I'm sure you realized you could save the error box because of the lining, the extra incorrect slots for the top will be covered by the lining. Of course it will be a little tedious accurately re-cutting the slots to match the others. I only mentioned it because most of us don't have your wood resources and would not want to waste any. Love your videos!!!
@kaveh4052 Жыл бұрын
for me the error comes from cutting the box at 26:14 when it cuts the box upside down! the most worked part remains at the bottom and the less beautiful part above!! am i wrong?

Matt, thank you so much for sharing your creative process with us! It's so inspiring to see the ideas in your head come to life in your shop. Your passion for woodworking is evident in every project you undertake, and it's clear that you put a lot of thought and care into each piece. I love the idea of these boxes with removable lids and liners - they're such a unique and thoughtful gift idea. Keep up the amazing work, and I can't wait to see what you come up with next!

Greetings from the BIG SKY. Making boxes is really fun. I made an oak boc for under my living room coffee table with 2 ten penny nails, a couple magnets (I used quarter sized magnets,too strong) and the oak box. The box appears suddenly with its contents. 1/4 inch box joints, 3/8 inch box. A piece of wood for a ledge.

The reason the small one is more pleasing to you is it is closer the the "box golden ratio" of 1.618, example if you determine your box length will be 6", then you divide the length by 1.618 and you get 3.7" and then you take the width and divide that by 1.618 and you get 2.3" tall..... beautiful boxes though!!!

I read some place in one of the woodworking books and there's actually a formula for furniture. Heights length width so it is pleasing to look at. I don't know if it would be compatible to downsize on those beautiful boxes. I do agree the shallow one seems to be more pleasing. Yeah I had a nice shop through the years in health conditions. I don't have access to all my tools anymore. I miss going out and tinkering . Thank you. Stay well. Stay safe

Yeah it’s hard for me to believe, but I have a whole stack of very aged wood in my shop. I met a guy who used to work with sawmill people that used to take some lumber as part of his pay. He got cancer and was trying to sell some off so his wife wouldn’t have to deal with it. He had an awesome collection and even had his own shop where he built some awesome furniture. I didn’t have enough money to get much but the little s10 I was driving was practically on the axles when I left. Always wanted to go back but never got to.

Two things Matt.... 1) My son, (now 31,) used to laugh as a kid when Norm Abram brought out all the clamps for a glue up. When I saw six clamps holding the box lining in..... well.... just has to laugh, thinking of him. (Yes, I'm comparing you to Norm!) 2) Did you at anytime give thought to milling and making flooring for your house build? Ofcourse that would give Donovan a lot of ammunition to complain about the planks he would have to install but... it would be fun.

@in2rock275 Жыл бұрын
All of the following is just my opinion as to what's most visually appealing. Height is commensurate with length and width. For anything in the 6" range, I use a height between 2"-2.5". Once you get into the 7" range, you can bump your height up to around 3". 8"-9" long boxes can be 3"-3.5" tall. I also use a "Golden Ratio" number (rounded to 1.618) to determine approximate length and width (for the most part). My 9" long boxes are somewhere around 5"-5.5" wide (9 ÷ 1.618 = 5.56) and 8" wide are 4.5"-5" wide (8 ÷ 1.618 = 4.94). If starting width the width, just multiply by 1.618 (EX: 4.5 x 1.618 = 7.28). I'll mess around with the longer lengths first and determine what looks best to me prior to final cuts. Again, just my opinion and what's most visually appealing to me for the boxes I make. Finally, it all boils done to what looks best to YOU! Research "Golden Ratio" for some interesting reading. Nice video and nice work.

4th box, just carefully match the dado for the top, bottom, or both. Then you can do a captive lid and/or bottom, or slice off the dado on the bottom and finish as you did the first one. No loss of box, and it will have the nicer proportions as well!
