I really enjoy your advice. I am 71 yr old and have 15 yr under my belt. However, since I retired and no longer commute to work on my bike, my mileage has dropped off and I can tell the difference in my skills. So it is even more important that I practice SAFETY. Thats the main reason I enjoy your videos, every one is dedicated to improving skills to keep you alive. I was surprised that you did not mention headlight modulators. In a Swedish study 2 decades old, they found that this modification reduced cycle fatalities 26%. I am now on my 6th bike, much to my wifes dismay, and I have installed modulators and brake flashers on every one immediately. Now that I do not bounce so well, I recently bought a Hit-Air vest. I need all the safety farkles!

I've bought four helmets in the last 12 months! As a matter of preference, I usually wear a half-helmet. I had two identical Skid Lidz that were five years old and getting a little funky (Deep South heat and humidity) so I needed something new. I bought an HJC half-helmet, and it was ok, but bulky. Then I bought a G-Max that I really like and it's much like the Skid Lidz but has a built-in drop down sun visor. Unfortunately, the new bike (Yamaha Eluder) doesn't provide as much facial protection from the windscreen at highway speed so I needed more protection, and I wanted to be able to moto-vlog. So I bought a Bilt Modular. It fits well, but it's a little on the heavy side, especially after adding a GoPro and Sena with accessories; and the brow pad tends to rest on my glasses, putting pressure on the ridge of my nose. Unfortunately, some of these things you only find out after several hours/miles of riding and you can't return them. The last helmet I bought was a Sedici 3/4 with a face shield. It's nice and light (Carbon Fiber), fits well, and is comfortable. It's my go-to for long rides and moto-vlogging. But for close to home, run around town trips, I almost always wear the G-Max half helmet. Even though I've spent the equivalent of one Shoei helmet in the last 12 months, I just can't imaging spending that much on ONE helmet... Not to mention the fact that I don't really like a full-face helmet most of the time.

I purchased a helmet before our 6 day road trip a year or two ago. Although the helmet felt like it fit 4 hrs into the trip I realized it was to small. I spooned the hard liner like mad just to make it tolerable to no avail. When we returned home we both purchased new HJC helmets and have been very happy with the fit and the helmet overall. The lower price is nice also. A poor fitting helmet will make for a miserable ride.

Kevin, may GOD BLESS you always for al that you do. This year on my daily driver, I upgraded the brake rotors, pads, brake lines, and fluid, couldn't be happier. Tires, well I learned, thank GOD over 40 years ago, is buy the best. And for those tires, buy yourself a QUALITY tire pressure gauge, and use it!!. And for folks with incandescent lighting, change to L.E.D. And lastly, as a Racing Rngine Builder for 40 years, upgrade to Synthetic Fluids, even in a 3 hole change like us Harley guys are familiar with. GOD BLESS all watching Kevin's videos, RIDE SAFE RIDE FREE!!

I just wanted to share my experience with proper gear in 1985 I had a car approaching on a side road their brakes failed and they came to a stop 16 feet in front of me I made an attempt to get around them but my crash bar caught the front bumper sending me and the motorcycle over the top of the hood the next thing I remember the bike impacted my head I felt the compression of it (the engine was cracked) the next thing I remember I was sideways on my feet then my feet came out from under me and I slid 55 feet on my right side. I recieved no head trauma or road rash (I had on a Bell full face helmet and proper protective clothing and leather boots

Thanks Kevin. On average rider puts 3-5,000 miles on a bike a year. Tires can rot, I’ve purchased a couple used bikes with old tires that should have been replaced earlier. I point this out, using the fact in negotiations. I also put the bike on a trailer to drive home the point. Tire life is 5 years max, helmet life is 3 years. Down south we ride year round and the get “Gamey” quickly. My Shoei & HJC liners are removable and can be washed.

When Kevin said that "you" was the best upgrade for your motorcycle, for a minute I thought he meant I needed to sell my bike to someone else. :0 There is little doubt that I'm the weakest link in the chain. Paying attention to Kevin's posts and really trying to focus your daily driving both on the bike and in my car to the tips I learn about focussing on defensive driving and the enjoyment of 'driving well', gives me an enjoyment that I fear far too many people getting from A to B miss. When your focus is more about the text message that just 'dinged; or what you need to do when you get to work, while you are manipulating your vehicle to your destination, you are missing so much of the 'joy of handling a machine'. Bike or car or truck all of your work is very helpful and i wish that automakers would focus more on the enjoyment of driving rather than trying to convince us that we should let the machines take over.

Thanks man! On my BMW C1 (the moped with the hood / window-wipers / safetybelts) I put on front white reflectors on the side mirrors. And extra red reflectors on the backside. It has ABS, so that's all okay, but I do not ride so much (69 years old) so practicing is vital for me. Next today, the time has come to practice on a parking lot. It has been in the garage all winter.

Shoie and HJC design have always fit my head shape better as I'm more narrow oval-shaped than round. Arai seems to be aimed at more round heads as there was always to much side space in them for me. I also found a new tech helmet with a built in rear view mirror system that is fantastic, called Revuu. Like auto driving, just look up to see behind while you can still see forward as periferal vision. With regular full face helmets every time you turn your head sideways or around to see what you need to your forward vision is gone and sometimes the that's a problem. With this helmet. Doesn't happen. And you can easily see what's behind on both sides of you by simply turning your head a few degrees left and right looking up while you're forward peripheral vision is still intact. I believe this homemade create the most safe riding environment visually the anybody could have. Love that helmet. Great fit, low noise factor, Light weight and is certified all over the world now. Oh and the other great thing about it is it didn't cost me any more than any of the other popular named brands. I paid less for it than my Shoie for instance and about the same as my HJC.

I wear a summer cap on my head under the helmet except when the weather is cold, then I wear a balaclava, so the helmet always stays fresh. Spring upgrades... Agreed that any bike, except a late model one, needs a tire inspection, but on a vintage bike that has disk brakes, my money would be on new performance brake lines. Then dress the brake pistons, and flush the system. Money well spent and the difference will be night and day. Many bikes lack a fork brace; they are cheap to buy and do tend to add stiffness. Springtime is a great time to take a hard look at the bike and take care of glaring problems, from rusted clutch lines to thrashed sprockets.

I took a training class in Illinois back in March. It was an intensive weekend. Friday evening and all day Sat. and Sunday. I had been training all weekend on a Honda Nighthawk. Late Sunday morning my instructor found my bike was not shifting correctly and put me on a Yamaha. The breaking system was different enough that I was having trouble with it. I had finished the course and was taking the test where you start from stopped position, get the bike up to 15 mph and when you crossed the red cones apply the breaks. (It had been raining) I ended up sliding and fell face first. I was so glad I had a full face helmet on. Needless to say I failed the course. I ended up with a broken hand, a badly bruised leg. I believe it would be a lot worse if I hadn't had that helmet.

Kevin- I added LED bulbs (brighter) to the rear of my 2023 ‘Wing, then added the WigWag to make the brake lights flash side to side during braking. I also added the light bar (from Honda) on top of the trunk with a Kisan Tailblazer (plug and play install) which makes the bike a lot more visible. Also I have retroreflective tape on my helmet and from eBay I found reflective panels in white that go on the flat panels on the back of the saddlebags that are reflective at night (different colors available to match the color of your wing.) I don’t remember what they’re called bit should be easy to find. I’m considering a helmet mounted deceleration-sensitive tail/brake light too. Thanks for your weekly wisdom!!!!

You've toughed the one of the key thing regarding the comfort of the helmet - the ventilation. I've used several different helmets of many, maaany different producers. Only two withstain the ventilation comfort test. One is - of course Shoei!, the other is Shark. It is NOT the number of ventilation windows that matters, but the ventilation circuit obtained. And the ending is the astonishing one! there's nothing mach to the biological interconnect between the rider's brain and the bike that makes better upgrade in safety! The rider is just as safe as knife at hand. It can be used to cut the bread or to kill a man.

If you’re up to date with everything Kevin just covered, I strongly suggest a brake light modulator. I like my “Back off” unit and I’m convinced it gets noticed quicker. For quite a bit more money and some effort to install, I love the peace of mind created by my “Innovv” front and rear video lenses with under seat DVR. If the ignition is on, it’s recording video.

Enjoy getting your videos every week Kevin! This week you were talking about lights, specifically fog lights, and I was wondering what you think about pulsating modules has an add-on? I've heard comments that it takes off drivers that are coming your way. The one I bought is from Kisan and I like it. I did notice one guy in a pickup truck come very near the center line as if to give me a scare. I've decided to run on my low beams unless I'm coming to an intersection where I will flip it up to high beams and engage the pulsating headlight. Also, do you have any input on trailering a small Enduro bike such as a Yamaha tw200? My question is would it be best to tie the front axle down as opposed to going all the way to the handlebars with the straps. I do have a good wheel chock that holds the front wheel in a lock position.

A good full-face helmet is essential ... to me at least. In the last (and only) wreck i had, I left the highway at 95mph in a corner with pea gravel all over it. The front of my full-face helmet (the part going across over your chin) was torn completely off the helmet. There were four very deep gouges across the top and down the right side as if a giant grizzly bear had mauled it, a good quarter inch deep. I am pretty certain that without that helmet I would be dead.

Thanks for you helpful advice. My corners have improved since following your advice. I am an older female that started riding in the early 70's without instructions, just good advice from the old Harley biker down the street. I stopped for years due to children. When I started ridding again the classes were required and great lots of useful info. Buy the way I never go without full gear, you mentioned you use pants when taking extended trip. Do we not need pants for the shorter trips? I do! I have heard some remarks about my gear weather it is my leather for Fall, Spring. or my Revit Summer or Winter. Personally I have no plans to wreck ether. However, I dress like every ride could have a wreck. If even a minor wreck happens, skin damage can be a long painful recovery. I glad you encourage gear, but hope in the future you will talk about the benefits of full gear.

One accessory I couldn't do without, especially on longer rides, is my 'poor man's cruise control' - a plastic tab that fits on the twistgrip for the heel of my hand to rest on, so I don't need to grip the throttle so firmly. It's probably the best £5/$6.5 I've spent.

catfordkid I believe they're called throttle bosses. I have upgraded my grips to include one and I agree with you. When my hand starts to get that tingling nerve feeling I just use the heel of my palm on the throttle boss and that feeling goes away.

I live in the Pittsburgh, PA area and just took a basic rider course a week ago. They are all over the state of Pennsylvania. Plus, Pennsylvania is the only state that offers all their riding programs (BRC, Intermediate and Advanced) for FREE!!! That's right....FREE!!! That will save you thousands....so take advantage, I kmow I am.

I got my license through Evergreen Safety Council and I did my ARC at Pacififc Northwest Motorcycle Safety. Generally good experiences as far as the classes go. I wish there was a Ride Like a Pro class available in western Washington. I got the download, but it would be nice to have an actual class.

A graphic of helmet impact points over many moto accidents shows the highest probability of impact in the side of the chin area. ALWAYS wear a full face helmet. If you can’t, I believe Nolan makes one with a front metal bar to protect your face/chin area.

Thanks Kevin for the video. Also thank you for making me more confused about my own motorcycle purchase. I test rode the 2018 Honda DCT a year ago and thought it was an amazing bike. I then took out the new Indian Roadmaster of which I loved as well and bought. But my mind goes back to the Goldwing every so often and now you bought one. It would be great if you did a video as to what made you buy it. I didn’t think your Harley was that old? Thanks again. Really enjoy watching.

Minimum of one but preferably two mc courses per year for me. No exceptions. Great advice as always, thanks. If I may humbly add one other upgrade to this list, I highly recommend upgrading the stock front springs to a progressive type. Not blingy or fancy but an excellent performance upgrade imho.

Gotta agree about the helmet. They're worth the price. Went shopping for a new one last week, tried on a Shoei first which was a big mistake. It made all the other look like crap. But it was $800 without the visors that I want. So looking at $1k for a helmet. Ugh....but it was so awesome.

My man. You bought one of the best pieces of equipment to start with. You bought a Goldwing. I envy you. I wish I could afford one of those beauties. But I want to tell you this. My 97 Valkyrie was inspired by Goldwing. It has well over 100,000 miles. Still runs like a charm. Good choice of bike. Good choice of helmet good choice of advice for people like me. Ride safe Bro. See you on the highway.

It is a good idea to get a helmet with a Snell or ECE rating. The DOT rating is reported by the company with no testing by an independent agency, so it might be complete fiction. I have the HJC brand after trying on several. Not too loose and not too tight. Armored motorcycle jeans are good for hot weather, and you look more typical in a gas station store and restaurant. You can get a better back protector for $50 at a Cycle Gear store, and try on a bunch of their gloves. I have 3 pairs- waterproof for 50 to 65 degrees, medium weight for 65 to 75 degrees, and vented with armor for above 75 degrees. I also carry waterproof kitchen gloves in a jacket pocket.

I'm thinking that for the serious winter rider, a Chinese air diesel heater would be a must have. Maybe mount it on the front fender and run the duct through the fairing?
