- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

This is the cabbing machine I use:

- THE ROCK SHED -
I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

I also have an Amazon storefront. This is where you can find other products you may have seen in my videos. As an Amazon Influencer, I earn from qualifying purchases. It doesn't cost you extra.

I happened upon a KZbin video from "Currently Rockhounding" ... in this particular video, he was explaining about agates and jasper. I didn't have time for the whole video, but I did learn what makes an agate. While a rock is being formed, a hole happens from perhaps water, or even gas. The water is full of silica .. and that is when an agate is formed. I thought you might enjoy knowing that factoid and where I found it.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 29 күн бұрын
Apparently the way they're formed is a hotly debated topic between geologists. I'm not sure if they argue about it at the level Jared explained it or if it's the details that are not agreed upon.
@maryseaman312
@maryseaman312 29 күн бұрын
@@MichiganRocks well, since geologists are more sold on the age of rocks than they are knowledgeable about how they are formed ... I think Jared very ably explained the minerals involved - - in my experience with geologists (very limited experience) they tend to be more expert on certain areas than they are in general - - sometimes, even I can figure out that the "specialization" of the scientists have removed many from other aspects of reality. I could say they are narrow-minded in many ways, but that would start an entirely different aspect of the elephant. LOL.

@sssssssss4258 Watch Rob's videos on rock tumbling. They are terrific for beginners and pros. He's always doing something different and fun. Keep in mind that basic rotary rock tumblers take a LOT of time. The first stage can take a week, weeks or months to get the rocks smooth. Patience is key. But rotary tumblers are great for the first stage. Most pros consider vibratory rock tumblers necessary for stage 2 through 4 because it cuts the polish time significantly. Don't believe the rotary tumbler guidelines of a week for each step. You're almost guaranteed to be disappointed. I order virtually all my grit through the Rock Shed. And a terrific rock to buy there is Mexican Lace agate. One of the prettiest agates anywhere.

@@maryseaman312 When I started making videos, my goal was to educate people on which rocks to pick up on the beach and how to tumble them. I never thought I'd be helping people who either couldn't get out on the beach because of health or people who had moved away from Michigan and could no longer get to the beach because of being so far away. The people who actually watch my videos are not necessarily the same as my target audience. It is a really great feeling to be able to give a little taste of the beach to those who can't get there for one reason or another.

This spot is a day's drive from my house. But I do have good rocks near me too. I am extremely fortunate to have places like this anywhere near me. I have become more thankful for where I live as I have read comments from people all over the world who don't necessarily have the rocks, clean water, or scenery that I enjoy here. I do also buy rocks because I like to tumble some stuff that I could never collect on my own. Both are fun to tumble.

Yooperlites glow a very faint reddish color under 355nm. I guess the 355 is for some Calcites. I have one rock that will glow bright yellow/green under 355nm but doesn’t react to 365nm. Looks like milky quartz under regular light.

The translucent green agate at 8:58 - have you ever used the flashlight mode on your phone to backlight translucent rocks? There's something about the LED they put in phones that does a particularly good job of showing off translucent rocks. With some research and some trial-and-error, I found a specific LED part number that recreated the great backlighting effect, and used them to build a display box with a grid of these LEDs, each in it's own shallow depression. When the display box is fully populated with translucent rocks (carnelians are our local find), it makes a pretty cool looking display.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 23 күн бұрын
Yes, I have used my phone's light to backlight them. I thought the LED flashlight I used in the video worked about the same, at least I never noticed a difference. Your display box must look incredible all lit up. That's a big project, but I'll bet it was well worth the effort.

That looks like a ton of fun, what a wonderful day! Can’t wait to get out in my neck of the woods! Question, have you had mixed results with different brands of ‘stage 4’ polish or are they more or less the same? I’m trying to figure out the problem on my last batch.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 28 күн бұрын
I have not had problems with my polish, but I have always used the same stuff. There is definitely a difference. I find that a lot of what is being sold as polish is 1200 aluminum oxide. I consider that to be a pre-polish. I would highly recommend that you go to either the Rock Shed or Kingsley North for your polish. The Rock Shed sells theirs as "8000 grit aluminum oxide polish". Kingsley North calls it "micro alumina". Here's a video on why your rocks might not be getting polished: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKazpaOqp5ySjJY

In 1960 I went agate hunting with my father on Lake Superior. It would seem like all the "good" rocks would have been picked up by rock hounds over the past 60 years (and before). Do these beaches get recycled and replenished by local storms?
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 27 күн бұрын
I was born in 1968, so I can't really compare to when you went there. There are plenty of good rocks but I'm not sure how the amount of agates compares. There are rocks still coming out of the bedrock but probably not a the rate that they're being collected.
