944 to 1952, so this one was on the tail end of things.
I picked up this old haybaler at a local tractor show, the Threshermans Reunion in Pontiac, Ill. It was in the traders row, a local scrap man evidentially brought it in. I am glad he thought it was too good to junk. I was in good looking shape, not all rusty, engine free, plunger was about stuck in place. It looked like it had not run in, who knows 30 + years. Well don't know if I got took but $575.00 later it was mine.
It does not have an electric start so we had to hand crank it. Please check my other videos for more on this baler.

That`s a sweet little B model , Our big M was like this Crop wheeler - Those are good for kids , Better get some magnets for the cows though Hardware disease is easy with wire ties .

I spent some quality time running a baler like this about 60 years ago. Twine version. It worked quite well, not too many misses.

We had a twine model, the knitters were a pain so my brother and I sat on the twine boxes and fixed missed knots. There were dolly wheels on the front so the weight wasn't on the tractor we used a W6 to haul it. Shear pins in the fly wheel like to break but that's part of farming. Lots of memories.

The bailer is working great. I guess the one that I worked with was a 50-T. I remember a wire baler as a young kid in the 40's they used it to bale straw. Have no idea what make it was but remember it made big bales with maybe 4 strands of wire on the bales.

I've got a restored B with 2 row check cultivators on it. Had a similar baler with a big Wisconsin engine on it but was made an offer I couldn't turn down. And miss it but still not enough to wish I'd turned him down. Man had a fat wallet and wanted my baler lol.

Used to have the PTO version (was it no.25..?), The knotters got steadily worse over the years, before it went as scrap... The flywheel weighed quite a bit, so I got almost what I paid for it.

My grandfather had a McCormick International 55 baler (can't remember if was a "T" Twine or "W" Wire style) .This unit had a Super A style engine (113 ci) engine and worked reliably for years.

Does that hay pickup lower down any further? Seems like it was too high and tossing the hay instead of feeding up and into the chamber...

Your Famall B looks a bit light to be pulling such a heavy load. Your lucky the front end isn't bobbing up and down.How come you don't use the 400 @4:22 across the road?

Joel Jessup I am not sure. It is pretty heavy. We weighed the tongue with not hay in it, at about draw bar height and it was almost 500 pound! So it might be getting to be a bit much for the cub. But with hay in it, it would be about 2 bales worth past the axle so that would lighten the tongue up some, and if it was good and dry, and if not pulling a rack of hay too, it might pull it. With the B and about 50 bales of hay, that old B could barely handle it on flat ground in 4th, a little bit of a hill and I had to go to 3rd.
