I watched these as a kid, nearly 50 years later the jokes are still funny, and gags still work. Even more amazing though the eyes of a kid, and now the eyes of a retiree, it is still top entertainment. Not much on current TV will last the time and appeal to all ages.

I can binge on PT 73. I saw a great documentary the other day on Pt boats. The crews spent MORE on their boats than on land. They were so stretched on supplies - they DID drag their clothes behind their boats! They made torpedo juice "on board" and at least one of the crew acted as cook.
@AndrewGivens2 жыл бұрын
I think, at the start, the Navy had probably not provided enough tenders for them. The S-boats were built in tandem with dedicated tenders from the outset, and went everywhere with them, defending their mothership when they had to. Seems the USN just let the PTs use mossie-ridden jungle islands instead. Rough.

Not really. Sitcoms are about 22 minutes and change. So it's not really that much different. What's different is the hourlong game shows like The Price is Right. Those used to be 52 minutes or so. Now they're 39 minutes...sometimes 37.

@AndrewGivens2 жыл бұрын
Aww, the shot of McHale you can see the boat's not at full speed... look at the wake. It's gentle, not a great ploughed tear in the sea with white plumes. The two shots are not contradictory, given there's an edit between them (passage of time). But that said, there is a lot of silliness and nonsensicality in this; not too much for fun though. I am surprised, just finding this now, that Bilko (which I love) was endlessly re-run over here (UK) but this never was.

Ernest Borgnine recalls when the series was in the planning stages they asked for and got a technical advisor from the USN. When he saw the script, he said "this isn't the Navy!" No, replied the producer, it's "McHale's Navy." The advisor stormed out, "don't call us, we'll call you!" On the last year of the show, Ernest got an invitation to join the Secretary of the Navy for lunch. When he asked, the Secretary explained USN recruitment soared because of McHale's Navy.

McHale's navy, Hogan's heroes, F troop, Beverley Hillbillies, Petticoat junction, I dream of genie,...talk about lucky - so funny, as a kid you may not have picked up on the innuendo but you certainly figured it out from the que's of your elders...it was entertainment, a lighthearted look at some tremendous worldwide issues of a generation back. McHale and his crew talking about going to "brizbane' or MELbourne made it seem a little real (living in Brisbane).. Ww2 stories as told by family and friends, as it was in the 1970's seemed to me to be so ordinary, so common, so casual in comment that you forget that that they are true...that man or woman was there..but they laughed, and drank, they were happy to talk and sad to remember....

For those who don't know or never herd of this word before. SNAFU is an acronym. "situation normal, all f***ed up." Also, Privet Snafu, is an old classic military training cartoon(s) designed to teach the solder/sailor, of the time, what it is and how NOT to be a f**k up. Basically a f**k-up prevention film. Very popular during it's time, especially during WWII. Search Privet Snafu and enjoy some of the films your grandad, father or perhaps even your mother and grand-mother used to watch. And Yes, there were females in the military back then. lol Sadly, I scarcely doubt there are WWII vets around today. But lets thank them anyways for their service and sacrifice. RIP and thank you Ladies and Gentlemen of the WWII US Armed Forces and the military of our true Allies. Your children and grandchildren and fellow Americans and allies of foreign countries will never forget you.

This style of toned-down screwball humour, performed with such gusto, still lands. The secret is; the ingredients have to be best quality and you have to follow the recipe. It's a bit of a perfect storm really. Compares very well with the non-combat 'Phil Silvers Show'.

Hubert Scott-Paine, a British aircraft and boat designer, designed and built hard chine motor torpedo boats. American Electric Launch Company (Elco) agreed to purchase a 70 foot British Power Boat which became the template for similar boats to be built under licence. The vessel was taken to Elco’s facilities an so this is written to scotch any comments that the PT boat originated in the U.S.A. Please check and do proper research before putting any fingers to a keyboard. 'nuf sed
