I would love to try out the commonplace pages! Changing our homeschool to less stuff and I’d love to try notebooking! I love your Mcguffeys lesson books and grammar. Haven’t tried your reading program tho. I have a six year old boy who’s just not into learning currently ha! Plus three other kiddos. Thank you Sherry!! You are an encouragement to me❤️

Thank you so much for this work you put together. All I needed was this tutorial. I am using this for my 5 year old daughter along with your lesson book. It is amazing and exciting to see my little doing one line of dictation. I started using 100 easy lessons after she learned all her letter sounds. We are doing 1 lesson per week and she is on lesson 5. My grade 2 is on the second reader using the the level 2 lesson book. We love it. You so right she drew a pic out of IS. 🥰My son goes to school and does this on the side.

Delightful and timely. The McGuffey Primer was the Second Revised Ed. That was shown with the Mme. Alex Doll named Ana, same as one of our great-grandmothers. McGuffey had the illustration of a character called Ana. My mother learned from these books. The Madame Alexander Doll Company made series of dolls called "McGuffey Ana" that sometimes included an accessory of a tiny replica of a McGuffey reader. Mme Alexander created dolls to honor important fictional characters for little girls. My mother is now deceased, she would be quite elderly! She learned to read and write and speak English with these readers. She loved the Mme. Alexander doll. I would like to recreate the experience for my own grandchildren to honor the historic memory. Thanks.

@@MomDelights May I ask some specific advice? My daughter is 7 years old but she just finished Black Beauty for her fun read and she thinks the 2nd Revised reader is too easy, I was wondering where to place her or what to do for her for her language arts. I have both the Original and Revised readers and the parent guides by Ruth Beechick and Betty Burger. I'm just not sure how to come up with a S.O.P. that we could follow that would challenge her and be age appropriate.

I would go so far as to say that in those first lessons (for a kinder or 1st grade student) dictation could be just letters. You don’t even have to expect them to write whole words from memory at all. Really depends on the child. But I would say it’s completely normal for a 6 year old to be reading better than they can write and spell.

I have eight children and one of mine could spell much better than he could read; seems completely backwards. He was able to encode piece by piece as he understood phonics well, but separating a word into those phonetic constructs was harder for him. I had one that was reading very well at 2 and he also could spell any word by six. I had one whom was vaccine injured and was almost ten before she could read or write well; she has now graduated and killed her standardized testing...she worked very hard and was a motivated child. Most of our children read well before they write well, so we have done a similar pattern as is taught here after the children read and they enjoyed learning to write in such a simple way. Every kiddo is different, but there does seem to be a commonality in progression.

Do you think the lesson book would be too much for a 4.5 year old? He’s reading in alpha phonics right now and once we are done we are shifting over to McGuffeys, so he will probably be 5 by that time…

It depends, but the fine motor skills for writing aren't typically developed enough at that age, and pressing could lead to burn out later on.
