Just live life day to day and grow together. We each like different things and some things we have in common, thats what makes our journey together interesting. Breathe and let each other live life. My husband was going to get a bike and I freaked out, being the mother I am. Advised him it had to be a bike we rode together. I was still very hesitant. Most of it because I wasn't in control. Well, the hubs took his MSF course because it's required here, and then he encouraged me to take it too, just for kicks and our dealer was offering it at $69, a deal that can't be beat. Needless to say, I've been riding for just over a year now. We each have bikes. And now the biggest fights are who gets to buy parts first. Literally, best decision ever.

I had a wife that gave me an ultimatum - "Either me or the motorcycles". I went the very next morning to the Honda dealer and bought a brand new 1995 CBR 900. Then rolled the bike into the middle of the living room. We were divorced within 6 months. For me it wasn't just about riding. Did I need a boss or a wife in my life? Could I live my life under a threat? The answer is obvious. I can't understand why a grown man needs permission from their wife. If you are in that situation... might be time to make a change. Thanks for the excellent content sir.

I rode for many years before starting a family and became a full-time cager. Over the years after the kids were born, my wife noticed me watching as every bike passed us on the road. One day she said, “if you ever come home with another bike, there better be a babysitter on the back, because when you ride I’m going with you.” Eventually I did get back into riding once the kids were grown, but instead of her riding with me, she took the MSF and bought her own bike so we can ride together.

My wife is very supportive of my riding. In fact, she bought me a brand new 2016 Yamaha FJR1300 a few years back. This past August, she took an MSF course and earned her license. So, I bought her a new 2019 Honda CB500F and she loves it. In fact, yesterday after work (we are school teachers), we took advantage of the 53 degree temperature and went for a ride together. What a blast to be experiencing that kind of joy together.

I once thought my wife would have difficulty with it. However, she actually loves it. She was more for the bike than for a hot rod car. And, in many ways I think I’m safer on my bike than I was in my fast car. On my bike, I am hyper aware of traffic and road conditions. In my car, I kept pushing the limits. If you push your limits on a bike, you would be in a more dangerous situation. For some reason, the bike turns me into a safer operator. Does anybody else out there feel the same?
@Hurdl
@Hurdl 3 жыл бұрын
totally!!. on the bike you can see more of your surroundings. There are no A or B-pillars, which could blocking your vision. AND the bike is smaller than a car... even though it is an advantage as well as a disadvantage.
@joej2353
@joej2353 3 жыл бұрын
I feel exactly the same way. I’m a much more aggressive driver than I am a rider. I’m also much calmer on the bike. Because I’m more aware of what’s going on around me, I’m rarely taken off guard by what other drivers do and I can just handle it and move on. My wife doesn’t care for it at all. She’s made peace with it. I never lied to her about it, but it was the first major decision in 36 years done without consultation.
@loveismotorcycle6281
@loveismotorcycle6281 3 жыл бұрын
Having had both fast cars and bikes, I disagree. A sketchy situation in a fast car, even at high speed, is still less likely to kill you than a low speed accident on a bike. You can have a head-on collision at highway speed in a car and survive, but a crash at just over walking speed on a bike is still a dice roll even with safety gear.
@loveismotorcycle6281
@loveismotorcycle6281 3 жыл бұрын
I do agree that being on a bike makes you less likely to make risky decisions, but there is always the SMIDSY (sorry mate I didn't see you) factor that makes riding a bike more of a dice roll.

I’ve ridden for years and my sweet wife has twice shown herself to be a perfect partner. When I was in my 30s I mentioned that I’d seen a cool bike for sale in a front yard. She told me I should go take a look. I did, but then found that I could get a brand new Yamaha 1100 for less than the used one, so we agreed and I got it. Fast forward 30 years. I was nearing retirement and not loving the work I was doing. She came to me one day and said,”You need some joy in your life. Why don’t you go buy the retirement bike now?” Within a few months of research, I had my 2018 Goldwing in my garage. It has been a joy just as she predicted, I’m going to keep them both!

Kevin, one of your best topics! I have been a pilot for 35 years, from a Private pilot to a fully commercial four stripe jet captain. Fortunately my wife was never an issue at least outwardly by the rest of my family were! Then later in life I decided to learn to ride motorcycles, suddenly my wife was totally against it - I got two rider courses, wore full gear, signed up for the spring of 2021 intermediate/advanced class and she seems far more comfortable.....I immensely enjoy riding as I see much like flying a ‘skill sport’ that needs constant training and upkeep. So she is tolerating my new hobby which I take very seriously, just like I did with flying until I sold my last jet on Monday and hung my stripes!

When my hubby informed me that he was offered a job at Harley 4 years ago, I knew a bike was in his near future. I was not thrilled, but he is also an adult. He shared everything he was learning as he took the MSF class, and even a lot of videos from this very channel. The spring after he got his bike, I asked to go on a ride. I had a death grip on him, but we didn't die! He encouraged me to take the MSF course to be a better passenger, and after I passed, one more 2 hour ride on the back of his sportster was enough to convince me that I'd rather ride my own! Now I'm putting more miles on my Sport Glide than he does on his bikes!

A GREAT point today! It is so important to discuss the safety and the rewards of riding with your sig other. My wife knows she always comes first BUT she knos riding clears my head after a tough shif as a police officer and after I had to retire due to serious injuries from the job. She would not ride when our kids were young because if we went down hard we would both not be able to care for them. She still does not like riding. Im headed out this morning for a while while she is working from home. In a nutshell we respect each other enough to work it out. She is not fond of riding because of the danger but knows I have been riding over 50 years so not going o quit unless I have to. Then I will. Be safe my friends.

I am so thankful my wife was ok with me getting a bike. Her father rides so he actually made the way for me. Now my mom was not aware I was getting a bike. I was staying with her the night before my beginner MSF class and I had not told her about the class. It turns out she already figured it out and knew I had been riding because I had a bruise on the inside of my forearm where I had messed up practicing U turns in a parking lot, had gone in the grass some, lost traction and went down. Anyway she seemed to appreciate that I was taking the MSF course (military required) and she’s never voiced concern over it 12 years later. Long story but I agree about the risk. I don’t take unnecessary risk, riding a bike is about the riskiest thing I do. I don’t drink. I don’t speed (much) and I wear protective gear. I am the odd ball wearing a jacket with pads, FF helmet when everybody else is in T-shirts and half helmets. Great video!

Be nice to see some feedback, wife is the keen motorcyclist. Or they both give it a go. Then Kevin will have some more material to work with. I am fortunate because I would tune a girl's motorcycle and let her ride mine ( small 2 strokes ). She became my GF now we are married with a 44 yr old daughter with a bike and a 46 year old son who rides ours when he can.

A few decades ago I was confronted by my then wife who said "You have three kids and a bike. Choose." That was a no win situation for me and honestly I couldn't disagree. I sold the bike but the deal was I could, on occasion, borrow a friend's bike for a quick ride. It worked out. Now I have three bikes and the wife is gone.

My partner has been a health and safety professional for the last 17 years, she accepted, slightly reluctantly, that I needed to ride a scooter in my work life. Initially she was not keen for me to purchase a bike for commuting and riding for pleasure. The commute using public transport was a real pain in the butt, so two months after getting my learners licence she agreed to me buying a bike. I Initially looked at a new MT-03, but she was hesitant at the prospect of spending so much on a new bike and so I purchased a second hand bike from a dealership at half the cost. I involved my partner throughout, she went in to bat on my behalf to get the best deal we could. The compromise, and its not much of a compromise really, was that I would ride in appropriate gear at all times. I purchased helmet, jacket, pants, boots, and gloves along with the motorcycle. She also encourages me to take the time to attend ongoing training, so far twice a year. She has no interest in riding, or being a passenger, and I don't push that. She has commented that she can see how much I love riding and has no intention of stopping me from doing so, she just wants me to stay safe and come home at the end of the day.

My husband did not know how to ride when I met him, so I taught him. A few days after the honeymoon, he told me we were married and that no wife of his was going to ride a motorcycle. I told him to get busy finding her, because a brand new marriage like ours would certainly be easy to dissolve. That was 50 years ago. He rides an older Vulcan, and I ride an Indian.

None of my friends and family want me riding. I've heard about their injuries, friends deaths, one recently, and just respond by saying that it's something I always wanted to try and now love it so much I'm willing to put up with the risks. All I can do is try to be responsible, no drinking and riding, wear gear, watch KZbin instructors like this one, and try to practice in parking lots etc.

The Safety Course idea is great. My wife and I had been riding together for about 7 years when she announce that she wanted to take a rider's course. I agreed and we got her enrolled in a ladies course to which she went with one of her girlfriends. She completed the course and I offered to buy her her own bike, but she didn 't want one as she was fine co-riding with me. I asked her why she took the course and she responded so she would be comfortable if an emergency came up while on the road and she had to ride it for help. Well we still ride together and it has been about 25 years now.

My wife made it clear that she didn't like my bike, or the amount of time I spent working on it, so I gave it to my brother. After about a month of spending all of my free time with her, when she went shopping, when she visited her friends, when she went to the hairdresser, she suddenly piped up one day with "when are you getting a new bike". It only took a month, but she's happy now.

when I got married 32 years ago I already had a Motorcycle. Wife said she had 3 things she would like me to do. 1. always remember our anniversary & her birthday. (i have) 2. I can't have a girl friend ( don't want one) 3. Don't go to strip clubs . (well that cost money I could spend on my Motorcycles) Plus that shows a disrespect to your wife. . Still married and I have 4 motorcycles right now. She never said a bad word about me buying bikes so I think I can follow those 3 things she asked for . In my life i have had 8 motorcycles I still have 4 of them. If i buy more she will be fine as long i take her on at least one bike trip a year. Plus my wife knew i would never get rid of my motorcycle. I will quit riding when i can't get it off the kick stand or i need a gps to find my way home from the gas station that is a mile from my house.

My wife grew up with her father riding a Goldwing... I haven't had a bike in over 25 years and forgot all about riding one until.... I was looking to buy a new car for her and gone to dealerships for a new car. Looked at Camaro, trucks and ended up at Honda. Car salesman kept pestering us, one after next... I got fed up and we left car dealership. I told her I used to ride a bike, a Honda and they NEVER even bothered me when I bought my last new bike, a 1982 Honda CB 750 Nighthawk. She then told me about her dad and how she used to look forward to rides when her turn came to ride...2 sisters and a brother in family, one bike. So, I said to her let's go look at a bike, NOT that I want to ride one again after 25 years. 30 minutes later, we were at local Honda dealership, NOBODY even bothered to greet us or pester us desperate for a sale...we had to ask. Well, needless to say, we bought a bike that day. I wanted a sport touring, she wanted a cruiser... VTX1300R is what she settled me on. We're on our 3rd bike, 2nd Goldwing after that VTX. I had no issue with my wife NOT wanting to ride. Actually, she's the one who normally want to go for a ride on my days off.😎👍😁 Just went to Chesapeake yesterday from N.C, a 7am to 5pm ride, just go grab some lunch at L & L Hawaiian BBQ. She know I CAN'T resist that🤤😁

I swear I can't count the number of times it has happened: " My uncle Bubba got his left testicle ripped off in a motorcycle accident".....Well gee thank you for telling me that. I can relate. We were married for 25 years when I told her I’d signed up for MSF BRC. She wasn’t happy but since I had just completed chemotherapy the prior year and in remission, she wasn’t going to make too much of a fuss. When I bought a used BMW K1200LT a few years ago, she decided to try riding pillion with me. (I’d had two other bikes prior). Heated seats and armrests sold her plus we always ATGATT. I bought a new Goldwing earlier this Fall. She insisted on test riding it with me. It met her approval for comfort, so we bought it! I’ve now been riding for 15 years and still married!

Needed a vehicle and decided to go for an Aprilia 900 Shiver. It was never an issue to buy it and to ride it AND also to take not only her, but also my at that time 9 year old son and 10 years old daughter for longer or shorter rides. Actually one of the most enjoyable ride was with my daughter through Europe 2 years ago. I know of colleagues and friends who gave away their ride, because they became father or because their spouses did not want... Feel sorry for them By the way, since I ride a bike my whole driving way changed for the more safe way, not only on motorcycle, but also by car. I interiorised Road strategy (McRider concept -:). The best thing you can do....

Rode a bike through N Vietnam back in 2000 at the age of 24. No training. Barely any safety gear. Nearly died several times, but loved every second of it and swore I'd get it done properly at some point. Fast forward 20 years, kids now late teens, and I figured if not now, when? I knew my Mrs would shut me down as soon as I raised the issue and we'd have a massive row. Given that I didn't know whether I'd actually like it or not, I figured I'd postpone the row until after I'd tried to get my licence, figuring if I didn't like it or just couldn't pass the test (UK test is different to USA) then I'd avoided a row. And it nearly came to that... Had a couple of dodgy days on the bike during training. But I passed and LOVED it. So the row happened. And she said a flat no. Been over a year since I passed and I keep looking longingly at bikes for sale, but haven't been allowed to get one yet. Hopefully after lockdown I might be able to.

My mom was anti-motorcycle and that kept me from getting a bike for years. After she passed away from cancer I decided it was time to finally get a bike. Life is short, you gotta do what makes you happy. Nothing is 100 percent safe, but there's certain things you can do to keep the odds of living in your favor. I like to go read the motorcycle accident stats every now and then. I find it helpful to be able to break down the numbers. I think half of all motorcycle accidents involve alcohol, so by not drinking and riding, you improve your odds greatly. We also know that younger men tend to get in more accidents than people over 30.. That's a combo of ego and testosterone and thinking you're young and invincible. So ride like an old man whenever possible and your odds of staying safe go up even more. . : ) I just turned 50, so riding like an old man is getting easier for me.

I had been without a bike for several years when I met my future wife in summer 2013. I did a Yamaha demo event at Malcolm Smith’s that fall and rode the newly released FZ-09. The following January I randomly told her that I had half a mind to go buy one. “So go buy one” she said. That’s when I knew I had the right girl. We’ve been married 5 years now. Side note; after a few close calls with typically distracted SoCal drivers, I decided I didn’t want her on the back if something ever happened, and started to convert it to a single seater, removing the passenger pegs and adding a seat cowl. She said “To me that says ‘single’”. I said, “To me, that says ‘no passengers’”. She seemed to be OK with that.

I had a similar problem with my mother. Always concerned when I rode and even at 50 yrs old would give me a "lecture" Figured what she didn't know would hurt her since I lived in another state. Kept the secret for years until my wife decided to return to riding. The short story is we went for an easy ride to get her re-acclimated. She ended up dropping the bike on her leg which required a trip to the hospital. At the same time my son who was deployed in Afghanistan tried to call me and I had to tell him there was an accident and I would call him back. Well he got curious and contacted my niece who called my sisterr who called our mother. Well the truth got out and she found out within 15 minutes of the "accident" from halfway around the world. I never heard the end of it and still get lectures .....
