McLear RingPay - Smart Payment Ring Review

I received this RingPay Smart Payment Ring from McLear as a gift. I was so impressed by it that I decided to make a video review to share it with you all (I wasn't asked to) and demo it for you so you can see it in action. I didn't actually know smart rings existed until I was sent this so you can bet I was amazed.
Technology is just so impressive, who would have thought a simple fist bump will result in a complete contactless payment? It's hygienic and convenient and most definitely a gift I appreciate. You can also deactivate it in a second and reactivate just as fast. The RingPay app offers other benefits too. Watch the video to learn more.

I have recently brought the ring and love it, I tend to take the ring off and hold just above the payment device when making contactless payments as I never have a problem with angle or anything else and in a matter of seconds the transaction is complete, with auto top up it is just like a debit card, though I haven't yet spent enough to need a top up. Great device

@@XALIRATE Personal preference, I find it easy than having to get the angle right, I found some devices take longer with a fist bump, so holding it in front of the device makes for an instant purchase, that's all

Just bought ring ,I love it but found out sometimes I have to place fist different spots on terminal because it doesn't pick up signal straight away which was frustrating .

Do you have to top up or can it just automatically charge the linked bank account?

You need to top-up. The RingPay app needs to have a balance but you can choose to set up an automatic top up of x amount whenever your balance falls below x amount 👌🏽 or you can choose to top up manually. I hope that helps 🙂

Yep because the ring is linked to your debit/credit card, not your phone 🙂 You only need your phone to top up using the RingPay app.

I’ve not used any other smart rings other than the McLear one so I can’t comment on that. However, I can say that the McLear one is worth it for the convenience. It’s definitely not impractical.

I don’t believe so. The ring acts as a debit card, in the form of a ring. I’ve never gone out without my smartphone (does anyone ever really do that?) but it should work 🙂

You can use a Mastercard or Visa card 😄

@@XALIRATE yay thanks for answering! I was deciding whether to go for the Mclear or the K Ring which was being advertised as VISA vs Mastercard respectively. But I don't like the K on the outside of the K Ring, and prefer the cleaner Mclear look. So long story short now that I know I can use Mastercard to top up the funds on the Mclear I'll go for that one! 😁 👍

Ah right, I see. My guess is that they’d need to have the device right next to the ring to get the signal, in order to take the money successfully so that most likely wouldn’t work .

@@gbosch618 the payment function of the ring is only activated when you make a fist, otherwise it's in standby and payment cannot be taken. Also they would need to be in very close proximity to your hand for any device to communicate with the ring, if it did happen to be active

It’s a one-off; you just pay for the ring. After that you simply top it up via your bank account / payment card in order to pay with it.

i could be wrong here but if your phones nfc is turned on, then i think it tried to detect it, so it bleeps, because it did the same with my debit card when it was next to my phone.

With a jakcom r4 you can do the same … pair it with a debit credit card and pay and you don’t need to top up anything …. And also you have with the jakcom r4 two nfc modules and another id chip … apart of the ic …. In my point of view … much better …. By far … and by the way, it looks the same is made with ZR ceramics …. And I don’t know about this one …

sounds good. Not having to top-up is an advantage but cos this one has the automatic top-up option it’s not really an issue and is basically effortless. But the Jakcom r4 sounds good 👌🏽

Debit or credit card. I do still use it but not as often as I used to because I have some new rings and this one doesn’t sit nicely with my others cos the style is so different 😆 so I tend not to use it as much but I sometimes use it for local shops when I’m not wearing my fancy rings (so basically for short trips outside). I still think it’s a good product after almost a year 👌🏽

You don’t touch the payment pad. The ring doesn’t even need to touch it. It just needs to be quite close to it and it works fine (similarly to when paying with a contactless card or ur smartphone - it doesn’t need to physically touch the payment pad to work)

Yeah very good on all shop readers,bad on TFL though.Tried about 18 times in the last 2 weeks.Wonder if its due to linking your card/travel payments on TFL as you get charged a max day rate travel?

The price of the ring gives it no chance to become popular. How could they compete with banking cards you get just for free?

As with some products, they’ll go down in price when they become more popular. It’s the convenience of them that will sell them I guess. A bit like smartphones. The high-end cost a lot more but easily compete with the low-end ones that can do similar things. This concept is still fairly new. I think it’ll take some time to pick up for sure.

@@XALIRATE Sorry, but I guess smartphones gold rush is not a good example. Kring is more than 5 years on the market and absolutely no one even knows about it's existence. They need an urgent boost, which only could be made in partnership with some huge corporation like Visa or MasterCard, or maybe some giant bank, and lower ring price is vital, because youngsters is their first aim.

@@XALIRATE On my local market 2 banks offer locally produced ceramic payment rings for about 40 pounds and the price is still insane. If I buy the payment ring, the friends of mine will say I'm an idiot, not an early adopter. You can also buy Oyster card-like transport ring in a few cities for 20-30 pounds. Surprisingly, transport rings are not popular too. Delivery guys, who need such rings, will never pay 20 pounds for it.

Yeah, they’re not promoted much cos even I had no idea they exist until I was contacted! 😆 Not sure if they’ll ever kick off but I can definitely say the ring has been super convenient for me especially during times like now where masks have to be worn and so Face ID doesn’t work.

Bank cards are on the way out, digital and contactless device payments are what the majority of people use now and with cashier-less walk and go gates beginning to spring up (think Amazon Go/Fresh) everywhere and are set to become the retail standard with 5 years or so, cards are becoming as outdated as physical money (which is not regularly used by anyone based on evidence). The ring is very cheap at only 80+ GBP.

The point is that the ring is quick access so can be more convenient especially when your phone is in your bag. And it’s a bonus for anyone that likes wearing rings too 😅
