McCoy passed away today. A major loss for all of us. R.I.P.

This album always saddened me, I could really feel how Coltrane's death affected Tyner. Now i listen to this track to mourn over Tyner's death. Rest in paradise.

"Alfred McCoy Tyner (December 11, 1938 - March 6, 2020) was an American jazz pianist and composer known for his work with the John Coltrane Quartet." I saw him two shows at "Rick's Cafe'" on the Golden Mile in Chicago in 1981and again in Cincinnati, Ohio a little later on. Got to shake his massive hands. RIP McCoy, thank you.

McCoy being a pianist is automatically a harmonic player. His great and former boss John Coltrane was a great harmonic player for many years but eventually went outside harmony and then outside melody. Eventually he liberated music from its own self. This music is still quite spiritual and reminds me of the sound of the primitive lining hymns I grew up listening to as a child in the African-American church. There is nothing more passionate than the combination of religion and music. Words too.

Getting back to listening to some of the stuff I've loved for many years. This is one of my favorite solo piano improvs. He was definitely in the zone in this. 🙂👍

Such a brilliant combination of evocative musical qualities. Saw him with Pharaoh Sanders and Coltrane’s son. Stayed 2 sets and did not want to leave in the presence of his and Pharaoh’s genius! Only he could take on this song after John Coltrane’s transcendent version.

I love McCoy!! This is so beautiful. I saw him this summer at Marcus Garvey Park and his playing was magnificent; just as special was each time he grabbed the mic to speak--it was obvious he was thrilled to say something, and his words were as satisfying to the soul as everything else he does.

I enjoyed the experience of listening to the genius of McCoy Tyner and his trio captured live in northern California circa 2002. His performance was a singular musical statement to Jazz as an endearing and reverent American art form. BRILLIANT!!!!

There is some resemblance to the original tune. You can hear him play the head and how he moves through the original changes can be heard vaguely. In alot of jazz, the point isn't to recreate the original tune but to use the outline of the original tune in order to explore more interesting ideas. This is very far away from the original tune and can be described as difficult to listen to, but the original tune is certainly there. But more importantly, McCoy's own personal explorations are here.

Well, that's fine. I'd just note that works of advanced genius are almost never everyone's thing. I don't think McCoy travels any farther from the song than Brahms does from the theme by Paganini, if that's what you mean--those variations get pretty remote. Anyway, McCoy's piano concept is definitely one of my favorite things.

@marcusstoica8 жыл бұрын
+ZionAfuang So true. His playing was already so powerful and charged. John's death really affected him. The very existence of this album shows that of course, but the music shows.
@musemusic62274 жыл бұрын
Interesting observation. McCoy was a master accompanist to Coltrane, so much so that Coltrane said McCoy offered him 'the harmonic platform, allowing him to spread his wings' (not the exact words but that was the idea). It feels like there's the ghost of Coltrane present, and that he's called him up. It's like we're not just listening to one musician but two.

+marktarmannpiano George Winston is the man who made me want to play the piano, and when 7:41 came along I said the same thing! What's surprising about Winston's career is that he was an accomplished blues/jazz pianist as well before he made his albums. Very talented man. Winter into Spring still stands as my favorite album of all time.

i heard an NPR concert a long time ago. he plays very solid stride, and very tasteful harmonica, and is a bit like Tom Waits in his ability to talk to and connect to his audience. sparser and more subdued, obviously, charming and surprisingly amusing.
