I am presuming the 2020 570s has the updated flywheel. Thanks for the video!

I would hope so. I am not sure though.

Great video thanks, this is a well documented and annoying issue, but once the flywheel is changed it wont happen again. Happens on all models apart from 570GT (new wheel) 720s and 765LT. Its not extremely common but it happends. Its a totally newly designed wheel which should last the life of the car. Fair play to mclaren for completely changing the part manufacturer to LUK. This issue should be a thing of the past now.

Why reinvent the flywheel? haha Fair play would be a recall, or at least a replacement of the starters for not having a failing spring contained within the flywheel.

I just did this on a 570GT, BTW. I guess early models also had the old flywheel.

vehicle just showed up on the hook yesterday, no start and burning smell, any easy access points to verify the fault before I send the customer the bad news? love the video man super detailed, from one tech to another I appreciate ya!

You need to put a wrench on the flywheel and turn it in the direction of engine running rotation. If it doesn't move, turn it the other way and if it then spins freely in both directions, the metal spring piece will have dropped out of place. If it bounced around on a tow truck, it's possible to dislodge the piece before hand. The space is very tiny so remove the starter see if the solenoid works when body is grounded and power is applied to s terminal. Look at the teeth of the flywheel and spin to look for any damaged teeth. I don't know if you can get a magnet in there but the spring pieces will be magnetic.

@@HollywoodMechanic Amazing thank you for the insight! I think im putting it on the hoist tomorrow, my service advisor checked it yesterday and it wouldn't crank
@HollywoodMechanic2 жыл бұрын
@@camwilson8305 If the starter has burnt, it won't crank anymore anyway. Just try to remember to only turn in in the running engine direction. If you can't, and then you rotate the other way and then you can, you'll know it's the flywheel.

@@HollywoodMechanic what do you recommend i quote labour wise? Can’t find anything online

@@HollywoodMechanic pulled the starter, the shaft was jammed against the flywheel, turned it back and voila! spins freely. couldn't find any piece of springs, but I hear rattling when I rotate the engine

did you have to program the flywheel to the car ??

You're supposed to calibrate misfire monitor. I did not the first one I installed and several viewers contacted me after seeing the video and also did not. I know the owner of the first one, he's not had any issues with it since and he's put 17k miles since the replacement.
