Hi everyone, I’m a trauma ICU nurse and a rider. So far this year I’ve taken care of multiple motorcyclists who ended up hurt. We are are talking severe injuries, loss of limb, multiple surgeries and permanent disability. The one thing they all had in common was drugs/alcohol. I’m not judging, drink and do drugs if you must but leave your bike in the garage if you do. The old adage of only doing one stupid thing at a time holds true, as riders we are more likely to be hurt or killed on the road then anyone else, these are statistics but I’ve seen the actual human suffering that’s behind the numbers, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Ride sober ✌️

As a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), I practiced anesthesia for 30 years… I did somewhere in the neighborhood of 24,000 anesthesias, mostly in Level I major trauma centers... I cared for a couple of hundred motorcycle accident victims through those years... In ALL but TWO cases (that’s right TWO) the victims, whether rider or passenger, were impaired...Alcohol, drugs or (too often) BOTH... I stopped doing poker runs 10 years ago ‘cuz all the stops were at bars... No more Bike Nights ‘cuz the potential price is too high... Unfortunately Kevin, you are preaching to the choir in this setting but the message is vital... I am a an evangelist when it comes to sober riding, to the point where I will abandon a group ride as soon as the first beer is ordered... Keep preaching, brother, if it impacts just one viewer, you may save a life or two and one of them could be your own (or mine)...

The commitment also included that I would never ride with any skin exposed. I owe that to myself and to my family. Those commitments still hold today. If fact, I now appreciate non-alcool beer(0.0%). I'm a Brit living in Thailand. I lived in Oregon for a year; loved it. One thing that absolutely floored me was the attitude toward drinking and driving there. I played cricket near Portland (you read that right) and beers after the game were standard. I was told to 'just follow the car in front' if I had one too many! Thai attitude to drink driving is worse. They manage to kill ten times as many people on their roads as in the UK where we have twice the number of cars. Most accidents are drunk men on bikes. UK driving standards are in the top 3 worldwide (if measured by accidents per 1,000 k.m. driven). Strict enforcement has killed off more pubs in the UK than can imagine; 18 per week on average since 2001! Over the same period, drink related reported accidents have halved. That is a price worth paying. In France, a debate rages over removing trees from roadsides in rural France. The reason? Drunk kids die when they hit the trees on the way home! This video is so necessary, and that alone is worrying. I cannot contemplate driving a car after a single beer, let alone riding a bike or multiple beers. It's not about the capacity to drink, it's about ethics. Driving and riding are activities with as high a public responsibility as most of us will undertake in our lives. You can join a band or a start-up business and bail when you realise the 'driver' is a lunatic. Get into or onto a bike with a nut and you can't bail. Even if you survive an accident, what about pedestrians and others on the road? I can't contemplate the pain of being responsible for that.
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 5 жыл бұрын
Many people think driving and riding is a 'right' not a responsibility unfortunately and that breeds a very selfish and not very aware mindset. Pretending to address a 'problem' by politicians is becoming more prevalent too, they basically never address the core issues, instead trying to score brownie points with cheap political stunts. People are so lacking in personal responsibility here that they are having to change intersections and crossings, because people will just walk out into traffic, and car drivers can't be trusted not to run pedestrians with green pedestrian lights over. But it's the same issue, the idea of training people better and not letting those incapable of driving with any skill drive is too difficult, but they are happy to fine people for all kinds of ridiculous things, and create dangerous road rules.

@sgpsimonb
@sgpsimonb 5 жыл бұрын
TheDRIBBLER2: Hazards everywhere for sure. Trees need maintenance and increase the total cost of managing a network of roads. But to argue for their removal to lessen the impact of drink-driving is, IMO, upside down. Public transport, sober friends, or staying at home are the most moral options if one wants to drink. In Bangkok we have a service called "You Drink, We Drive" It is possible because car insurance is solely priced and offered on the vehicle, not the vehicle-driver combination. Leave work intending to have 1 beer, stay too long, call YDWD and some kid in a silly jacket turns up by cab, drives you home and leaves by cab again. It is about 6 times the price of a cab ride, but cabs are cheap in Thailand. I have yet to use the service as I rarely drink, but I look forward to some kid trying to drive my 1962 Series II Land Rover with three gear levers!

@@claytonatkins6058 Don't wear it! You're going to get wet when it rains when on a bike. If you put on that "rain" gear you still end up with wet clothing underneath it. Then your clothing will remain wet underneath and never dry out until you take that rain gear off. When you take off that rain gear now you've got wet gear to pack and deal with later and depending how much later it could be stinking as well as wet. When I ride and get wet in the process I just ride wet. As soon as it stops raining you'll start drying out immediately as you ride. The air flow around you as you ride does a great job of doing that. I always pack clothing in water tight bags just in case I don't dry out before reaching my destination if I don't have any I keep there for that reason. In cold weather I dress in real Wool. You will stay warm in Wool even when it's soaking wet and it dries fast while riding. Modern bike gear is more about fashion than function. Search out pictures of Biker's from the 20's up to WWII. Look at how they all are dressed. They made that Riding Gear themselves or had it made by a Seamstress.

n4zou wool is an amazing fabric. I’ve taken to wearing thin wool socks in summer, especially on the bike, and just bought a thin long sleeve wool shirt to see how that goes this summer. It sucks the sweat off me far better than cotton and doesn’t build up odors like synthetics. Also it can’t melt to skin under friction. Silk should also be good.

Thank you for this video! My husband and I have a garage full of Harleys, which we love dearly, but the reputation and stereotypical lifestyle of a “biker” is cringeworthy. Every summer, my husband and I make many trips to our local parts counter at the Harley dealership, only to find an open bar in the parking lot and a frickin’ party in the apparel department! The reputation Harley riders have because of many (not all) of their actions, have almost made me jump on to another brand. But, we love the bikes too much to stray- just not the stereotypical Harley lifestyle. Also, we have quit going on all of the runs we used look so forward to because of the bad combination of alcohol and ego. It’s so disappointing :-(

Harley is selling a lifestyle. they tell you every chance they get. To fit in, you only need to swap your full-face lid for a dew rag, buy a bike that costs 200% of what it's worth with no traction control (may not even have ABS), and show up every Saturday for the free beer. When I sold my big American cruiser and bought my BMW R1200GS, I now feel awkward if I am not in full gear. I personally like that feeling.

Thank you for posting this Kevin and for all of your work on this channel. I would also add that the insurance companies are twisting the statistics to suit their own prejudices. 47% of motorcycle fatalities involve alcohol. Well, when was the last time you saw a "biker bar" parking lot jam packed with supersport bikes? It pretty much doesn't exist. Yet try to get insurance on one. It's generally 5-10 times that of a cruiser. The people who are trying to be bad asses are mostly riding tavern to tavern in bandanas and tank tops. My insurance agent got all excited and asked if I was buying a Harley when I asked him for a quote on my one bike. Same agent told me that they typically won't even insure a sport bike because "there's just too many fatalities on those things.". Sure, there are. But I also see just as many articles in the paper about a cruiser that piled up, generally at night and most likely coming back from where they tend to hang out. It's infuriating. Oh, and if you think it's frustrating for a sober motorcyclist to watch everything that goes on, try being a boater who just likes to go for a boat ride or go water skiing and has no interest in hanging out at the sandbar getting wasted all day. I love motorcycling, but I was a boater long before that and it is still probably my number one passion. I've watched that entire hobby make a big transformation in the past 10 years or so. It's become all at the booze.

Australia used to encourage designated drivers (with many venues giving free non-alcoholic drinks to the designated drivers), which was a really good policy for younger drivers and really taught this kind of responsibility to those who could learn (some never will), but then they implemented passenger limits and killed the whole idea. Always one step forward, followed by two steps back.

Fran, I agree too. Drinking just causes so many problems in our society. I dont care if someone drinks, but I I dont. It's a personal decision. I have met some pretty down right scary looking bikers recently and yet all of them seem to mention not drinking and riding when I talk to them about just learning to ride. My sons a cop and he says thank goodness for Uber. That has helped so much!

Good for you for talking about the elephant in the room! I am a Canadian who has ridden many long distant miles in the USA. So many times in the middle of the day I have passed little bars located in the middle of nowhere that had 5 or 8 'Hardly Ableson' bikes lined up in front like horses in front of a saloon in a Western movie. I am confident they are not in there drinking milk! How are those dudes getting home? On their bikes of course. Unbelievable. They are Darwin Award candidates in waiting. Keep up the great content.

I've never been to a dealer promotional event so this is the first I am hearing of the practice of offering alcohol at such an event. I have to be honest, I am finding this to be an unbelievable bit of information. This practice sounds so incredibly open to litigation that I am going to have to either see this to believe it or or see a lot of people in the comments saying that they have personally seen it.

I'm going to share it on my favorite motorcycle forum which was just talking about how bad it is that there are bars covered in Harleys with no miles as all they do is ride in and get drunk. People were careful and kind. They aren't hating on Harleys, just the behavior. One said half of something like, if they don't crash it, it's a great source of low mile Harleys. I added the don't crash part. I'll hashtag it out on Twitter too when I get to my computer. Stay safe out there friends!

Thanks for continuing to repeat this message. I enjoy my bike and I also enjoy a beer or glass of wine - but only ever in that sequence in the same day. If I drink the riding in over for the day, end of story. I'm not in the US and the problem where I live is even worse than there unfortunately. I can't tell you how often I ride somewhere and people try to talk me into drinking before riding home. Even my bike mechanic tries to offer me a cold one while I wait for fixes. I wish a lot more popular biking channels would come out and say this is a problem as directly as you have.

As always, spot on Kevin! I know of at least 2 dealerships here in the DFW Metroplex that have free kegs of beer every Saturday. The irresponsibility is mind numbing! Other dealerships have a “3 beer” limit that’s tracked with marks on a wristband. That’s nice, but the rider either cuts it off or gets his wife/GF to go get him more. To compound the stupidity, she gets on the bike with him to leave!?!

I recently passed and if I'm even riding the next day, I won't drink the night before. AMEN . I quit drinking and drugs in '96 . Sure there's been some times a glass of wine or a beer sounded real appealing . But I had to do something , I had to repent and give it all up . Saw too many friends and acquaintances die surrounding drugs and alcohol , suicides car accidents murders work accidents overdoses ect . Come from a small town surrounded by small towns but it doesn't compute why such a high number of fatalities over the decades in this 25 square mile area with one high school . For every one of these that died there's dozens of lifelong addicts and generational addicts also . What gets me as a newer rider is other people and their idiocy . I have a dual sport and most of my riding will be offroad adventure rides , no commuting or freeways but some highway traffic at times . I know that something can go wrong anywhere so I will always wear all my safety gear and not ride tired or fast . Great video and I pray it sinks in to as many minds as possible the stupidity of drinking/smoking weed etc and driving or riding - Take Heed Brothers/Sisters

Very powerful! I think the message is a valid one and we all know the dealerships promoting this type of careless activity are Harley Dealers. I working for a large SOCAL dealership and one of the reasons I left was because of the kind of "lifestyle" they promoted at their events. But I have to say along with riding impaired, lets not forget that this same "lifestyle" promotes the no helmet way of riding. This people that live in states where wearing a helmet is the law get around it by wearing things that pass as helmets but in reality offer no protection at all. People say why do you worry about that, well yes its not me that could be seriously injured or dead from not wearing a real helmet, but it would be me and everyone else that helps pay the medical bills for these idiots that insist on not wearing a helmet or choosing to wear something that they know won't do the job.

I decided early on in my 40 year motorcycle riding life that riding while drinking was a fatal combination. And it was not easy when my buddies insisted "you can have one beer" I notice that having even ONE drink made me me more cocky and prone to more risky riding. To ride a motorcycle you need ALL of your facilities.

Important message. Can't be said enough Kevin. Alluding to your comments about a certain motorcycle manufacturer and alcohol, I had an experience to share on this topic. I was attending an International motorcycle show in northern California where each major manufacturer had a display area to promote the newest year's models. As I entered the area of this company (HD) they had a bar set up serving free shots to guests in their area. This was an event where motorcycles were ridden to the site, as well as car drivers. This is thoughtless marketing to a niche of riders that make up the 47% you mentioned.
