There is a booklet called as Trim & stability booklet...in that for various trims, quantity of ballast water is mentioned, it is different for each ship.

Variation is an angle between magnetic and geographic meridian. It is east or west to indicate direction of magnetic north from true north ...thus it cannot b north or south....it has to be east or west only.
