The £535 thing is real, but is probably from the 1940s.

@@paulmurrell1301the spending power of the pound from 1950 would be over £20 today, so the £535 house back then would be over £10,000 in today’s money. Unfortunately, that isn’t taking into account the housing price boom, so the same house now, likely to cost 500,000 or more.

£535 in London in the 1940's is most probably correct but in modern times a family house in the London suburbs will cost somewhere around £600.000+ A point to make on both the London Tube and Concorde is the fact that per mile of travel when Concorde was flying it was actually cheaper to fly Concorde per mile to the USA than it was to travel the London Tube. At least on Concorde you were guaranteed a seat and a Champaign dinner. Also on the London tube if you chat to passengers on the train you are met with Stern looks and disapproval but the only time you are excused is if you need to ask directions then the locals are very helpful

The thing is that the places that are now high-class London suburbs were in the middle of nowhere back then, so it's not just inflation. The irony is that it was the tube that actually caused that.
@rohan1970b
@rohan1970b 9 ай бұрын
Absolutely correct. However, general inflation would mean £535 would be worth £43,123. The rest is just the increase in housing prices specifically.

Good Reaction,as always though you know how to pronounce London's mighty River Thames, and yet when it came to Thameslink, you pronounced The "Thames" part totally differently:) The Underground has been fantastic all thru' my London life and I think the last time I waited 10 minutes for a Tube was in the 1980s 😀

You should look at this video :- Metroland with John Betjeman. It is about the expansion of the Tube lines and the housing developments that went it in the early 1900;s.

I grew up in the far north west of the underground map on the metropolitan line (purple). I used it to get to school, visit friends and socialise. Most importantly to get into town for pubs and clubs. Always a dodgy cab home 😉

04:45 XD FYI One of our comedy panel shows (on the radio) had a bit called 'Mornington Crescent', which amounted to a vague resemblance of a board game with a racing theme on London's public transport network. 05:10 In terms of inflation, it's more like £362.20

Saying that 5 guineas is £5.25 in today's money is simply converting pre decimal currency into decimal and not adjusting for inflation. A guinea was 21 shillings, or £1 plus one shilling, so equivalent to £1.05 in decimal format

Harry Beck was played by Jago Hazzard. The comment he made when he got fired was a nice giveaway as Jago never appears in his videos. He makes videos about london underground. The "you are.... to my......" is his classic catch phrase. Also the paris metro official was played by Tim Burton, the tim traveller.

Jay's wrong that Harry Beck was only paid £5.25 in "today's" money. He was paid between 5 and 10 guineas. At the time, a guinea was no longer an official denomination but was used as shorthand for one pound and one shilling. So he was paid a minimum of five pounds and five shillings in 1930s money, which is worth around £340 today. Still a paltry sum, but much more than £5.25!

Mornington crescent is a game on a BBC Radio 4 show called " I'm sorry I haven't a clue " it's been going for decades ( from the 60s i think)and it's a panel game show with bits like "one song to the tune of another "and Mornington crescent where you say names of train stops that get you to Mornington crescent, then the Radio studio audience cheers. Its like the radio equivalent of who's line is it anyway?

Don’t forget the fee was pre-decimalization when there were 240 pence to the pound, not 100. One Guinea (one pound, one shilling) in 1933 is worth £88 today. So the £535 house is equivalent to £45k. The problem is that house prices have increased faster than inflation due to faster population growth, lack of new housing and low-interest rates.

@@highpath4776 it would likely be more effective at it's intended purpose if they made an entirely different map next to the tube map outlining walking paths of various traffic and density, that would also make adding geographical areas more pertinent as the map takes place on the surface, not the underground. But hey, perhaps that's too expensive.

About the map it’s got be that messy, TFLs system has doubled in size in the last 20 years to match London’s growth, there’s a joke about London “ no one knows where it stops “ Regards. JH
