What a GREAT project -- breathing new life into a unique little loco! Thanks for producing and sharing this video, showing us step-by-step just how to do it. Your patience, dexterity and skill are marvelous. You make it seem SO easy.

BTW, that box cab really sounds great with the ALCO sound project installed.

Great video. Makes me want to try and do one of those myself. Just need to keep in mind that the Stanton drives follow DCC color coding which is nice to know. Thank you for posting another great video.

This is an awesome project. I did a similar thing ,but for DC operation. However i used an MDC/Roundhouse 34' Overton coach floor and used small automotive tire weights placed directly over the Stanton drives. The only thing i haven't figured out is how to install a simple headlight into mine as i don't know how to wire up lighting. Note: as well, I discovered over time that the delrin plastic gears will grind out/strip over time if the load is too heavy, so i went and ordered custom brass gears re-installed in mine back in 2015. Brass gears are a heck of a lot better for heavy loads.

really enjoyed your video. Glad you took the time to film it and share. You should have considered adding an engineer and replacing the bell with a little finer detailed model.

cool project. I have heard that the chassis from the Bachman 70 ton loco is a good substitute for this project

I’ve watched this video a few times because I really like this locomotive and finally got one that I would like to convert to DCC. Do you need to have both trucks powered? Or was that a preference on your part? And thanks for your videos, you explain things so that they are easy to follow. I’m new at this and have used your videos as a guide and find them very helpful.

I really like what you do have learned to use the decoder buddies. I do have a question: is there a specific reason why you don't wire using the colored wire like Soundtraxx or Digitrax?

No real reason.

I have watched a lot of your videos and I would love to send one or two of my engines to you to have decoders put in. Do you install soundtraxx decoder‘s? And would you mind doing them. I didn’t know if you did things for people.

Hi I love your content and the marvelous job you do with these HO scale models. A few months ago my Athearn big boy (not the current iteration but the second generation, the one that has the tsunami one sound) stopped working. The locomotives still rolls but the sound is gone. What I want to do is upgrade my locomotive to tsunami 2 using scale sound speakers. I would also like to upgrade the headlight to a much brighter LED but for me doing all that seems like a monumental task! Especially from someone who has zero experience replacing and upgrading the sound system for a HO scale model or any scale for that matter. Is there a way that you can do a video upgrading the sound system for a second generation Athearn big boy?

I do have a Big Boy video that I haven't published. I put in the Tsunami Big Steam decoder and a Scale Sound Systems speaker. It has a section on replacing the head light.

So I must tell you I have been following your page for almost a year now and have learned some new tricks from you. I do very similar work on my channel. Im interested in doing the same kind of project. As far as the 2 Stanton drives you installed, are they both the powered? I noticed they have a $50 dollar version and a $95 dollar version and want to know which ones you used. Thank you....and keep up the awesome work! Much appreciated.
