Tip: Attach the chainring to the inside of the crankset, making it central to the cassette and a perfect chain alignment. Use the washers on the bottom bracket to guide you, if the alignment is too near the inside of cassette, towards the frame, if needed. Very important.

Should note, you don’t have replace the front crank set if you are short on funds. You can just remove all the chain rings and attach 1x narrow wide. It’s how I’ve done a 1-by conversion when I couldn’t afford it. You can save a lot of money this way since you don’t need new cranks set and tools for the crank set.

Some one mentioned you put the narrow wide chain ring on the outside position on the crank. You really want to see whats really going on with alignment. Take a look from the back of the bike. looking across the chain, to see the offset alignment between the front and rear. Now you can see, on the 1x conversion putting the 1x ring on the center position is the correct way.

@Ai He is referring to mounting the chain ring on the inside of the spider. In most cases that will give you a better chain line. It can really go either way but as stated usually best inside or where the middle ring was on a 3x

Also there was no mention of using any spacers with the bottom bracket. On my 3x7 to 1x10 conversion, I learned that I had to use 1 spacer on the drivetrain side. Spacers usually come with the bottom bracket.

I was thinking the same thing as I watched this. Also, there are quite a few 1x conversion chainrings that have a offset flange or built-in spacer to move the chainring a little bit more toward the middle.

Three points: Normally with this kind of crank you would install a single chainring on the INSIDE (toward bottom bracket) so that you have the proper chainline. This will be especially important if you put on wide range cassette. Second, no need for that much grease when installing the BB, it just attracts dirt. The spinning of the crank takes place due to the sealed bearings. Third, a two piece bottom bracket usually comes with a plastic inner sleeve that runs between the two halves and serves to minimize contamination.

If you do this 1X conversion and convert to a more modern cassette and derailleur, I have found it is best to put the chainring on the inside of the cranks and remove any bottom bracket spacers from the drive side. Otherwise, your chain is too far out of line with the largest gears and causes issues (noisy pedaling, chain drops down gears if pedal backwards, etc.)

@egoat5082 4 жыл бұрын
For a road or gravel bike, yes I can understand where you're coming from. But with mtb, a front derailleur is just another heavy part to break on jumps and rocky descents. And also it's alot heavier with all those chainrings. Having more range in the back like a 9-12 speed 11-48t cassette is a better option as it allows for some good range aswell as weight reduction and less complexity on the bike.

One tip. I usually recommend people buy the smallest tooth count front chainring they can find if they are not upgrading the rear cassette at the same time (usually 30t is the smallest). Most 3x rear cassettes are not geared very low. A small front chainring provides a little more lower range.

Jay Ay I did change the wheelset, I wanted a wider rim. And I bought a whole new drivetrain, it came as a pull from someone else’s upgrade. You had better check your info... the 2020 Marlin 5 comes with a cassette, I think, but haven’t checked all bikes, that Trek has pretty much dropped the freewheel setup all together. I really don’t care about what you think “I wasted” MY money on, at the time I couldn’t afford “more” bike, so I upgraded this one and now have what “I” want. Spend YOUR money the way YOU want, and don’t try to tell others how to spend THEIR money.

Jay Ay So I have old Diamondback Sorrento that came with a 3x7 like your Marlin 5 and I replaced the stock Shimano 14-28 freewheel with the $34 Shimano 14-34, then replaced the heavy triple crank with a cheap CDH 32t single crank from Amazon. The chain line is spot in line with the middle of the freewheel and now the bike is nearly 2 pounds lighter and shifts perfectly. It may not be for everyone but it will handle any blue trail in my area.

MCMTB because I was able to upgrade it incrementally over a year, if I would have waited for more money, it would have been close to that time until I could have bought a bike. What I object to the most is you trying to tell somebody how and on what they should spend their money on. You may have a budget that allows you to buy any bike you want, but I’m on an extremely limited budget right now and I’ll not explain my choice to you. I got most of the parts as pulls from others people upgrades, so they didn’t cost me retail. If you were to buy the bike and immediately start dumping money on a bunch of upgrades, then yeah, you should have just bought a better bike. If you do it over time and with a limited budget and are willing to buy lightly used parts, it might be an option to look at. You are in no position to dictate to anyone what they buy or what they spend their money on. If you want to pay my bills and buy the stuff I use, dictate away. Otherwise shut up.

About 3 years ago i have also changed my MTB 3x9 to 1x9. First just chinese crankset the same like you with Deore M592 and 40t casette. I bought Chinese Goldix crankset but arm broken after few thousands km, it was just too light, thin alloy. Then i have read good reviews about IXF chinese crankset and bought it, using it till now, IXF looks thick and strong so it seems to be fine. Another step I did recently, changed derailleur to Ltwoo T5 with clutch for 11-42t casette, using it 2 months and it works fine, clutch make chain really quiet. I just prefer much more 1x drivetrain. Maybe if i lived in area with big mountains then I would like to have 2x or 3x for really light gear for climbing but in place where i live close to the center of Poland there are just small hills and i feel fine even with casette 11-40t and 32t front, used for some time 11-36t and it was also fine, just need to stand up and push harder on steeper climbs but anyway simplicity of 1x is much better than downside with climbing gears.

Great video and well done for instructional purposes. As for going to 1x8 depending on the type of trails you ride would dictate if its a good or bad idea. People riding a lot of ups and downs would be better off going 2x8 cause the 1x8 really reduces your gear range options. The 1x set ups that are on new bikes have a much larger rear cassette providing a much wider range to handle hill climbing as well as long flats to go fast. I've personally done a 1x9 - 1x10 and currently ride 1-11 and each time I upgraded it helped improve the quality of my riding.
