Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I can tell you for a fact that they do. I get that comment all the time. I don't mean to frustrate you, but I just can't pick up every rock. I've thought about doing a livestream from a beach, but many beaches I go to don't have cell service and I don't think I'd get very far with everyone wanting me to pick up different rocks. I need to put more thought into where I could do that and how I could possibly keep up with all the comments.

That's a nice memory of your dad. Honestly, I didn't even look at the camping area, I spent all my time on the beach. I think Clovis said that the campground had been moved because the high water washed out the old one. I might have that slightly wrong, but it was something like that.

I found an Amethyst agate about 4 inches long many years ago. This was near the time they would be closing McLain for the winter. It was near dark and storming when we pulled into the park for our last camping session of the year. We had to put a tarp up to stop the strong winds in order to get the tent up. But the next morning, after coffee of course, I strayed to water's edge and was kind of shocked to see this just waiting for me to pick up! One never knows what the waves will wash in.

Sam the Tumbling King! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 And I laughed at “Urbanite” - at one of my favorite rockhounding spots I find what I call “Brickia”: chunks of water-worn red brick hiding amongst my favorite conglomerates 😂 (btw if you’ve never tried tumbling a conglomerate before, give it a shot! I’ve gotten some beautiful results with them, just don’t put them in with fancy rocks in case a pebble breaks free along the way; usually I cut/grind them on the saw into tumbler sized chunks and they stay together pretty well!)

@WarszawaScream
@WarszawaScream 5 күн бұрын
@@MichiganRocks I’m not certain what type of conglomerates I find here, they *look* like red brick with a lot of microcrystalline quartz pebbles embedded in them, but that red matrix seems to be some kind of chert/jasper so they tumble SUPER well as long as the inclusions stay put! I’m going to post some on RTH once I finish a few pieces I’m working on with it; one of these days I gotta poke a local geologist or the geology subreddit to find out exactly what it is!

McLain is our preferred campground on the Keweenaw! mostly because it was our first experience with Lake Superior rocks! was the beach in better shape since 2023? so much sand and shoreline was lost south of the campground in the winter of 2022 and 2023.

can you show us the tumbled stone and rocks please, the ones you pick up in video?
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 2 күн бұрын
I sure can, but it will be a long time from now. Rock tumbling takes me months. I also like to get them all done before I make a video because I take before and after pictures and it's easier to keep them straight if I do them all at once. I just got the last of last summer's rocks polished, so now I need to find time to spend several hours in the basement trying to take pictures in the same position as I photographed them when I started them.

So many rocks, like 1:31 look like they are covered in a ‘purple coralline’ type of coating. Any ideas?

They're not covered by anything. That color goes all the way though.

I doubt it, but you have more experience doing it, and I have no valid explanation for what I’m saying; just a question/observation. To that end, are you saying the dark outer ‘shell’ (don’t know the appropriate word, just using my best analogy) of it goes from one side to the other if you cut in half? With the rock in your hand at 1:31 I’d call BS
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 4 күн бұрын
@@given0fox968 I left that one on the beach, so I can't cut it to verify one way or the other. I just know from experience in cutting a lot of rocks that they usually look the same on the inside as the outside. There is something called a weathering rind on rocks though, where the outside can be a slightly different color due to oxidation, fading, iron staining, etc. It's not usually too dramatic, but it's noticeable.
@given0fox968
@given0fox968 4 күн бұрын
@@MichiganRocks based on the surrounding rocks, and the one I mentioned in your hand, I saw a similar ‘hue’ in what I feared was some sort of ‘staining’ in that rock and the surrounding. If (which sounds like I’m not) something was staining them, we’d both be concerned. Appreciate the responses, and you sharing your adventures & finds.
