McFarlane's Reserve vs Wilderness Trail 6 Year - Drink This or That?

It's a Drink This or That - Wheated Edition. In one corner we have the new McFarlane's Reserve, a 90 proof, 3 year wheater from parts unknown. In the other corner we have Wilderness Trail Bottled In Bond, a 100 proof, 6 year wheater from Wilderness Trail Distillery. The former costs $22 while the later costs $75. Is the extra money worth 3 years and 10 points in proof? Let's find out.

I'm probably wrong, but I thought the WT wheated bourbon had a brownish/yellowish label. That bottle looks exactly like my 6 year high rye WT bourbon.

I agree. My WT wheated BiB has a yellow (not gray) label. Me thinks they reviewed the 6yr standard bourbon instead.

Well I am super curious to try it now just because of the name(I have Scottish MacFarlane blood running through my veins). I doubt it can stand up to Rebel 100 though at a similar price point for a wheater.

TW just dropped a McFarlane's Reserve 12 year finished in cabernet casks. IT IS DELICIOUS!!! Go try it at your local TW! I'm betting that is the Bardstown that you are referring to.

I picked up the MacFarlane's Reserve about a month ago. I am not a big bourbon guy, but rather prefer highland scotch. That being said, I loved it! Especially at that price. I will probably also grab the new 12 year cabernet sauvignon finish, as it sounds more like a finished highland scotch.

I tried the MR and wasn't impressed. Rebel 100 is a much better deal. I was told MR was meant to compare against Marker's, so in comparison, I would spend the extra money for the Marker's wheater or Weller's Special Reserve (at MSRP).

Yeah but the 12 year is so much more expensive! As expected, thought. It is 4 times older than the regular McFarlane.

I recently saw McFarlane's at Total Wine (the other day actually) and held off. For those that have had it: Do you think something like an Evan Williams Bottled in Bond would be something close? Or what would you say is close?

MacFarlanes is a horrible wheated whisky, pay $5 more for MM and no doubt take EW for only$20

@@fiver67jb I ended up giving it a go, since I didn't get any replies. The bottle I had was super Earthy and not great. A shame really. I shoulda stuck with some Old Forester 100 instead. Not much of a fan of Maker's myself. Also coulda gone Evan Williams too. Ah well, you live and learn

Every homebrewer has a hydrometer laying around. So if you don't want to buy one, just find a beer nerd. The $20 bourbon space is starting to get crowded. Quite a few great options in that under $25 list.

Not unexpected conclusion, but useful nonetheless. Unfortunately, we only have the WT 6 year rye mash bill here. I don’t like it as much as their wheated stuff. I can’t wait for the 6 year wheated to hit.

I grabbed McFarlane's on a lark and loved it, so glad to see it get some attention. For $20 it's really good, although it's not my favorite, I will keep buying for the price point alone, I don't feel guilty consuming as much of it like I do by $80 Nikka bottle

I like the Wilderness Trail a lot (though we haven't even seen the 6 year wheated here yet), but thought the McFarlane's was surprisingly good for the money. And now I'm curious to try this comparison myself. I also just tried a $99 McFarlane's aged in wine casks, but didn't think it was great for the money. Thanks for the great channel!

I got sold by a cute Total Wine checker who had McFarlane's at the check stand. It was good until the finish, which was nothing. A little bitter on the end, to me. I'll use it to mix drinks or share with non-bourbon nerd friends. At the price point, I'm still going Wild Turkey 101.

I agee the WT all day. I feel like if a 6 yr WT isn't in your budget you should just go back to Tito's, or maybe you are drinking to much 🤣

It makes perfect sense that the WT would give you more complexity and depth than the MR. WT should be a $50 - $60 bourbon rather than $75 in my opinion. There is nothing wrong with it but there are dozens of better options at half the cost than the WT. I will say that I have tried Total Wine’s house brands of scotch and bourbon. They are all pleasant for what they are. If I am at a party or just casually having a dram where I am not thinking about what I am drinking, the Total Wine options are fine. I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy one but wouldn’t turn it down either. As far as “proofing it down”…. Nope, I wouldn’t want to do that. Just my opinion of course. Interesting review. Thanks.
