I can't think of any director examples offhand, but actors do this a lot and screenwriters do it occasionally. Stephen King for instance talks about not remembering a movie he wrote.

@@chriswest6988 while this is true (it's actually the book "Cujo"), King was on a ridiculous amount of drugs at the time which caused the memory loss. As far as i know, the McElboys don't go harder than anxiety meds and weed.
