Can someone please explain to me what a preamp does. I understand what an integrated amp is, effectively your entire system such as your phono, CD, and streamer can run through it. I understand what a power amp is, it can enhance and beef up the sound of say a CD player when connected. But I am at a loss as to what a preamp does. Thanks in advance.

A Pre amp only handles the source components eg Cd,Streamer,etc.It has no connection for the speakers like an inte grated amp does which is a Pre and Power amp in one box.It takes whichever source is selected and outputs it to a set of rca or balanced connections so that it can be connected to a separate power amp which the speakers would connect to.

An integrated amp is a preamp and power amp combined into one unit. A power amplifier just drives your speakers with a signal it gets from the preamp, the preamp does everything else.

good preamp but if you can afford it, get the C1100... bar none, the best Pre-Amp McIntosh makes, and probably better than 99% of other brands flag ship pre's..
