Standard putter grips weight ca 50 grams. Mid and jumbo grips not only increase size of the grip but also increase weight. How many golfers dont know that it mayt be the counter weighting that improves feel, rather than simply the size of the grip. Botticelli grips are available in variable weights.

just took my (cheapo) second choice putter and tried it out, saw enough for me to invest further. so into the bag and out comes the odyssey 2 ball srt, the drill, taps and r7 limited (max 20g) weight. drilled the hole SLIGHTLY larger, tapped (threaded) it to m5, and screwed the weight in with the TM tool. i'm 50% at 14 feet to a FOUR inch target, and the 3 that missed hit the rim. now all i need is you to tell me how to read breaks correctly, and i'm in business. I always head to the putter section in most golf shops. test numerous putters and such. Two years ago I grabbed an Oddessy #7 mallet with the stroke lab shaft. I was making everything. I spoke with the salesman, looked it up on the internet and needless to say it came home with me. Life changing for my game, was hovering around a 8 hdcp playing to a solid 4-5 now with confidence comes more made putts. Prior to that I had a Monte Carlo mallet with a super stroke grip that had interchangable weights in it, that is what got me thinking.

I made 2 changes to improve my putting. I lengthened the shaft almost 2 inches (I have short arms) and added a bit of lead tape till I could really feel the club head. Same idea as you. The longer putter added swing weight automatically and most importantly took a lot of pressure off of my lower back so I could practice more.

I'm a believer as well. I think I started backweighting 15-20 years ago using the Balance Certified weights, but now I just use inexpensive lead weights under the grip. I was struggling a bit last year until I realized my new putter grip was quite a bit lighter than my previous one so I needed to get a heavier backweight.
@GregPace Жыл бұрын
Quick question for you, I just switched from a putter to a heavier head putter and want to get the same balance point feel. Thinking about adding lead tape on the grip side to get the swing weight to match my older putter, how did you go about adding your tape to the grip? Did you just do a long strip on the back side of the putter where the grip would go, then add grip tape and install grip on top or did you just put right below the weight where it is exposed (trying to avoid this). Can't seem to find any examples of this online. I also am installing a BGT stability shaft in this so I'm not sure I can order the butt end weights to fit the carbon end.

I kind of rolled my eyes at these newfangled putter shafts... Until I spent some time with the Odyssey Stroke Lab shaft. Everyone talks about the stiffness and torque but not many talk about the weight distribution. The back weighting and reduction in weight with the graphite means your putter is a "normal" overall weight but the swing weight is actually closer to an old school putter. Feels fantastic.

Sorry for the essay ahead of time. BUT, FWIW, you’re my new fav golf channel on KZbin. Just subbed 🫡😎… So, I gamed a 2019 Stroke Lab 7s for 4 years, switching over from my 2000 Odyssey White Hot #2 blade. Way better than the original WH. Especially the 2019 microhinge insert. The best insert Odyssey has ever made IMO. However, I was able to try some of the TaylorMade putters from the 2022 Spider GT family and they absolutely floored me. ALL 4 head shapes are FANTASTIC (each available face balanced or w a short slant hosel). Basically I wound up buying the Spider GT Rollback #3 (21 deg of toe hang) and it’s changed my putting. Most of the TM putters with their higher end multi-material heads make the entire range of Odyssey putters look like cheap cast amateur hour. I gamed Odyssey’s for 23 yrs so I feel like I’m qualified to give my 2¢. The Spider GT Rollback is a standard half moon mallet (very Rossie-esque) but has some remarkable features that Odyssey’s and others don’t. Firstly, I hated the Stroke Lab shaft. IMO the “scientific tech” sounds nice on paper but doesn’t perform any better than any other quality stainless shaft. They basically took all the weight out of the middle and made a counterbalanced putter. Weight is your friend w the flat stick, and I just don’t dig it. YMMV. So going back to a step-less, fluted, stainless steel shaft on my TaylorMade (I think KBS makes them) immediately felt better. The real magic in the GT Rollback is the 90 gram tungsten roll bar that wraps around the entire back and rear sides of the mallet head. Crazy high stability and MOI as a result. The head is made of a combo of 6061 aircraft grade aluminum, 304SS, and tungsten (nice machine milling). And the highlight is their new PureRoll2 insert. They use the 6061 as bars cut at a 45 deg angle which rolls the ball to near perfection. I grew to hate the white hot insert over time because it was too soft and had a noticeable sweet spot. The PureRoll2 insert is much more firm, yet still soft and forgiving. It’s funny bc prior to the Spider GT lineup, none of the TM putters appealed to me (Spider X family, etc). Even the 2023 Spider GTx doesn’t excite me and feel the way the 2022 Spider GT family of putters do. I’ve heard the Notchback is phenomenal with even more perimeter tungsten weighting (190 g), and the reg Spider GT seems to be a gem. That’s my next pickup. Their Splitback (fang mallet) looks great too. However much I love the look of the fang putters, I feel like they’re less stable than other mallets due to the removal of weight in the rear. I highly urge anyone to check them out. (PS - I’m also very interested in the Cobra 2021 Vintage lineup. W the materials, SIK face inserts, etc, they look like a helluva deal at their new price of $149 down from $300+. The Torino and Stingray mallets in particular have caught my eye. So have the Mizuno M-Craft mallets. I’d love to add an insert-less, milled putter to the arsenal. WHY? BC too many ppl focus on the wrong end of the bag. Putters and wedges are >>> than drivers/woods/hybrids. Improve your short game and improve your score.) - Pete

I guess my point is I’ve had the opposite results. I personally don’t dig the SL shafts and that counterbalanced feel. Going from the Stroke Lab 7s to the TaylorMade Spider GT Rollback w the stainless shaft has elevated my putting… PARTICULARLY making putts from 7ft and in. But there’s no “right or wrong” when it comes to gear. If it helps you play better, game it. End of 👊🏼😎

A bit off topic or possibly a future conversation / content. I play a well-used set of Muira 001 blades with Nippon shafts I bought used three years ago, and i love them. With that said, they are a bit beat up, especially on the leading edge from stones, cart paths, and bag dings ( nothing on the groves ). I can't afford to buy new clubs from any manufacturer, let alone Muira. QUESTION/s: Is it worth getting clubs reconditioned? Will it change any noticeable characteristics? Have you ever had it done or know anyone that has, and what are your thoughts? Love your content and live shows, thanks, and happy holidays!!!

There used to be a few companies that reconditioned irons, one being the iron factory. They do/did great work so I am told. I dont have an idea of the cost. Interesting. What if one were to put weighted extensions off the top of the shaft, like the pole a tight rope walker would use? I know it sounds preposterous and may even look funny, but that definitely balances them out as they try and maintain a straight line. You love to tinker so there's an out of the box idea for you to noodle on.
@McGolf Жыл бұрын
The extension is a neat idea. As long as the extension doe not touch you while putting I can’t think of a rule that would make it illegal. There is a weight that super stroke and balance certified have/had that was a longer model and in some could be adjusted to a length to give the putter a different feel without stick out the back.

Good stuff. On another matter, I've never been fitted for clubs. At 6'1 with hands falling between knees and waist like most people and not being short or long armed, will I likely be fitted for standard length clubs? My dad was a club pro in late 60s to early 80s. His Palmer Originals custom made 1" over standard were handed down to me as he told me that's the length I need. I hit behind the ball to often and it's time to give up those old blades and go game improvement irons. I'm a 15 handicapper with those 50 yr old irons. They were reconditioned many years ago, but its way past time to move on....
@McGolf Жыл бұрын
Clay, I'd say I would agree on your assessment. 6'1" is becoming common place nowadays and with standard length arms it will really depend on your swing plane if flatter a bit longer wont hurt however if upright then shorter may be called for in length

Jim, you intentionally used the phase, "get the weight underneath the hands." It's my understanding that you are counter balancing the top of the putter shaft. What do you mean when you use the word "underneath"? In my mind, with the counter weight at the top of the shaft, it would put the weight above your hands and not underneath or below your hands. Of course I'm being very literal. Do you mean get the weight in our hands? Any additional insite you can share with me on this is greatly appreciated. And thank you! Another great video. You've become a fantastic source of golf information and anyone that's serious about their golf game can benefit from most of the content you share.

it depends on where you grip the putter for under the hands. if the back hand is at the top of the grip then by definition it is under the hands or hand. I say hands because there are longer models that place the weight further into the shaft of the club.

I have a GoLo 6 Scotty putter and would like to try counterbalancing it. According to a video I saw from Scotty himself, he said most players preferred 50 grams in the butt and 50 in the head. How would I go about trying this out? Could I simply put a 17 in. flatso 3.0 on a 38 in shaft, much like the Ricky/Wyndham movement, then add certain weights to the head? Or would I need a counterbalance weight as well in the butt?
@McGolf Жыл бұрын
if the scotty is standard it is porbably 35 inches long. You have to extend or reshaft the putter. then install the bigger grip. Scotty probably makes the putter head heavier for them. This is assuming the golo does not have weight to change. for your model lead tape will be required.
