Great stuff. I’ve been relying on targeting 3rds way too much to outline the harmony on ii Vs, the fact that the 3rd is completely missing from the V might force me to get a different sound in my ears. I think this approach also gets you thinking about rhythm a bit more due to the limited note choices.

Thanks! Yes, rebalancing a choice of fewer notes with rhythm is a great tactic. Best wishes. Joel.

Something about the simplicity of this approach has really helped to relax me and unlock my playing. Thank you so much. I'll definitely be checking out more of your videos. I really enjoyed playing tonight and using some of your instruction. Thanks again.

Great stuff! What happens when the V7 has been tritone substituted (with I#7) for chromatic root movement? Would the iim4 itself have to be substituted for, say, the “v#m4”?

Thanks! You can play the minor group starting on the 5th of any dominant chord. So if it was Dm7 Db7#11 Cmaj7, it suggest trying Dm4 Abm4 Em4 groups. Little bit trickier, but sounds great. Best wishes. Joel.

Joel. What is your last name? Where can I hear more of your playing? I love your tenor sound. Do you do private instruction? I’m really in need of some feedback and guidance about sound production.

Joel, you have a great tenor sound. Really rich and focused. On minor 2-5-1, how about suggesting adding in the leading note as a fifth option over the dominant seven flat nine? Boosts the clarity even more for not much more effort. Something to suggest for more advanced players? What do you think?
@JoelPurnell Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Sure, if you want to take it up a level to create a differential between the 2 & 5, try adding the b7 on the 2 chord, and the 3 to the 5 chord. Works on both major & minor 2-5s. Hope you’re well. Joel. 👍🏼

The minor 7th followed by the 7 chord a 4th up is a signal that you're in a ii-V or a ii-V-I. You memorize them and they start to stick out.
