Finally, someone that talks about my tasting style! I rarely, very rarely, pick up on individual flavors. But when I find something I like, I drink it. I've found that I really prefer wheated whiskeys but not pure wheat.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my father 13 years ago and he's the reason I got started with Scotch. I was never one to start a collection. I just a bottle at a time and sat with her and see if I could pick out the different flavor. However, recently I was introduced to a very good Old Fashioned that got me looking at Bourbon. Thank you for your hard work and great knowledge. Te lo agradezco mucho. El amor nunca a tenido color y no hay una barrera que lo obstruye. Siempre es mejor amar que odiar. Gracias por todo.

Very informative video. I organize a bourbon tasting at our RV rally each year. We end up with around 40-50 bottles and 50+ participants each year. When I welcome everyone and caution them to consume wisely, I use the phrase 'discover your palate' where you use the phrase 'develop your palate'. I think both are applicable to the process and equally important for a bourbon drinker. Incidentally, I also discovered my palate with Knob Creek after a Jim Beam tour. I have since toured and tasted at about 15 distilleries and found many gems with Woodford Double Oak and Angels Envy being favorites. Thanks for the video.

I had younger days filled with Southern Comfort and later Jack Daniels nights. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I first tried Jack Daniels single barrel where that real bourbon appreciation light went off. Since then, I’ve gradually worked my way in. Still love some Jim Beam and Jack. But lately have been loving the Wild Turkey 101! Looking to get Four Roses next. 👍

I get to relive EHT 4Grain every time I mow the lawn. I have an invasive wild strawberry that grows through the back corner of my lawn. When I had my bottle of 4G, I immediately recognized the strawberry flavor, but it was definitely the wild strawberry flavor rather than the sweetness of the strawberries you get at the grocery store. Great concept and great list! I didn't notice any wheated bourbons on the list; might be useful for palate exploration. And if you kept expanding the list, maybe you could also add a whiskey that is very grain-forward ('crafty') as a counterpoint to mature whiskeys like the Elijah Craig 18-year that you suggested.

I’m confused, why are we running out of oak for barrels? Have the cooperages not been planting new oak trees when they cut them down to make a barrel?
@BourbonRealTalk
@BourbonRealTalk 2 жыл бұрын
It has to do with forest management. When an oak forest is mature they block out enough sun that new trees are not able to grow under the canopy. We have a situation where demand is up, which isn't an immediate problem because so many of our oak forests are mature and ready to be harvested. The problem is once harvested, the next generation of trees already needed to be growing, and with so much of our oak forest being mature and stopping new growth we are facing an impending shortage. There is information about it here: www.whiteoakinitiative.org/

Dickel and four roses are like the cilantro of whiskey. With dickel its either vitamins or citrus and chocolate, and with four roses its either fruity and cherry or wrigleys gum. Both good quality, but if you dont like vitamins or spearmint gum in your whiskey youre gonna have a bad time. I get vitamins and spearmint gum sadly. Still good to try both to see where you stand. Good list guys. Cheers.

This is a great and helpful video. Lots of great choices here. Regarding older Bourbons to develop the wood/oaky notes tasting. If you can find them for $45 the Jim Beam 12 year Signature craft. Super woody but not a high proof that will burn your palate. For wheaters I would say Weller’s Special Reserve.

@BourbonRealTalk
@BourbonRealTalk 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. Fun side note. Banana runts flavor is "real" banana flavor, and the bananas we eat today are the imposter. The term "banana republic" was formed when the man who commercialized human consumption of bananas was at risk of losing his modern day equivalent of a billion dollar empire because of a revolution in the area he was getting bananas from. He hired a private army, overthrew the government, and set himself up in control. The bananas he used to start the practice of eating banana was called a Gros Michel. In the 1950's this banana species almost went extinct. At that time the commercial market switched to Cavendish trees. The flavor of banana runts and laughy taffy were created when Gros Michel was the commercial banana, and they taste like the "original" banana. Banana candy taste "fake" to us now because Cavendish bananas taste different and that is what we are all used to eating. If we still ate Gros Michel bananas the candy would not taste "fake" to us.

Great concept and another great video. I wish I could have seen something like this 2 or 3 decades ago. Back then everyone was drinking JD #7 and JB white label which I did not care for. If I would have tried 1792, Elijah Craig, Woodford's Reserve, Buffalo Trace, or most Old Forester products I probably would have started my bourbon journey sooner than I did. Even though I am not a fan of the JD #7 I do agree with it being on the list because it is obviously extremely popular so a lot of people like it. I am a fan of their single barrel products. George Dickel is something I have never seen around here. I am not up to speed on a lot of mash bills so I wonder if any of the ones on your list are high in wheat. If not maybe a Maker's Mark would be good to try. Even though I am not a fan of it a lot of people are and the only way to find out is to try it.

Hey, have you tried "six and twenty 5 grain bourbon"? (from a distillery near Greenville SC) If so, what do you think? A vendor was giving samples at my liquor store on Weds and I really liked it, so I bought a bottle ($42). They claim to be the world's first 5-grain bourbon (they don't list the percentages of their mash, but it is Corn, Soft Red Winter Wheat, Barley, Black Seashore Rye, and Carolina Gold Rice). It had a different combination of flavors from any bourbon I had tried, and I enjoyed it. I also have just switched my budget bourbon from EW 1783 to EW BIB. Not that anyone cares, but I was surprised how much I liked the BIB.

Thanks for putting out these great videos! I am a newbie to the Bourbon fascination and am trying to decide how best to develop my palate and would ask a couple of questions. First, should I start with one distinct Bourbon focusing exclusively on it without mixing in others to confuse me? Second, how many pours (of 1 ounce?) should I try at one tasting when focusing on a single Bourbon?
@BourbonRealTalk

Thank you for your support and feedback! As for your questions, starting with one distinct Bourbon and focusing exclusively on it without mixing in others can definitely help you develop your palate and understand the unique characteristics of that particular Bourbon. In terms of how many pours you should try at one tasting when focusing on a single Bourbon, it really depends on your personal preference and tolerance. Some people prefer to stick to one pour, while others may try up to three or four. It's important to keep in mind that moderation is key and to always drink responsibly. Do you have any other questions or topics you'd like to see covered on Bourbon Real Talk?

@Bourbon Real Talk Thanks so much for that advice! It does make sense to focus one's attention. I can definitely taste the difference between Blanton's and Russell's Reserve 10, with the latter having a little more bite on the finish. Now it's time to really try and discover why. Thanks again for responding!

More sound advice, whether you're just starting to get into Whiskey, or an Intermediate Whiskey drinker or even a full blown Connoisseur who wants to go back and fine tune a bit. I'm green as grass when it comes to Bourbon, I was introduced to Scotch early in my life and have developed my tasting skills there, the good news is that some flavours overlap so you can spend hours going through and enjoying small samples and making notes so you grow in knowledge and then you can share your new found facts with your friends! The Whiskey/Whisky scene is very trendy right now, but this is a drink that you can spend lifetimes pursuing flavours and smells and the good news is you likely know 10-15 close friends that enjoy the drink that would love to form a tasting group with you, right now!! Please take note of this channels philosophy and if you know someone who feels alone, offer some companionship, maybe even over a nice pour of Bourbon and let them know they are loved. I'll never be as eloquent as Randy is but the message is the same. Sending Love from Canada!!

I almost wish Wes had not mentioned KC at all. KC does VERY WELL at high ages. Somehow the oak influence is so well integrated into the overall flavor palate that the oak doesn't stick out as much. KC twelve is so integrated that I barely notice it is a 12 year old. IW Harper 15 is one that the oak sticks out like a sore thumb, and that isn't too expensive and isn't impossible to find in N Texas. Hope that helps.

Whiskey is not affected by exposure to oxygen by itself. It is affected by evaporation of ethanol and dissolved CO2 levels that change PH. Whiskey has a protein in it that reacts with oxygen when hit by UV rays. All of this takes so long, and when it happens it is so subtle that you should not be worried about it. I will have a 2 year long study to answer this question definitively, but I am not done recording the blind taste results. People worry TOO much about open bottles of whiskey. I drank a bottle that was 90% empty and untouched for 30+ years, and it was delightful. Also, high humidity is good and low humidity is bad. Ever taste a 5 year MGP and a 5 year Texas whiskey side by side? One taste young and the other tasted like it was made in the dark ages. The main problem with time is evaporation of ethanol. High humidity combats this problem.

The compound that is irritating is the ethanol, so the lower the proof the easier it will be. You could try an 80 proof like Basil Hayden's, but I suspect it will still be too caustic. Maybe find a cocktail you like?

I developed my palate in wine before I started in whiskey, so the transition was not difficult for me. Developing your palate is a process of building neural pathways from repeated conscious experiences. People are not mindful when the eat and drink things. You have to focus on using your conscious mind while you try things. Then use those experiences to find references while you are drinking whiskey. Also remember that some of it is genetic. At the end of the day just drink what you like.

The second was jack in the cap that looked like a jack in the box theme. This last one was whiskey's that looks like a wendy's theme. The stickers are free to anyone who buys a bottle, and it just makes it fun for the members.
