It is certainly not an overstatement when one says that these Jazzicians are better than "best". Michael Brecker was the epitome of Organic Real Jazz - be it Rock Jazz, Fusion, Straight-ahead Jazz, Spiritual Jazz, Pop Jazz... And Michael Brecker could have tailored a Ballad into such greatness as never before heard or seen - in his time. He never stopped growing as a musician - and as a person of noble character and exemplary citizenship. Michael lives! Long live Michael!

I'm smiling because everybody has commented on Hancock, Brecker, Scofield (and why not) but as a percussionist (or when placed next to Mr Alias, someone who hits things) I have to say that Don Alias is pure, understated brilliance. A fantastic line up and so very sad to know that both Don Alias and the incomparable Michael Brecker are no longer with us.

You didn't think Sco could play the changes? You should check out some other guitar players Hancock has teamed up w/: Black bird McKnght, Wah Wah Watson, Santana, Lionel Loueke - all great in their own right, but definitely not exactly traditional Jazz players either. So I say other than Metheny, Scofield is the closest thing to 'Jazz guitar' Herbie's ever had in any of his bands. Plus Sco is the only one of the aforementioned bunch who has ever gigged extensively and recorded w/Miles. Not even Pat Meth had that honor. So I say that's also a factor for Sco landing this gig.

I can't get enough of Herbie, Holland, DeJohnette, and Don Alias. Brecker and Scholfield add the finishing touch. Herbie, Holland, DeJohnette with Pat Metheny back in 91 is also great. Another Herbie great is at Newport Jazz in 2008 with Holland, Chris Potter, and a phenominal drummer I can't remember his name. Again Herbie Hancock in my opinion is the greatest all around keyboard player. Michael Brecker, Don Alias, Pat Metheny playing with Jaco and Joni Mitchell on Shadow and lights in 1979 is also Awesome especially Brecker and Jaco trading chops.
