Prostate cancer is a tough battle, but it's heartening to know there are options like those provided by Planet Ayurveda. Every bit of information helps.

I'm wondering how many people will no longer be getting this therapy. With surgical centers having to pay $1M - $2M dollars to purchase, and then approx. $150,000 a year in mandatory maintenance on the DaVinci Robotic surgery machines, they are going to put pressure on docs to feed patients into those machines to pay for them. Similar to the instant proliferation of MRI scans in the mid 1990's immediately following the introduction of $1 Million dollar MRI scanners. But if they can spare the urinary and sexual function nerves it can't be a bad thing to just take the damn thing out.

The problem with getting it removed (from research I've done at least so far) is that they have to remove a section of your urethra that was within the prostate and even a small portion on the bottom portion of the prostate. So basically what is happening is they are shortening your length. And on top of that, if the nerves weren't spared by a REALLY good surgeon, you could be impotent for life. Or if they could only spare one side. If they can't spare either side, then it's real bad. But the other urinary problems are consequences of radical prostatectomy as well. I don't know that there is a good answer, but HDR Brachytherapy is one alternative. Once you have radiation however, it's VERY hard to go back and remove the prostate because you have "burned all your bridges" at that point. So the first sign of trouble after radiation is PSA creeping back up and up and up, then you are back to square one with a lot of dead cells and things at that point would require the reversal of your testosterones via oral meds or shots and then you spiral into so many other side-effects. Could there be anything worse than having your testosterone reversed? Probably not.

@@harpoon_bakery162great observation. My husband is getting HIFU and if that wasn’t under our insurance he’d be getting brachytherapy

I look at anything you would take orally as similar to chemo-therapy. Might be great to prevent cancer but is not going to kill cancer cells without killing or damaging all body cells.

@@tommac21I tend to agree. My husband had this 14 years ago, ten years later, he had his protrate removal. Four years later his levels are rising and now off for new scans.

Trick-or Treat needs to turn off the Wikipedia and learn some facts before opening his mouth. The PSA test can save one's life - mine for example. My biopsy indicated a POTENTIAL for Prostate Cancer. I had a Brachytherapy operation, went back to work in three days, and have been CANCER FREE for 10 years now. I am 71 and will outlast Trick-or Treat, because I studied all the options that my slow growth PCa could show and I am a happy camper. The information you alluded to from the "American Medical Association" has been clarified by experts in ALL the factors a PSA test can provide from the overwhelming knowledge that the REAL Prostate Cancer experts understand.

+Harvey Canter Just out of curiosity, what side effects did you experience after the surgery?

@@ZC.Andrew i can help you there. you have to wear a catheter for some of the after effects (very unpleasant) and sexual function is likely disturbed temporarily but not in all cases. Some will have rectum irritation or long-term issue (not a high %). All in all, Harvey Canter made the right decision to get rid of that cancer.

I don’t understand why they cannot just remove a single tumor from the prostate and leave a man intact.
@Eclectic_RNАй бұрын
Often there are actually multiple tumors. Additionally, let's say, that 1,000 prostates are surgically removed, and the tissues at the very edge are now scoped for cancerous cells, sadly, many, sometimes as high as 60/100 will show some cancer has extended and has not been removed. This can be remedied by radiation, but radiation after prostatectomy is less than desirable. Twenty years ago prostatectomy was often the rule, this is not true these days.

9/2014: This is very outmoded. Adverse effects have dropped markedly. SpaceOAR can protect colon/rectum. High-risk and very high-risk (aka T3...) can be a candidate for brachy. The REAL problem is simple: Medicaid pays little for brachy and there are not many radocs that are well versed/experienced in brachy, this is not the case in Canada, where training for prostate brachytherapist surgeons are far more common. This video is 11 years old---do your own reseach.

This procedure has potential nasty side effects . It can cause scaring of the urethra tube and making it difficult to urinate. My father had this procedure and he could only urinate with the help of a catheter. Quality of life is was terrible. I am surprised they still use this procedure. I would not recommend this to most people.
@Eclectic_RNАй бұрын
Brachytherapy has become much, much safer over the past decade. When did your dad have is procedure? All therapy, radiation, surgery has become less risk of adverse effects (but there is still some risk).

not a slow gradual PSA increase over years. it doesn't lie, just like the MRI doesn't lie. If you want to play with fire, ignore the PSA test and let the cancer get outside the Prostate Capsule before you are forced to treat the cancer.
