As far as I know gon only sacrificed a few decades not his whole life, while that level of nen leaving his body all at once in the final attack and him getting caught in it is what killed him, Killua said that the level gon reached is from a few decades of training, not a life time as far as I know.

Gon was exuding straight DADDY energy in the episodes leading up to that fight with pitou that you saw. Hunter x Hunter is praised for its writing in this arc because of Gon's personality flip in contrast with how the main antagonist of the arc behaves. Not everyone agrees with liking the last arc but I personally loved what Togashi was going for.

Not sure how far you made it into the series but essentially Gon made a conviction that he would be ok never using Nen again (or live at all) if he could gain the power to defeat the one who killed his friend. The way Nen works made it so that all of the potential Gon's life had was converted into raw power for that moment and after the job was done Gon was hanging on to life by a thread. He literally had to be Ret-conned back into the series by Killua's little sister.

(Spoilers) Very late to conversation, I know, but I thought I'd explain a bit(unless someone else already explained or you picked the anime up again XD). Before all that, Gon had been training under a hunter called Kite. Kite, Gon, and Killula (sorry for spelling) after training felt an enemy nearby. Kite was going to investigate himself but Gon and Killula wanted to go along as well. Kite agreed but said they had to be prepared for whatever happens and not regret their decision. In the confrontation to follow, the enemy was found to be overwhelming. Kite sacrifices an arm (I believe) and covers Gon and Killula to allow them to escape. Gon blames himself deep down for this, thinking Kite could have escaped if it was just him. Next time Gon sees Kite, it's not pretty. Kite had lost outright, but the enemy wanted more. They awakened a nen ability to "heal" Kite to fight again, forever. They basically biologically, while keeping him alive, hardwired Kite to attack anyone or anything that gets close. Essentially turning him into a training dummy/puppet. Suffices to say, Gon took this..... "well." If we'll was wanting to outright murder/force the person who did this to fix Kite. It was a long shot but they guessed that Kite could be healed if the nen user that did that wanted to. Eventually, Gon confronts them. Due to circumstances though, Gon confronts them while they are trying to save a non nen user/non combatant. This is quite frustrating because it makes what was in Gon:s eyes a heartless killer psychopath into possibly something better. Leaving him with no person to beat to a pulp to relieve the feelings inside. What's worse is that he was able to convince them to heal Kite but only after waiting a hour or so to heal the kid. After venting in vain, he decides to wait. They then travel to Kite to heal him only to find out, he is dead. Apparently while he was originally still alive aid came too late. The enemy breaks this to them and decides that they have to kill Gon or else he will be a threat later on. This triggers EVERYTHING Gon was holding on to to burst. Now then, neat fact time. Nen users are able to channel their nen energy into cool abilities. This however requires a sacrifice or restriction of some sort to work. Many use previous time spent training, the nen energy itself, or even a bit of their future potential to fuel or make these abilities. Also, the more important the thing that is given is, the more powerful the ability becomes. Got it? Good. Gon has had it. He no longer cares anymore. He can't heal Kite, the enemy that is definitely too strong for him is about to kill him, and he feels terrible. He decides that if this is the "end," then he will bring them down as well. Gon makes a new ability. Ability restriction is the time it takes to kill the enemy which he wasn't going to stall. Ability cost is all his nen, all his potential, and all his life force to the point where he'd be a dead man living. Condemned to a hospital bed while in pain till death. The ability in return would boost his power. It would give him a body that is in peak condition like he trained for every second from birth to adult hood. It would give him a stupid amount of nen energy. Most importantly, it would make him strong enough to defeat them, to kill them without breaking a sweat. He uses this ability and nearly dies. Poor Killula ends up going on an entire story arc just to find a way to heal Gon which normally, would have been impossible. And that's what happened. Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk.

(SPOILER) gon's not dead, he sacrificed all his nen and potential to become op, basically, Kilua said if gon trained INTENSELY for 20 or so years he would be able to be that strong, btw when he is in his adult form he is as strong as a 3rd tier hunter (his dad was a 2nd tier hunter) also getting 3rd tier means destroying a world-class disaster/something that poses a threat to humanity. After he used that form he looked like a raisin and some OP ass girl who I think controls life and death healed him because she/he (I think it's a girl) became friends with kalua and he has to protect her from people who want to use her power (like so he can see)

In the Chimera Ant Arc Gon found someone close To him and his father (A Nen Hunter named Kite) and they got killed (by Neferpitou (The catgirl in the beginning of the video)) and Gon basically threw everything way to just kill Neferpitou since she couldn’t heal Kite since his brain was feed to the Chimera Ant Queen. So Gon makes a Nen Contract to kill Neferpitou and is the reason he became an Adult Gon from it. Also if anyone gets made for spoilers for this comment, the video itself is a spoiler (Also Trekking101 has a top 10 Chimera Ant Arc list he did and this moment (Gon vs Neferpitou) was on the list and goes into more detail)
