The craziest thing I ever saw was a wing chun guy in Tulsa named Josh Jones that told me, over the course of 6 years that: he was a doctor of Chinese medicine, he was part of the IDF, he was a CIA operative, he was a killer for the mafia, he played guitar for Ozzy Osbourne, he could change his body weight with his “‘mind powers”, he could manipulate electricity with his mind, that he was a “foretold white man” raised by a ninja clan (so Beverly Hills Ninja in real life?), he had a fan club in Eastern Europe that tracked his movements, and he killed a bull with his bare hands at 5 years old. Yet despite all this he was a man in his mid-30s that lived with his parents and was always broke.

I had an old Kung-Fu instructor who said his students win a lot of tournaments. The technique was to "accidentally" nut kick the opponent and take the warning. Then fake another nut shot after the poor SOB recovered, while they go to defend, go for a winning shot. IMO that is not a very honorable way to "win" a tournament fight, but I do think it was funny to hear how they "won" so much.

When I was in high school, a bunch of friends of mine and I all trained in different types of martial arts and different schools. Occasionally we would visit each other's schools just to see what was going on and what they were doing in case we wanted to cross train. It usually ended up leading to that. The craziest thing I ever saw was when I went to a place that was teaching ninjutsu. I probably should have known better but.... They had this old man who they called Grand Master such and such blah blah blah... He had a whole bunch of people stand in a big line and he gently touched the first person and then halfway through the line. Somebody would fly out of the line like they were hit with a bunch of energy. A couple of my friends and I asked to be a part of it but we're told it was too dangerous. Needless to say, we gave our friend who is in that school a lot of teasing and ragging over the next couple years. It was the source of a lot of laughter when we would go out for beers. But that was definitely the craziest thing I ever saw and this guy kind of reminded me of him.

Freshman year of highschool my buddy had a video of guys like this. Him and his dad were big into martial arts. His dad some how came across this vhs ( some no touch knockout guy you've covered) but kept it locked up in a safe because he thought if we watched it we'd test things out on each other. Thankfully even at that age I felt something was a bit fishy

The craziest thing in martial arts that I saw was about 25 years ago. My once step dad claimed he had all kinds of black belts and mastered a bunch of different martial arts. My older brother, who was a thug type guy, and he got into an argument at a restaurant that escalated to them both going outside to the parking lot. My step dad started doing the poses and nonsense "dances" that you see before fights in the old english dubbed kung fu movies, and my brother just laid into him with a nice hook. From there on, it just wasn't too pretty. Step dad tried to do wing chun type punch deflection and grabs but just kept getting annihilated. I think he got two hits in that looked pathetic, and my brother later told me he didn't even feel. I think about that day and wish so badly that everyone had cell phones with cameras like we do now for just that one day. It was gloriously hilarious, I bet that old step dad had a mastery of this martial art as well.

Craziest thing I have seen was when I was reffing a bjj match. There was a pretty good size difference between the two ladies and the one who initiated the takedown drove forward and the other girl posted her arm instead of breakfalling. Then i saw and heard the arm snap. I stopped the match immediately and the girl who broke her arm was like "why did you stop it bro" I responded with I'm pretty sure you arm is broken and you don't want to look at it. Needless to say we called an ambulance, carted her off and then continued with the next bracket 😅

Was on a IBJJF seminar once and the lecturer was a seasoned purple belt with around 150 matches. He told a story where he was spectating a match in Brazil and one of the two guys landed in an armbar and his arm got snapped. But he didnt tap or verbally tap, so the ref just let the fight go and he nonchalantly CONTINUED with a snapped arm until the ref noticed somethings wrong with his flailing arm XD

I had an instructor who claimed that he could grow the length of his arms using chi. He held his hand out with his elbow down and tucked in (tan sao in wing chun) and would measure from his inner elbow to the end of his fingers using his other hand spreading his thumb and little finger out.He would get one measurement before he started, and a longer measurement once he was supposedly complete. I noticed by trying it on myself that the exact angle that you held the arm mattered. If you picked the same starting point on your skin, but varied the angle of the arm even slightly, It would make a massive difference in the final measurement. This is because why the point you start at on your skin seems to remain in the same position it is actually moving over your muscles and changes anatomical position thus changing the starting location of the measurement. I told him I didn't believe it and that the change in measurement is due to the angle change and an imprecise measuring tool (his hand). So he got a tape measure and I got someone to assist me in holding his arm at the exact correct angle while I measured it and he couldn't reproduce the reaction. His excuse for this was that he was tired from doing it too many times before. He never offered to test it again, and never mentioned that during a class again as long as I was at the school.

@Michael K-bomb he was a good instructor overall. I had been training with another instructor for about 9 years at that point and he wanted me to cross train somewhere else to brush up on my basics. So I joined this particular school. Going back to basics was good and the instructor definitely helped me improve my skills, but he definitely had some closeted weird beliefs. I was at the school for about 2 years when that came up, and I was there another 2 years after that. There was nothing else he really pushed that was BS other than the idea that wing chun alone is the ultimate art. I love doing wing chun, but I also train in grappling and more long range kicking focused arts because I know it has holes that need to be addressed.
@M_K-Bomb
@M_K-Bomb Жыл бұрын
@@neizha Oh, OK. See I thought you would have been pretty new to it and didn't know any better. But, fair enough that he didn't push any other BS and you just all moved on from it and you didn't suspect he was a hack as he still had something to offer. But, it's interesting how it's not just talentless teachers who would push the BS.

When I was teaching in California in 1982-3ish my teacher was a well you’d call him a tyrant today. If we really messed up teaching and he was pissed enough he would kick everyone out of the school, lock the door, pull the blinds and beat the offending teacher from one end of the mat to the other. When said teacher had recovered enough the school was unlocked and students were let back in. He was a 6’4 muscle bound biker and was freaking terrifying! That was the craziest thing I have seen in a martial arts school. Happened too often.

The craziest thing I have seen but was not bullshit is when I lived in Beijing and studied Shuai Jiao under some very respected experts. One well known instructor would hold a 30-foot cylinder type of banner type thing. I think it was made from bamboo. He could hold it on the tip of his thumb without moving his body. Also, he would tilt his head up and balance it on his chin again never moving his body. It would just stay in place. I have pics of it in an old kung fu tai chi magazine article I wrote on Shuai Jiao.

I've seen quite a few crazy things over the years, so it's hard to pick one! The first one that comes to mind was a demonstration at a tournament in Detroit somewhere in the late '90s. The craziest thing I ever witnessed was during a demo. The “master” had 1 of his students, who was a minor, meditate with his body lying between 2 chairs(1 at the head and the other at the feet.) The master then balanced an apple on the minor student’s throat and cut the apple in half with a katana. This was almost 30 years ago and I was a student myself and a minor and I was absolutely horrified. He was my master as well and I left soon after. I almost never practiced again because of that.

We actually had this other "master" invited into our school once, and he did that thing where everyone lines up and pushes on the back of the person in front of them. It wasn't no touch nonsense, he was holding his ground, but it was also definitely a bit of a parlour trick. Basically, it's not one stream of force. If you push hard enough, the person in front of you will struggle to keep their arms straight, and the person in front probably doesn't want to be a dick about it. Anyway, as I recall, he came to "adjust" my form a few times because I was actually pushing with a little force.

Rico got choked out, I mean out out, and came to then pounded the mat. He looked around in silence and grabbed his things and left. I didn't know what was happening so I just shut up and observed...

Honestly, the craziest thing I think I've seen in martial arts are people claiming that Bruce Lee could defeat Mike Tyson. I've seen a lot of it lately; seems people are making the comparison these days a whole lot more than they used to. The sad, delusional no-touch stuff and so on is one thing; that's basically a religious cult, and it's got its own irrationality and social conditioning behind it. But the people who believe Bruce Lee could beat Tyson are generally otherwise sane individuals. Which, somehow, makes it seem crazier to me.

Got kicked out of white belt karate when I was like 5. My brother was 7. They taught us front kicks and some horse stance and basic punches. The sense told us to spar but it was "self dee fence!" (We had to yell it like that that several times before each class) so we needed to fight to win quickly. My brother came in and I front kicked him (knee extension not a teep) strait to the sack as hard as I could... He asked me, "why did you do that!" I said, "you said fight to win quick". They didn't let me back. 😂

This guy & several similar "chi" demonstrations, mostly from Aikido & T'ai Ch'i, are the craziest things I have seen because I don't understand how the "master" gets his students to go along with the charade. On the other hand, I have broken a broad-head arrow against my trachea (point in a thick piece of leather) more than once & between the trachea of me & a female partner we folded a 4 foot piece of half inch reinforcing bar in half so flat we could hug. I don't know how that worked. We were, of course, using "chi" or "Nuum" or maybe it was some "wt?" & no one was hurt, etc. I don't know what the trick was but it was interesting at the time. So .... how do they get the students to go along with the charade?

Ninja Bob is one of craziest people I ever met, who believed he was a real ninja because he took out admin a ninja tabloid, and then decided to attack the school I was in at the time. I also knew a martial arts who had an ovetwhelming Messiah complex while taking on the persona of a character from a time store novel called the destroyer series. And I have also seen a martial arts school in Toronto. Called 'Crazy Bob's House of Death.' this is real ...He is still there as far as I know. There was also a supposed kungfu school once called "the Sacred Sword". There believed in the Qi energy as a defense stuff. They were pretty out there. The instructor told me that if he thought about the colour Blue, noone could hit him, they would miss. I met some fun people during my travels over my career in the arts.
