They are fake! A long, long time ago, my dad gave me an Empire speaker that a friend had passed on to him. The speaker had something that looked like a horn tweeter, but my dad said, "that's not a tweeter. It's just an ornament." Years later, I broke the speaker open, out of curiosity. The cabinet was made out of thin plywood. The "tweeter" was just a hole with some plastic pieces that looked like a horn. The "woofer" was a full-range speaker, probably about 6" much like what one would find in a radio/cassette player. That Empire speaker was made sometime in the late 1970s, just for reference.

This scam is still going on. They're all over the world! I just saw a video from England but the name of the system is different. The main company is based in the United States. I also saw another video about the scam from a Mexican man. The reason I looked into it is that a friend of mine bought two of them today! In the late 90's I bought some white van speakers, luckily I had already known about the scam and the least amount they would sell them for. I messed with the "salesmen" for about 45 minutes (It was during the day in a crowded shopping center parking lot, so I wasn't to worried about getting my ass beat for fucking with those guys) I used them as surround sound speakers for a couple of years, they replaced a pair of Optimus or Realistic (Radio Shack brand) that I had been using. They worked well for what I used them for and what they cost. I eventually upgraded them with a pair of Infinity SM-65. I think my cousin still uses those White Van speakers for surround sound nearly 20 years later.

I paid 500 for a "3d 4k" projector with a 72 inch screen and the speaker set up. I checked the "website" first as well as the "ebay listings". I set it all up and it worked fine, the picture almost even looked hi def but not quite and definitely not what it advertised. Speakers even sounded alright. But I figured out it was a scam and sold it on craigslist for 450. I didn't have the heart to try and flip it for profit. I felt sick just selling it for 450. I don't know how these heartless bastards do this shit routinely. But I got my money back for the most part aside from a reality check on how elaborate scams can really be. I had no idea people went to these lengths. But im with you, if I see these guys again its going down. So everyone knows. The scam brands I got was a Hammond projector and Harper Hughs speakers.

I used to work for a warehouse too, and I still got scammed. If a "boss" buys extra goods that are not needed for whatever reason, they always send it back to the warehouse for a refund. They never, tell people to "just get rid of it." That would be foolish. I feel like such and idiot. A complete fool. They were good scammers too. They showed me the contents, the gave me the bill of sale. They even showed me a number to call if something malfunctioned. All of this was theatrics to make me feel comfortable about the purchase. Man do I feel dumb. I paid 250$ for speakers listed at 3000. They even told me they were bluetooth wireless. There was nothing wireless about them accept the fact the sub woofer was missing wires that it needed. That was a 250$ lesson. Man, I feel low.

I'm guessing the box had little to no official symbols denoting trademarks, copyrights, or government regulations met. Or descriptive sentences in proper English. This is where it helps to be patient, educated and observant. Knowing brand names shouldn't be necessary. Even then, someone could be selling you a stripped system with bricks in it. Buy stuff from a store or online because you can get your money back.
@ElectronicsForFun9 жыл бұрын
hey man I wouldn't throw that away it still has potential to be good just take the rocks off the speakers and take the subwoofer out of the excuse for a cabinet and make your own sound system because those speakers look good and I don't mean nice I mean they look like decent quality if hooked up to a proper amp even though the tweeters are fake, but the midrange look good.

This is an old scam that goes back to at least the late 80's. I was approached then in New York, but didn't part with any money. I was with some friends waiting for a concert that night, so they had multiple people to convince, and there were some logistics problems with us getting a bunch of large speakers, so nobody took the bait. I thought it was a one-off event, and was surprised to hear years later that it was going on all over the country.

If someone is selling a brand like Bowers&Wilkins (B&W), Definitive Technology, Martin Logan, Klipsch, Sonos, Sony, Pioneer or Pioneer Elite, or Denon..? And it's at a dirt cheap price, then yeah take a look and test em out. Efore you buy. Those are some of the best brands you can find for home theater systems. Some of them I'm sure people never heard of just like the ones those white van guys try to sell. The difference is, these brands are the real deal. Bowers, Definitive, Martin Logan etc.. Premier Home Theater brands.

They look different on the box to the actual speakers, they have silver shiny dustcaps on the box, but not on the speakers. And if I've never heard of an electronic brand, I will always research it first. If these guys ever try this on you, just don't buy them. They're not actually that terrible sounding (but hilariously unsafe and flimsy) but people just get overcharged for them. I found a set in a bin once. They were the rolkolsen r-10, still in the box with protective film on. For free, they're not too bad (after converting it to a passive speaker of course lol) I actually kinda liked the sub with the passive radiators, but they are no where near worth what they're sold for.

10:55 "Don't by anything if you've never heard of the brand." I disagree with this statement. That's not the moral of the story. Some of the best audio brands in the world (MartinLogan, Bowers & Wilkins, Sonusfaber, Definitive Technology, Sonance, McIntosh, Marantz) are brands that most people haven't heard of because they aren't sold in regular stores, you have to go to the high end dealers to get them. The moral is don't buy anything out of some guy who approaches you in a parking lot and is selling out of their vehicle.
