Yes their a pest and to remove them and to get rid of Aiptasia in a reef tank, you can use a dedicated Aiptasia control product like "Red Sea Aiptasia X", inject them directly with a solution like hydrogen peroxide using a syringe, or introduce peppermint shrimp which prey on Aiptasia; however, be cautious as they might also eat some coral polyps depending on the species.

I like it with the warm light... but with all lights on is better. I refer to Fluval that you tried first and I write as I watch the show. But yes, there are two main modifiers that alters the natural light you see: your photo camera and my monitor colours. But it looks great in the end and it seems fish like it too.

Looks great! Love that new light. A couple of things. That anemone is called an Aptasia or glass anemone and is considered a pest. They have been known to take over tanks. They are easy to get rid of with Kalkwasser paste or Aptasia X. I would get a strawberry or tiger conch for your sand. It will keep it stirred and help reduce the algae in the sand. They have cool proboscis mouths that they hunt around with, and cool little eyes that stick out. You'll love it haha Great stuff! Thanks for the update on this

The aptasia anemone definitely needs to go. It will not only multiply, but will sting and irritate your other corals and fish. The clowns will avoid the areas where those live. After it’s gone, try adding a ritteri anemone. By far a clown’s favorite even though the fish stores will try and sell bubble tips and others instead. @ That’s great that you have someone knowledgeable at the lfs. I only commented that because I have just seen so many clowns in tanks with improper anemones. They always are swimming around like “help me!”😂 I will tell you that once I got my ritteri to stay put (directly under metal halides), the two clowns quickly moved in and layed many clutches of eggs for several years! It was lots of fun!😊

Coming from a guy trying to set up a macro algae tank, from the research Ive done, macro algae prefer fresh water lights over the purple/blue hues that are used for reefs. And if your looking to go into a simple non complicated coral tank with just soft corals, it looks like you can get away with fresh water lighting for them too. Hell those guys seem to thrive on neglect lol. Your Macro tank is looking great so far, cant wait to see how it turns out down the line.

That anemone is called Aiptasia or a Glass Anemone. Some fish will eat them or you can remove them manually (look into proper techniques if going that route). They can be pretty invasive in a reef tank. Not sure how they'd spread in with all the macro algae.

Two things. One, use your skimmer! It's on your tank. Two: Use a small wave maker pump to get more flow in your tank. The oil slick on the surface will be fixed.

Don't take it the wrong way... but it feels like you aren't really committing to the salt water tank. You just did what you do - rely on the plants. Which is fine, nothing wrong with that. But the beauty of a reef tank is the fluorescent corals, etc that glow in that "gloom" under the blue light. I'm not hating, there are many valid ways of doing a salt water tank, I just feel you maybe aren't stepping out of your comfort zone on this.

It's definitely interesting to see you dabble into it - I've never tried it myself and this video shows that there's quite a learning curve even for a professional like you :) I personally also think it'd be a great challenge to "scape" it in your style with the light choices you showed, making it a very unique and personal tank

I'm going to be honest here. This isn't even an intro to a saltwater tank. This is just a freshwater tank with a higher salinity and a different plant. The only thing safer would be a tank with just liverock. The fact that it's been like this for a year tells me that a real saltwater setup likely isn't ever going to happen, which is fine. They are a LOT of work and so much can and will go wrong. Given the demand of this channel and the number of other tanks, I would say the best situation here is to just not bother with saltwater. All it is going to end up doing is taking time away from what you actually enjoy, which is the freshwater tanks. You set your systems up so that you have to do minimal maintenance. An actual saltwater setup will never be that.

Also, the female is the most dominant and largest when dealing with clowns. The mature breeding male will become female if the dominant fish (female) dies. The next most dominant fish will become the breeding male.

When the female dies, the breeding male become the female, and one of the minor males will become the breeding males - she can have quite a harem, but of course if there's room for it they'll split into more breeding groups or couples. The males will compete for the top spot by proving themselves as the best caretaker of the eggs and the fry

One of my fav salt water fish is the Diamond Back Goby. It will eat that algae in the sand, plus it's so cool to watch the sand come out it's gills!

Personally, I have not kept saltwater tanks so I have no opinion on how it *should* be done. However, I think that given it is your main viewing tank that you enjoy during your editing - the lighting - provided it does not kill things - is best set at whatever gives you the greatest viewing pleasure - perfect or not. First rule, do no harm. Second, joy the heck out of your aquariums. Cheers mate :)

I had a nano marine ,pair of clowns ,bubble tip anemone ,couple of hermits and a goby and bullseye pistol shrimp and a brittle star , then tried a few pulse corals and polyps. The best part was seeing what freebies i got in my live rock ,i ended up with two more pistol shrimp hitchhiking and a couple of brittlestars but the craziest thing was a two foot bristleworm i found had made its way into my external filter and actually ate through the sponges making its lair in the external filter. Can't believe it chewed its way through my filter sponges it was one of my favourite tanks but did take a lot more work than my freshwater aquariums ,ive not done another since because i love freshwater planted tanks.

If your shop has any Green Star Polyp corals, get some! They’re super easy to care for and would contrast so well with the red macroalgae! It would almost look like moss or a dwarf hairgrass carpet.

Been wondering about your saltwater tank, looks great after that trim and the new lights! I agree with you that the blue/purple lights looked too artificial for a saltwater tank. Now that you've mastered planted freshwater tanks, you should do a reef tank!

The point is that in sea water natural light is just in the to 5 m or so, after that the red is filtered out of the light turning the light that pebnetrated mainly purple blue.. So those blue purple lights are to simulate the colour of the environment at deeper depts . Funny is also that is the reason why many deep sea fishes are red. The lack of red light makes the apear deep black in the deepsea as all the other cpoolours are absorbed by the skin and there is no red light there.

Your lights were giving me anxiety. XD XD XD. I like the one you landed on! As you now already know, aiptasia anemone. It's cute that you like it! They are one of the ocean's toughest creatures, worth more respect than we give them (because they can be such a nuisance). I don't know your plans for this tank, but if it's experimental (if you don't mind having to completely take it down), some people do grow them intentionally so that they can raise berghia nudibranchs, which are quite fascinating and lovely. One of the things I like most about saltwater tanks is the wide variety of invertebrates you can put in them -- a lot would eat your macro so might be a little limited, but if you want to lean into the aiptasia, berghia are an option. :)

The “anemone” is aptasia. I don’t believe it’s a problem for the fish although if you plan on getting more corals or an actual anemone then it’ll be a problem as they tend to sting anything close and can multiply very quickly. It’s also important to note that if you decide to keep, it’ll spread fast and compete with the nutrients.

I always got a giggle working in fish stores when plant tank folks try a reef tank, or vice versa. The habits and intuitions are completely different. Sure, some of the fundamentals are the same, but there are significant differences in ecology, chemistry, etc. It takes time to build up an eye for the nuance, but it's so rewarding. Keep at it man.

One of the things that always put me off of salt water is the lighting, I don't know if it's because I have sensory processing issues but I always found it really hard to see anything with them. Haha well if you like the Majano anemone, you might like this nano tank from years ago where the owner put a bunch of "pests" like majano anemones and other invasive hitchhikers into a tank (kind of a fight-fire-with-fire idea) as their own display. Aiptasia is definitely a pest and like others have said, if there's one theres more. You could get peppermint shrimp, berghia nudibranchs, or try chemicals. As for the clownfish you got it backwards. The female is the biggest, meanest one. Also you could try getting some cerith snails or a strawberry conch to stir up the sand. I think you need a deeper aand bed though.

That light will cause tons of algae if you don't have good nutrient control. The macro algae you have isn't a fast grower and won't out compete the unwanted algae.

I thought the marine light spectrum is different from that of freshwater plants. Although I'm not a big fan of the gloomy marine light, I wonder if the freshwater plant light could cause growth deficiencies in the coral?

We have aptasia in the tanks at the aquarium I work at. It stings other corals but only 2 tanks in the whole building have live coral so it's not a huge deal.

I didn't get rid. They all died at different times over the course of a year. The fancy ones that is and really put me off. I've got 3 common goldfish in my mini pond in the garden and they are doing amazing.

@@MDFishTanks I stopped keeping Fancys because of this reason. If you decide to give them a try again look into Bristol Shubunkins. They are a single tail variety that are amazingly beautiful, healthy, and do well in larger aquariums. I love mine. Cheers!

When i was still running my salt water tanks i had 2 lights. The blue is great for the first hr of light and the last hour or 2, but a white light as well will make all the difference during the day. Only tanks id run only the blue on were for the fish that lived deepsea, that usually have little to no light

That anemone is called aiptasia, it is a nuisance and that's roughly as big as they get. Clownfish wont host in them and because they're so small they'll survive and thrive on just leftover fish food and will take over in no time.

The way saltwater tanks are traditionally lit has always turned me off saltwater. I thought it was required. Maybe it is for coral? I love the natural light. Looks great! I might try a nano-salt now.

The problem with the little anemone is they get everywhere. They gum up yourfilter etc. And theyre near im possible to completely remove or kill. There is one or two fascinating critters that will eat them. Best way to get rid of them Ive been told.

That's aiptasia or glass anemone. You don't really want that in your tank if you can help it. it can get out of control if you dont treat it. Treat with Red Sea Aiptasia-X. Love the channel. You've inspired me to move from my reef aquarium (after 10 years) to tropical. I'm in the proccess of converting my Red Sea Reefer 350 to a tropical set up.

That looks like aptasia, You should get rid of it before it spreads like wild fire. if it is on the leaf of the macroalgea, i would take of that leaf out. İf it is on the rock, I would use lemon juice. Also I recommend to get a peppermint shrimp as back up.
