Fantastic breakdown, thank you. Have you found that each of your children connect with these readers or have you had to bring in different programs?

So far seven of my nine kids all have taken to them, love them and all have excelled in language arts because of them

@@deputietribe awesome! We have tried about 5 different phonics programs in the last 13 months plus now bringing in the additional grammar elements, good grief. It’s just too much stimulation with all these modern programs, it’s no wonder my reader is struggling. Really looking forward to trying something simple, streamlined, cohesive, and timeless 🙏🏻

Agreed. I get overwhelmed as well. If you want something absolutely complete and McGuffey based, You can also check out eclectic foundations. They use the other (newer) set of McGuffey readers, Harvey’s grammar and implement hand writing and other elements to make a complete language arts program. I prefer the older, original set of mcguffeys but I LOVE how eclectic foundations took all the one room school house tried and true books and made cohesive workbooks for them. You can search for my video comparing the two mcguffeys. I also may have a video walking through the eclectic foundations books.

Homeschooling with McGuffey, honesteading, dreadlocks, and Jesus--a girl after my own heart! Well, my hair is pretty silky so dreads just fell out for me. 😉

Did you ever make a video on using the McGuffey readers that you mentioned at the end? I am interested in how the person you mentioned combined the Harvey’s grammar and Mac Guffey.

Yes! But apparently I never published it!! Here is the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnKUhqekn8yefck. Thanks for reaching out!

Did you use the reading lesson to teach reading before beginning the McGuffey pictorial primer and the lesson book?

Yes I used The Reading Lesson to teach reading prior to McGuffey

In your opinion which McGuffey reader is more advanced, The Original Eclectic McGuffey second reader or The Revised eclectic McGuffey third reader? Which one should my children do first?
@deputietribe3 жыл бұрын
I just paged through them both and they look like they’re about the same reading level. I always prefer the eclectic since they seem to have more depth to their stories

Hello, thanks for sharing your experiences with the McGuffeys! Can you use the Eclectic Foundation’s LA with the original sets or is this only used with the revised sets? Thanks again!!
@deputietribe2 жыл бұрын
Eclectic foundations is only with the revised sets unfortunately. But you could pair the two! So eclectic foundations two days a week and then the original mcguffeys the other two days. I have a several videos on how we use the original mcguffeys without any curriculum

@@deputietribe another question… do you begin the McGuffeys before or after your children are reading? We also are using The Reading Lesson and I wondered if I should continue with those lessons and then begin McGuffeys once my child has started reading.

We also use the reading lesson to teach reading. It’s much more content than using mcguffeys Teach Your Kids How to Read kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZi9dql6p8mXitE

Thank you for this review! I’m brand new to homeschool and am interested in the book series! Would the revised version work or is the original best? Also, have you continued this approach since making this video? How is it working for your family? Thank you for your thoughts!

We love and use the mcguffeys regularly! We prefer the originals not the revised. Welcome to homeschooling!! I would love to help you with anything you need help with. You can email me (mrsdeputie@protonmail.com) or find me on Facebook too.

Peace, Thank you for posting video on the original Mcguffey Readers. I have a question. My oldest is 7 years old and struggling with reading but I don't think she need to start on the primers should I start her on the first reader.
@deputietribe3 жыл бұрын
I would suggest looking at the Revised Eclectic Readers instead of the originals. They have a much better bridge for the struggling reader. The original McGuffeys jump pretty fast into more advanced reading. I hope this helps!
@deputietribe3 жыл бұрын
One other thing, make sure you’re teaching your child PHONICS and not SIGHT WORDS. This means they are learning the sound of letters and sounding words out, not memorizing them because of how they look. A lot of struggling readers just need a little more training in phonics. We use “The Reading Lesson” to teach phonics. You can find that on Amazon. All 6 of my 8 readers have used/are using this.

Ok i just watched your awesome part 2 of language arts and just seeing this. This is exactly what we are doing now and it has been great but did progressively get challenging. Are you continuing to do this along with the eclectic language arts program you mentioned in part 2 video?
@deputietribe3 жыл бұрын
Yes we often flop between the two. It depends on how we’re feeling and what the day looks like. I really appreciate all that the eclectic foundation includes (spelling, grammar, speech, handwriting), but I love the challenge and freedom just the McGuffey alone gives us. We also take a break from both and focus on certain pieces of literature we may be reading. Currently, we finished Harriet Tubman’s biography and just note booked about all we learned. Switching things up all the time makes school and learning fun and fresh every day. It also causes your kids to be very well rounded in their communication skills. Hope this helps!

I am watching your videos again as I read through my books and deciding how to proceed. I am curious on the dictation and listening skills. What do you do if you read the selection but your child didn't listen and wants you to repeat?
@deputietribe3 жыл бұрын
Try a smaller section. It’s all about character. They need the skill of disciplining their mind and body to pay attention. As you would train them in any character skill, start small and work your way up to larger sections and longer times listening.
