Looks like fun! Have you thought about maybe keeping some lengths of iron pipe on your trailer? You could maybe use that under the log to help keep from tearing up the yard, but you could also use a mallet to drive some into the ground as guides/pivot points to help keep the log on track or help turn its approach angle as you pull it toward the trailer. I've never moved logs like this before but that idea popped into my head as i was watching. Keep up the great work!

Great to see the trailer in action again! Well as you know, I now have an old Wood-Mizer LT40. It has sat for a number of years so bringing it back mechanically first. Just received a bunch of parts to get that old baby working like new. Next for me is some sort of trailer. I am thinking a dump trailer with a rig like yours added. Perhaps the dump feature would aid in the off loading at least. If not, still can use the dump feature for other work. Looking forward to seeing the band mill fired up again!!!

I have the same issue. I hate digging up lawns. I try to do the same with putting branches underneath. Sometimes it works ok. I actually thought about fabricating some sort of small metal frame with wheels to lift the log off the ground so it doesn't drag. That looks like a really good workout, and I know what you mean about the nice weather I'm outside today enjoying it myself.

Plywood helps to save the yard from damage and it’s somewhat slick and can help slide the logs up the hill. It is always difficult to keep the lawn perfect while moving logs that weigh a ton.

Have a 115 acre timber lot and mill myself. Great watching your videos and do envy that trailer for gathering offsite juicy logs. One thing always scares me is wish youd stop using your cant hook/peavey upside down (lifting the handle) trying to roll the logs away from you. You have little power and control that way and if the hook slips the log rolls back at you and can get you. When the hook slips your often compromised already and if the log rolls back you can be pinched or mashed. Much more control and strength when your bearing downward on the handle. Nice haul.

If I already have rough milled boards from the yard that are dry and want to store them for future use should I seal up the end grain? I have some rough Cherry that's been in my shop since August and I feel like I need to hurry up and use it or seal it. Kind of like frozen chicken when you think about it...Only you freeze it. Also, I'm in South Florida and the humidity in my shop sits at about 60% this time of year so not sure if that helps or hurts me? I also just dropped a bit of $$ on some rough milled Maple, white Oak, and Walnut so I want to make sure I store it right :)
@Damienjking6 жыл бұрын
Jesse Moree Humidity helps reduce checking once it gets down closer to shop equilibrium, but not much in the early stages. You def should seal the ends though. Stand it on end when you first get it to allow free water to drain via gravity, then seal the ends with paint , shellac or something else to prevent cellular water from escaping too quickly and causing checks in the lumber. Then carefully sticker it and let it reach equilibrium in your environment. Hope this helps.
@Damienjking6 жыл бұрын
Jesse Moree I just reread your question. My mistake, I thought you were asking about wet lumber or green logs. What I should have said was if the lumber is dry when you buy it there's no need to seal it even in a humid area. Even if it was kiln dried to 6% it would have already taken on moisture between the kiln and the time you bought it in a humid locale. You don't have to go crazy getting wood bone dry or back down to kiln dried levels. Humidity is relative so if I make a project in summer in Florida then ship it to Arizona, I could be in trouble. However if I made it in New York during summer and ship it Florida in the winter it will be fine as long as I've considered wood movement in my design. If the project will live in your local area just let kiln dried lumber acclimate to your shop for a couple weeks and you should be good to start using it. If you plan to take it from a wet shop to a dry (air conditioned house) you should try to transition it from one environment to the other and of course allow for expansion/contraction in your design. For instance, dehumidify the shop for a couple weeks or make the project during a season (like winter) when there is less atmospheric humidity. You def don't need to seal dried lumber though; I never have and have never had checking. Remember checking happens when the log goes from fresh cut wet to less than 12%. Most of the movement and checking happens when it goes too quickly from sopping wet down to the range of say below 20%. That's a huge change in water content (and weight) when you figure as much as 400% of a green log's weight can be water. When dried lumber moves from say 8% back up to 16%, then is dried back down to 10% in the shop, that is MUCH less movement than a green log moving down to equilibrium which again, is when checking is a major concern. Hope this helps.
