I was a mechanic of no significance a long long time ago. I worked w a master mechanic who once listened to a 1965 mbz at idle that leaned out on acceleration and that no dealer could fix. He took the carbs off and then took me into a darkened room and had me hold a flashlight while he stretched the rubber gasket between intake and carb assembly. Sure enough a hundred little holes. He made another gasket and car ran fine. This Hollywood guy is same caliber. Same attitude that values experience…

This is a very old problem first encountered with Mercedes turbo diesels in the 1960s, the solution was a pop valve where high vacuum over a certain bar would drain down vacuum, as well as dual diaphragm brake booster that was barely adequate.

@ I am committed to building this as I just placed the order for ports from a handful of locations. For grins, I took a look at the McLaren Service Manual and see they state a bleed is “NOT” needed with piston or bladder accumulators? Your comments in the video make sense - thoughts on why they would take that position? Care Point: For metal bellow type accumulators, if you follow the procedure below to replace the accumulator(s) a suspension bleed is not necessary. Install Metal bellows type accumulator - Front Care Point: Always replace the actuator bolts. Refer to the Spare Parts Catalogue (SPC) for Care Point: For membrane type accumulators, a suspension bleed is not necessary unless the actuator is replaced.

I’m curious what your thoughts are on a Certified Pre Owned FF? Would that not cover the issues these cars have?
@HollywoodMechanic29 күн бұрын
Shocks are not covered. PTU would just replace with another one that will fail again. Gearbox depends on what part fails. The Power 15 warranty says "generally leaks and gaskets are not covered" but some dealers will do the valve cover gaskets, etc. The car would have to have less than 50k miles and less than 15 years old. I just had a GTC Lusso brought in on it's last year of Power 15 (it's at 45k miles, so will not be eligible for next year) and it had radiator leaking, oil pump leaking, PTU still original, valve cover leaking, intake manifold leaking, power steering line leaking. So I sent it to Ferrari Los Angeles and we'll see what they cover. They did tell me the coolant is a 12 year service item!!! WOW which is why the radiator and thermostat were leaking: covered in crusty bad coolant.

@ thank you for the comprehensive reply! It seems like with these cars, you’ve got to “pay to play”. I really like the idea of the FF over a Turbo S but the maintenance factor feels like the grim reaper lurking around the corner. The sound of the v12 and usable rear seats though.. tough decision
@HollywoodMechanic28 күн бұрын
@stevec754 don't forget the Turbo S has A PDK which also, porsche does not sell internal parts for and has a notorious shift shaft sensor failure that porsche requires you purchase a new gearbox to resolve. Pay to play is all high performance cars to some extent. Of course, 6 cylinder vs 12 cylinder maintenance will always be less on the fewer cylinders. It's more a question of how you want to be seen when you pull up? The v12 is just in a class of its own

Finding this channel is a godsend…. I was getting dangerously close to pulling the trigger on a Lusso T but I don’t think I’m ready for the maintenance requirements. I had a 2012 BMW 650i with the n63 engine and the constant issues, downtime, and crazy parts prices drove me nuts… I knew my mechanic far too well lol… my Porsche mechanic on the other hand never remembers my name… I’ll take that as a sign 😂

@@fishhead90 I just parked my x5 n63 for the last time. Got 145k miles before valve stem seals got too bad. I don't feel like investing a week of my labor to fixing it. So we are 2wd manual converting it with something more reliable 😊

Every one. Just a matter of how long. If driven in stop and go often, it happens faster. Los Angeles client brought one in at 5000 miles with the failure. If driven mostly highway miles, I've seen as many as 30000 before the failure. But it's a design error that must be remedied.

How faulty are the F12 and the 812 from your experience as a mechanic?
@HollywoodMechanicАй бұрын
@@G6_SA 812 is kinda new, so faults are not common yet but it's the same basic layout for the engine and gearbox. The F12 I see the same issues. So water/oil pump, radiator design, timing solenoids under the valve cover, transmission over haul and weep hole requirements, shocks leaking (especially if lowered).
