By popular demand, we decided to publish some bonus onboard footage of the McLaren F1's BMW S70/2 doing what it does best, making pure, awesome V12 noises.
Here's the main F1 video: • McLaren F1 - BTS with ...
In its day, the McLaren F1 seized headlines for its record-breaking top speed, but in reality, that was never one of the car’s performance objectives and it is actually one of the least interesting features of the car. In this video, Derek Tam-Scott discusses many of the more interesting parts of the F1.
Such as the fact that the car’s designer, Gordon Murray, tried to be allowed to sit in the car while it was crash tested. Or the fact that it’s almost exactly the same size as a Porsche Boxster. And 10 inches shorter than a modern 911, 2.5 feet shorter than an XJ220, and 700 pounds lighter than either. Or the fact that the production manager for the car once spent an entire weekend going to grocery stores looking for the perfect eggplant (well, aubergine) to match its color at the request of the customer who had ordered a car. And much more.
The car is of course one of the most revered and desired cars of all time. Derek asks (and answers) whether it’s overhyped or whether the car truly does deserve the attention it receives. He also explores the origins of the car, starting with Gordon Murray’s Formula 1 cars at Brabham and McLaren, and on through the development of the F1, including why the car is powered by a BMW Motorsport engine. In the course of this discussion, he reveals the almost innumerable reasons why the car is so unlike any other car before or since, a key part of its enduring legacy.
BTS (behind the scenes) with DTS:
Derek Tam-Scott’s spirit age is excess of 75 years old, and nowhere is that clearer than his taste in cars. At age 16, he went to work at one of the United States' foremost vintage car dealers, which cemented his elderly taste. Now with a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving, and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced many of the world’s most iconic cars. And even liked some of them.
Most of the car enthusiasts of Derek’s generation (and well, let’s be honest, even a generation or two before him) don’t have much experience with the magic of vintage cars prior to the 1980s, and therefore lack the knowledge and exposure to get genuinely excited about them. The goal of BTS is to give an insider’s perspective on why these cars particularly are great...or at least interesting and noteworthy. Derek brings his encyclopedic knowledge and broad experience together to contextualize these cars to give the audience understanding of both why it matters, and what it’s actually like to experience the cars.

Long back, Henry Catchpole (then of Evo, now Carfection), used the best equipment he had to get the sound of the F1 with the sports exhaust in the F1 vs P1 video, down to the engine breathing noises. With the sports exhaust, the intake sound is deeper and even more organic. That sound is the most glorious sound I've ever heard from any road car and the best captured sound of a Mclaren F1, still makes you ecstatic. I wonder what the T50 will sound like now that Gordon is even more capable with today's knowledge and tech.

The induction sound on this engine is just insane. That was what Gordon Murray was going for after all. A proper manual gearbox, very low weight, excellent driving position and amazing sound from the engine not these modern idiotic exhaust systems. If only we can get all this in an affordable package. Sadly with modern emissions and noise regulations this will never be possible.

Mclaren F1 will always be the greatest supercar for me, and beauty is subjective but for me it’s the most beautiful supercar. I love supercars from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Porsche, Pagani, but the Mclaren F1 will always number 1 for me. That v-12 sound is so addicting.

Finally someone who actually gave the car a chance and not let it collect dust OR just took it for a stroll on the street without pushing it.

I didn't know this car didn't have power steering.... The sound is pure beast mode. I still have the Pentehouse Issue when they did a full article on this car when it fist "came" out lol great video.

2:03 sounds just like project cars. Fucking awesome. Thanks for this video. No one goes out and enjoys these masterpieces of driver joy. So you never know if the game is accurate. But this is the first video ive seen of someone that can make the car make these sounds like i do when i play the simulator.
