For anyone young and ignorant enough to think the Beatles are over-rated, there is an excellent documentary (which you can find on KZbin) by Howard Goodall - the TV and Film composer. Excuse me I'm 68 and yes the beatles were over raited Come Together Based on Chuck Berry's 1956 hit "You Can't Catch Me", Lennon's song was slowed down and given a "swampy" bass line by McCartney. The lyrics were also altered slightly, with "Here come old flat-top/He come groovin' up slowly" replacing Berry's "Here come a flat-top/He was movin' up with me". Lennon was sued by Berry's publisher, Morris Levy, in 1973, but the case was settled out of court. Lennon agreed to cover three of Levy's songs, including a version of "You Can't Catch Me". Feel Fine Similar to Bobby Parker's 1961 song "Watch Your Step". Lennon also based the guitar riff for "Day Tripper" on "Watch Your Step.

Elton John's song "Candle in the Wind" was originally written to honor Marilyn Monroe, but was later re-written and re-recorded to pay tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales: Marilyn Monroe The song was originally written in 1973 to honor Monroe's life and how it reflected society's treatment of its idols. Diana, Princess of Wales In 1997, John and Bernie Taupin re-wrote the song as a tribute to Diana, who had died earlier that year. The song was performed at Diana's funeral, and the proceeds from the song went to her charities. The song's title was changed to "Candle in the Wind 1997", and the opening lyrics were changed from "Goodbye Norma Jeane" to "Goodbye England's rose".

The funny thing about The Beatles is you could do a top 10 or even top 20 of their best songs and none of them could be singles. Many of their most ground-breaking songs are from albums, not to say the singles aren't impressive but just concentrating on them really doesn't show the diversity of the Beatles catalogue.

Love how the top three comments are related to The Beatles. Let me build on that pile xD Because, to me, saying "I find the The Beatles to be overrated" is such a weird statement. We live in a world The Beatles built. The image pop acts have, the idealization of pop acts that write their own songs, clear group dynamics, musical acts adjusting their style during their careers. All those things weren't really a "thing" musicians did. Nothing the Beatles did was unique to them, but the sum of it all means that you just gotta respect them so much. Anyway, I'm also not surprised you don't know about e.g. Perfect Day, which, as a British charity single, was always unlikely to "cross over" into any other music market. The Brits love their frequent charity things, including musical projects. There are a few Comic Relief charity singles that also sold well, and those are either joke songs, or songs covered by UK comedians. Nobody outside of the UK buys them.

As for the bulk of that top 40, I'm ashamed, but also a bit proud, of the list. Several of those best sellers were fundraisers for various calamities that were happening and that's good to know that we British were sufficiently generous to buy enough records to make it into a list like this. Others (Elton in top spot) were pure sentimentality, and that's okay, we're empathetic. So many were dross though. Oh and about #16 (7:03)! Read the lyrics to Barbie Girl. You'll see that Mattel was FURIOUS about that song. It's, and I hope this frankness in the comments has no impact on this video's performance, comparable to stuff like The Vagina Monologues. It's about how Barbie is a s€Xualized commodity, and the clean Scandinavian bubblegum pop production fits that perfectly. It's not a song you necessarily wanna listen to a lot, but it's super legit as a composition and in terms of theme, and I don't get folks who are legitimately INTO music and cannot RESPECT that song's high quality. (in general, in terms of critique, I'm always big on having the two axes of good and bad quality & personal enjoyment and dislike; it's perfectly fine to not like a song, e.g. Uptown Funk, a song I love, for the record, though one can always, if you know how to TALK about music, be honest about a song's qualities; I'm an amateur, most of my love for music comes from looking at lyrics and feeling out if I like the melody and sound of it through more vibes-based stuff, but yeah, sorry for rambling)

I think some of their stuff has quite a slow beat, which is very much not how popular songs have been for the past 40 or so years, so it may be a generational thing. I came just a couple of years late to be much of a fan as I was still a very young infant when they reached their peak; though I think they did play a major part in enabling so much else by transforming the audiences. Mull of Kintyre at #4 surprises me a little, though I was 13 the year it came out and remember it having the No. 1 spot for something like 11 weeks - I actually think it had something to do with the bagpipes! But it sounds very dated, now. It's a pity the clips were so short, but a nice light subject for the weekend, so well done you!

Music tastes are some of the most subjective things we have. It is never wrong or bad to say you do not like some song. And there is also no problem in saying, 10 years later, the opposite thing about a song. We are not static things. Though i would say that using the word "hate" for a song is more akin of a psychological trauma than taste. On the other hand i kind of understand the feeling for those dumb songs. They were so everywhere, it was brain washing. I would also note that saying a band is overated is less in the domain of taste, and i would assume that you have some more profund knowledge about music and that band. Do you?

Imagine. The one song above all others that don't just merely hate, but I loathe, detest, and despise. Have done ever since I first heard it. Reinforced beyond all doubt after watching a version of it from A Perfect Circle. That song you were singing (Stand by You) is from Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders. Great song.

Need to go back further in time for me! Just kidding, as I was a kid at the time of the Beatles early songs and they influenced me, until Led Zeppelin did. Some great songs there. Whitney, as you say, fantastic voice, such a loss.

The Beatles are overrated, really?. Do you mean overrated in the same way as Mozart, Shakespeare, Bach, Picasso?
@johnpowell54333 күн бұрын
I prefer Shakespeare's music to Picasso's.

Every Breath You Take and I'll Stand By You are two different songs, and neither of those are the Bryan Adams song 😂

These songs aren't all British. I think these songs are the ones from around the world that did well in the British charts. Gotye is not British for starters, he's a Belgian born Australian.

WHERE IS MR BRIGHTSIDE!!!!!??? :o I was counting on it being top 3 ;)
@AlexByth2 күн бұрын
This is one reason I'm assuming it DOESN'T count streams, just actual paid-for physical discs (and the odd cassette) and downloads. I'm pretty sure Mr Brightside would be in there if streaming was included.
